This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
I looked at this thing online for about a year before buying it. I could see it had the features I wanted, but wasn't sure if the sound quality would be a significant improvement over my much older zoom GFX5. I plug directly into the board, or into a Tech21 power engine 60, which is basically a powered speaker, and is not designed to provide any tonal qualities. So I am 100 percent dependent on the amp modeling for my sound. I am happy to say that I am completely satisfied by the sound and performance of the G5.
Sound
I play just about everything from 80's new wave to heavy metal to classic rock. I use many different sounds and tones, and I found the G5 to be very accommodating. One thing you should know if you get this unit, you have to use the ZNR (Zoom Noise Reduction) effect at the front of your effects chain for all your patches if they use any Gain at all. Once you do this you will be fine. There's a great video on youtube depicting this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxckzGkjZgI
Features
I give it an A+ for features. But I new that before I bought. Download the manual if you want to see if it has the features you need. The looper is great for quickly recording a rhythm so you can practice a solo. I haven't attempted to use it during a performance yet. It might be a bit tricky to get to for that. Since the looper uses button 1, then you should probably have the patch you want to use assigned to button 1 as well, because I believe it will switch to that patch when you hold the button down to activate the looper. I was concerned that there was no Aux in jack, because I used that frequently on my older processor. However, the usb works as an input/throughput, So I plug my laptop into the G5 so I can play along with songs or jamtrax. You will need your own usb cable, same as ones used on most printers. Speaking of Laptop, the Edit & Share software that comes with it is excelent. It's solid, it is not buggy, and makes programing patches very convenient. The only thing I would alert you to is that when you select the "Online" section, nothing will show up. So not sure what they mean by "Share". I've downloaded some great patches from guitarpatches.com, so that takes care of my sharing needs.
Ease of Use
This is about as intuitive as is gets, I found both the unit itself and the software to be just about as user friendly as it gets. I never like to use the word "Easy", but I was able to get up to spead on this pretty fast. And I am very inexperienced with effects, so I took a couple weeks examining all the preprogrammed patches it came with.
Quality
I think the quality is great. Seems sturdy and well designed.
Value
I'm definitely getting my money's worth out of this thing, especially with the software, this is a great value.
Manufacturer Support
I emailed zoom a question before I bought this thing and they answered my question. I wanted to know if they used the same amp modeling technology in all there pedals. and according to them, they do. It's just a matter of features. So if you want the sound without all the features of the G5, you might be able to get away with one of their less expensive products.
The Wow Factor
It's safe to say I'm pretty blown away by this thing.

The amp modelling is as good, or close to as good, as the Pod 500HD i once owned.I've only had it a month, but so far it's been just what i needed. The build quality is really stout. The 4 way foot pedal is doubly sturdy which i was hoping would be. I noticed it's easier to program and tweak than other multi-fx units i've owned too. And it has a firmware chip which is upgradeable, which can always benefit in the future. Don't forget it only supports 44/16 sample rate (which to me is minor considering how good the unit sounds, not to mention how good so many CDs sound). I'll try to give an update report later after i put it through it's paces, but i'm having mega fun so far. Also, Zzounds had this unit shipped to me within 36 hrs, literally, which i thought was pretty hip.

This pedal is the real deal. For about $300, you get well over 1000 dollars worth of effects. I've run it through a mixer to record and it sounds great, but the fact that you can connect the G5 directly to a PC through its own USB port makes recording that much easier. Make sure to d/l all the free software from the zoom website, especially the edit and share program. It makes editing your patch banks much easier. I could go on and on about how much I love this pedal, especially in conjunction with the FP02M (basically a volume pedal), but at the end of the day, you have to experience it for yourself. I could not be happier that I decided to go with the G5. No buyers remorse whatsoever.

"Zoom G5 Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal"

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
The description in zZounds initial sentence saying it uses a tube for its distortion. This is clearly NOT the case. The tube is only used for the booster function, that's IT. However, I bought one of these to use for home practicing via headphones and to use an effects only rig though the effects loop of my amp. I even tried it as a standalone unit going direct to a PA. No matter how you use this or hook it up, I feel it's an amazing unit. One of the best sounding modellers I have ever owned and very easy to navigate and program. Creating a great sounding patch from scratch can be done in a matter of minutes! The 60 second looper and drum machine functions were the icing on the cake. It's such a fun unit when home alone practicing. I own a POD XT PRO, and tried a POD HD500 and Digitech GSP 1101 to compare this to before buying it. Hands down for tone, price, and programming simplicity this Zoom G5 came out on top.

