TASCAM US-200 USB Audio Customer Review

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
i been checking around internet looking for real review on this unit(including youtube) since it was announced in march 2011, i'm satisfied with the product , would recommend to anyone. But if you are going pro...this is not it...i was about to pick up tascam us-122mkII but i think i decided right to pick this up and not having to deal with driver issue... I already start making some demo with it, probably you can see on youtube sooner or later!
Sound
Sounds nice like how it sounds on Monitor out, no complaints , it sounds like typical usb-sound cards , it has no noise issue with Bass direct in and even Balanced In from my bass amp since it has TRS(make sure u have the right cable),
Features
Not many features like some other branded products but for a price you are paying, it is good for beginner and portable situation, USB-bus powered is lovely, no messy cables and need of outlets. light , portable size, Hi-z feature will be very useful for guitar and bass
Ease of Use
simple , easy , no problem so far in Win7 64 bits...better than older model that have no support that has been posted around internet! plug n record!
Quality
product is made in China , externals build is great ,Dont feel like cheap plastics but im sure it is not made for throwing/dropping. knobs are little tight (which is good) but the build around ports look little cheap, but over-all, it is good for its price, monitor sound greats like sound card , not super good like audiophile level. No noise, work great!
Value
Bang for buck? Totally...this is good for a simple home studio and beginner. i would recommended it, MAKE SURE u have yourself a 7200rpm hard drive or SSD that program would record it to...so it will smooth!! and of course, a good computer or laptop will do the job for you, read for specification in manual!
Manufacturer Support
i Emailed them about the product, they answer after my second reply, i hope they can do better...apart from that i think they do give pretty good support , lots of service location around the world...
The Wow Factor
product is great, look great, if u are starting to do simple recording or trying to learn how to , this is a way to go.

"Good bang for the buck, but it's not the best bang for your buck."

I'm hoping to get two years out of it. Hoping... I know I could probably get 4 or more years out of a higher-end, slightly more expensive interface. However, you never know.... It might surprise me! And then I would be pleasantly surprised!
Sound
It's good for a low-end audio interface.
Features
For an entry-level, low-end audio interface, this has a lot of bang for the buck. It's not easy to get two XLR inputs, and two outputs, AND a MIDI in/out in an interface that is around the price of this one. I wish the two sets of outputs were 1/4" outputs! That's a real bummer that they're consumer-level and not pro. I've got a bunch of these interfaces in a lab setting, so they're only really used with headphones instead of monitors, so it doesn't really bother me that much, but if I had a good set of monitors, I'd want professional level outputs.
Ease of Use
I'm giving it lower marks here because I am disappointed with how this device works with Pro Tools. It says it is compatible; however, there is a big issue with the hardware buffer size. I cannot use this device with low latency during recording - Pro Tools will not even LAUNCH unless I go into this Tascam's control panel and choose "High Latency." I guess it's better than the other way around - this thing WILL play large mixes; and I've become accustomed to muting the tracks I record on in Pro Tools host-based systems, so I guess I can teach my students to do that, but it's just kind of disappointing that it's not as easy to work with in Pro Tools as some of the Avid interfaces are. You also can't change the hardware buffer in the session - you have to quit Pro Tools and relaunch. Although I guess that doesn't matter because there's no reason to change it - just leave it set to the highest setting because you can't set it very low anyway.
Quality
It's average quality. Considering the price, I should probably give it higher marks. I wouldn't want to use this in a high-traffic college lab, or give it to a teenager to beat it up. My lab is a private lab and isn't "open" or unmonitored, so I'm sure these will last me a little while. But I'd be really afraid of these breaking if they were in a public college or high school lab, or if they were handed over to young students who don't take care of things as well as they should. It's not the most durable looking or feeling interface.
Value
I'd say yes, it is probably worth the price, because it is priced pretty cheap for the features that it has.
The Wow Factor
Now that I own it, I wouldn't really recommend it; however you have to imagine that I am used to using very nice gear. This is the cheapest thing I've bought in a while. But I would probably spend a bit more and get a higher quality product if I had it to do over.