Sounds great! Easy to use! I originally bought the Line 6 Pod 400 and was a little dissapointed with the headphone jack issue. Buyer beware If you plan on getting one for use with headphones. Read the forums on line 6 website and you will see what I'm talkin about. I returned it to zZounds hassle free. Love these guys! I was thinking about getting the Boss ME-70 and came across the G5 but never heard of zoom so wasn't sure what to think. I went down to the local music store to try them both out, I also tried the Pod 400 jagain ust to make sure I wasn't trippin. I wasn't it still sounded bad thru phones. The zoom sounded the best i was using crapy phones keep in mond) and was easy to use and dial in quickly. I was sold. So glad I got the G5. I know some of you might say who buys multi effect to listen to with phones? Well a lot of people do. For me I need to be able to jam without making any noise. I have a newborn on the way. Tried it thru the PA and it sounded pretty realistic. The pedal is cool too. Not only does it go up and down but left and right so you can assign different effects like delay or whatever. The software was really easy to use too. Only con is no aux input for MP3 player so if you like to learn songs using headphones you will need a small mixer. Pretty solid as well. Other than that its awesome and greatly priced. Way to go zoom. Can't wait to see what's next! Not sure on the customer support from zoom so I gave it a 3 star.

I am honestly a multi effects pedal kinda guy and even though the ZOOM G5 is a multi effects pedal, its stomp box feature is amazing, if you are a stomp box player, it wouldnt hurt to buy one of these babies. It has so many different variety of effects you can mess with and switch up, im pretty sure any sound you want you can produce with the ZOOM G5, im absolutely positive you can, its easy to use and navigate thru at home, in studio, and on stage, the looper is great 60 sec of whatever you want to rec and play along with, amazing distortions, delays, reverbs, choruses, preamps, amp modules, and wah pedals, it has everything, i like to switch up from stomp box mode to patches on stage all the time, i love it, my pedal search has come to a happy ending.

I bought a G3x from a local music store in San Antonio Tx,. I was very surprised at how good it sounded and at the ease of tweaking and downloading presets from the web. I thought long and hard about the G5 and finally decided to buy one. I own a line 6 Hd 400 and a Hd 500, both are good units but the G5 sounds way better and is much easier to edit. I would much rather jam than figure out how to edit my pedals. The G5 and the G3x are incredible pedals.... The amp models are sweet and totally authentic as well as all of the effects that are available. Kudos to Zoom for making such incredible pedal

I went to the local music store to test out everything I could in this category, sound wise. I found it to compete with all the other products out there. The real selling factor for me was ease of use. The edit and share software and even on board editing are a breeze to use. Most of the presets were close but not quite set for my amp or headphones. Some very easy tweaks and it sound most excellent. I have 12 go to patches that I made copies of, tweaked EQs, and named accordingly, depending on if I'm direct recording, going through my amp or practicing through headphones. I highly recommend using this as a pedal board/ stomp box unit with amp and cab simulators off. Set up the effects chain as you would any pedal board and this thing is so, so much fun! That's not to say the amp and cab simulators are bad in any way. It's just that I love the tone I get through my tube amp with classic stomp box simulators in this unit.
Sound
I turn the amp and cab simulators off then add noise gate, ts808, sonic maximizer (I forget what Zoom calls it, atm), reverb, add a little chorus or flange as needed then right to the front end of my tube amp, for an example of a live, go to patch. I replaced the stock tube and now, I hit that switch for some added tube preamp boost if I need a little extra to cut through during a solo and it sounds awesome!
Features
The Z pedal is very useful. I assign the normal pedal movement of up/ down travel to either the volume or wah. Then, assign the left/ right twist to something like reverb or chorus effect. You can even make the left twist control a different effect or a different parameter within the same effect and the right twist to control a completely separate effect... or have full left/ right twist control 1 effect parameter. Very versatile.
Ease of Use
THE most easiest to use product out there. The edit and share software makes it stoopid easy. On board tweaking is easy and, other than bending down to twist knobs, it can be tweaked quickly on the fly.
Quality
It seems solid. Metal chassis, sturdy switches and pedal. One thing I modified because I didn't like it out of the box was the switch under the Z pedal. Rock it all the way forward to turn on/ off the pedal assigned function. I had to almost stomp my 190lbs all the way forward to activate the switch, tilting the whole unit forward. I added a plastic piece that gave a little more height to the switch and now it's just right.
Value
Best value, easiest to use, great sound quality. What more can you ask for?
Manufacturer Support
Not used so far
The Wow Factor
After I tweaked the presets to my setup, BIGTIME WoW!!!

I like the G5 and am happy I bought it.
Sound
The sound quality for how I use it is pretty good and much easier to get a good sound than a floor pod. Simple easy thing to take to band practice. I plug the output to a palmer PDi09 then from the palmer to the pa board. This has a balanced out but using the palmer sounds better. I use the palmer for my marshall head gigging too.
Features
Its nice to look down and see it as really 4 floor pedals. I don't use the rotating pedal or at least not yet but that sounds good too. I think the boost sounds ok on clean settings but it sounds better with drive to set up the eq as the last pedal and bump a little frequency in the middle and ad some volume from the eq. Agian, this is how I'm working it at bp with no sound guy to boost the solos.
Ease of Use
it is really easy to get good sounds and match volume levels between patches. Matching the volume levels into a pa is always a big problem with any pod and I've had all the generations of the pods. The other thing that is good with this is you can get to its global settings really easy again to set over all output and optimize what you are plugging into... power amp or direct / pa etc.
Quality
seems like it will last , had it a month and have taken it to only 4 practices. This is not a long sample time.
Value
yes, worth the price
Manufacturer Support
haven't had to
The Wow Factor
sorry , nothing appealing to me personally it just works well and is easy to use.

Zoom has good products. The amp simulation is great. Z pedal has a great feel and is very adjustable. Tube Boost feature of course is the real deal for having a tube. I don't know where to start... Previously I owned a VOX Tonelab SE. It was a great unit, but it was a hulk! It was just too huge to tote to and from church to play on the worship team there. I started looking into the Zoom G5. As always I read reviews and watched YouTube videos. It does everything my Tonelab did, and then some! It even has the 12AX7 tube. The dirty and clean sounds are amazing. The coolest part, is I can simply plug and play into my church sound board. I use it both at church and in the metal band I play for. It is simply amazing!
Sound
The sound quality is remarkable! It has simulated and great tube sounds. I can play a variaety of styles, using this great unit.
Features
I like how easy it was to learn the unit's functions. It is extremely user friendly.
Ease of Use
At first I was a bit overwhelmed, thinking I would never learn it. I simply watched a few short YouTube tutorials, and I was practically a master!
Quality
I have only had it for about 2 weeks. I had my Tonelab for several years. I feel it will outlast the Tonelab! :)

The Wow Factor

I have been playing with the G5 for the last hour or so. I just plugged in and started by checking out the factory presets. When I first powered it up, I had to turn off some effects that were on by default (reverb, etc.). I then started flipping through all of the stompbox effects, and was quite pleased. I could not tell the difference between this unit and the original stomp boxes (of the ones that I had owned in the past). I'm loving the looper, and the ability to quickly jump from effect to effect, while looping. I should note that I did all of this before looking at the manual that comes with it. The design is very intuitive. It's best to just think of it as a bunch of stompboxes, chained together on a pedal board, only compact, clean, and not requiring a jumbled mess of patch cords. This unit was also built a lot more solid than I had expected. Having owned the plastic-cased zoom effects of the 1990's era. It could easily be used for gigging, and I am happy to have the clean, space-saving setup at home. Still so many sounds to discover, but I've experienced enough of this pedal to recommend it to anyone looking for an all inclusive multi-effect unit. The amp simulations are spot on, as well.

I have probably owned every Digitech multi-effects pedalboards made. I still like them and use them from time to time. I have also had many Line 6 units too. I currently have the HD 500X and it sounds good after you dial in things whcih can take some time. The nice thing about the Zoom G 5 is you don't hardly need the manual much to get going. Everything is laid out in a stomp box so if you can turn dials on a stomp box you can program this machine. I highly recommend using the edit share software as it makes everything so much quicker. I use to have the Zoom g9.2tt which was a pretty massive board and was laid out nicely. I found the tones somewhat limited on that unit for crunch sounds. The Zoom G5 however, has an abundance of tones and a wide variety. They have shaved off some features to keep the unit small. I would have liked to be able to change banks easier but that was one of the trade offs. I also don't find the tube booster very useful as I don't really care for it's sound. I'm going to change the tube for a better brand and I know that can make a huge difference. Zzounds has been spectacular in their service. My first Zoom G5 had a bad tone booster and no matter what you dialed in it sounded horrible. Zzounds sent me a return label and shipped a replacement ASAP. The second one had the same problem. The 3rd works fine but I'm still not excited about the tone booster function. Maybe after I upgrade the tube I'll find it useful. I would rather have had that switch control tap tempo instead but that's just me. Other than these few things the unit sounds great. The more I use it the better my tones evolve. There are so many variables in the stomp boxes that you should be able to dial in pretty much any type of sound you might need for any situation. I used Zzounds 4 payment plan which is great and once again this company has been awesome with their customer service.

Great sound capabilities, easy to edit especially live, no intense menu navigation to get what you want. I havent really messed with the multimode pedal yet, but I see promise, and as well, it seems really sturdy. I am coming from an HD500, and to be honest, I like the zoom better. While many might disagree, I find the overdrive amp sounds more realistic, the effects more usable and exciting. The HD was great, but the Zoom, at 100 less, seems more usable. If I had one issue, it would be the power cord - it doesnt seem as hearty as the HD power cord, so I want to be more careful on setup and teardown. That said, the zoom has a power switch, the HD did not, and it drove me crazy. Editing on computer is about the same with both of the boards. Honestly, I wasnt expecting to like the zoom as much as I do, but there it is. I use it on my worship team, and on my occasional gigs with cover bands. I dont play as often as I used to (I've played countless gigs over the past 35 years) and my usual set up over the years was a board with individual stomp boxes straight into the front of an amp. With the new boards such as this, I can do the same thing or go into the FOH board, simple. It also has 1/4 outs and an xlr out which makes it easy too. Also, there are no fizzy sounding amps, no really bad effects (unless you dont know how to set them up, or in the chain), and the tube switch really works well - it gives a good warm fat boost with an adjustable tone control.I like this board a lot! The only thing really missing* is an aux in, to run an mp3 player. I'm not really sure why they didnt add that,

Very good sounding unit - excellent sound with the TUBE engaged - easy to program and decent sounding amp models (not necessarily representative of the brand/models but, usable) - better sound overall than the Boss ME-80 (which I also own) - the bad: The LOOP goes through the Tube boost so, if you want to lay down a loop and then use the Tube boost ONLY on the live sound, you can't. Major oversight which I hope can be corrected with future revisions. Another shortcoming: if you use the pedal as a WAH (or other) you CAN'T use it as a VOLUME. Another oversight. On the ME-80 you can. Other than those 2 oversights (which could be fixed with software updates) the unit is a winner and I can use for both acoustic and electric guitars with very good results. Ck it out immediately.

The G5 is great. Chassis, construction, and sound are all better than I imagined. I did a lot of research ahead of buying the G5. One reason was the looper for jamming and tentative layering of guitar parts (the bass synths/bass sounds achievable make due for layering that as well). It includes a drum machine with a couple dozen various styles (like 4/4, not different drum sounds). All the switches and knobs are high quality. As well are the amp and pedal sims are very good. They sound really natural. They may not have as wide a range of sounds as all the original equipment but you'd have to have an extra bedroom to store it all. There are more than enough sound options. some of the presets are pretty bizarre but you have to have something to overwrite! At a fraction of the cost compared to some of its competitors, it is a great buy.

after reviewing many multi effects pedals out there, I settled on the G5. So far I am very pleased with my choice. The effects available are vast and most are quite tasty. A few, yes, are of questionable musical value, but you never know. One big rave I have is for zZounds - they put this thing on my front porch much faster than I had imagined, and I believe they were as fast with my last purchase.

Its a great pedal, BUT if you're more of an analog guy this isn't the pedal for you.

"Zoom does not support users after the fact"

I bought a C5.1T a couple of years back and within a few weeks bought a multicore processor box with low latency intel chipset. That box was of course built to run on Windows 7 and has no discernable wait time when playing directly into Ableton Live 8. Of course zoom told me at the time they have no intention of writing new drivers for the C5.1T even though it was being sold well into the life cycle of windows 7. A check of their website showed today a couple years later that they have been true to their word. I promised them then that I would make sure that people knew that if they purchase one of their products that they would be stuck in time platform wise and now I have been true to my word. I'll keep up the good work.
