"I really like the DR-40 so far!"

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
If something happened to this one, I would definitely want to get another one.
Sound
I have been very happy with the sound so far.
Features
The XLR's are a great addition. I was prepared to purchase the DR07mkII when I saw this one. It doesn't appear you can set the XLR levels individually. That would be a nice addition. The line in allows you to hook your mixer's balanced outputs into the XLR jacks....this opens up a whole new set of options.
Ease of Use
The menus are fairly intuitive. I have checked out the manual for some items, but I think most people could figure out the basics by playing around with it, as I did.
Quality
The DR40 seems reasonably well made. It seems like it could last awhile, although it IS mostly plastic. I would say it is comparable or better to other units of this type and price point.
Value
I would compare this one to the Zoom H4N. There are pros and cons to each, but for my personal needs, the Tascam had what I wanted at around $100 less. The unit is worth the price. However, if you want a longer USB cable, windscreen, desk tripod, carrying case, or any other accessories, you have to pay extra for them. And they aren't cheap. ($30 for the power supply, $50 for the "dead cat")
Manufacturer Support
I have not dealt with the Tascam support and therefore cannot rate it.
The Wow Factor
If you are looking for a portable digital recorder with a lot of options, this should definitely be a model to consider.

"Dependability issues"

I love the features and sound quality and simplicity of use. However, the dependability of this unit is not good. The output jack stopped working just before the 1yr warrantly expired, paid them $50 of labor to fix it. Now the warranty is expired and the unit stopped powering on all together. I can't justify spending more money on it to get it repaired. So I'm $250 into it and it won't even power on so I can use it. I am seriously disappointed with this purchase, and would not recommend it to anyone I know.

Super item with great features. I also have a DR-05 and love 'em both. Got the DR 40 because of Phantom power ands XLR inputs. My only grip is with both units using the built in Pres have very very low gain.Especially with my low gain RE-20 So i use a Cloudlifter CL-1 (another great product I bought from zZounds) to boost the gain and it works great. Real good stuff !!!!!! Thanks you zZounds for Play n Pay and your virtually over night delivery. ..... SO THERE !!!

"Great hand held recorder!"

Just got mine the other day and began using it to practice vocals. The microphone is very sensitive and picks up just about everything in the room that is to include fans, background noises etc. The little speaker on the bottom that replays your audio makes everything sound it was recorded in the rain. That being said those are the worst features of it. The best parts about it is everything else. This is a very light weight recorder with the option of adding up to 2 mics XLR or 1/4. You can use headphones with it and record on multi track with up to 4 tracks. You can also record with several different voice recording arrangements like mono, stereo, over dubbing... and I forgot what the last one was I think it's called Dual.I picked this one up for the specific purpose of practicing vocals and those features really come in handy it also has the option to add "effects" on to our mix but I haven't used them yet as I just got mine. With the stock microphones in a very quiet place you could probably do a nice recording. using an after market mic would probably be better quality wise but for quick song and performance ideas it's fantastic. The only real complaint I have about the unit is that Tascam should have included a case for the recorder and a windscreen or popfilter for it at the very least. You're almost forced to uby the DR 40 accessory kit just to get those pieces that really should have came with it. I would say that a case would have been the most ideal because it's easy to damage the unit with sensitive pieces sticking out or getting debris in your mics or XLR jacks so if you do pick up one try to find a case for it to protect your investment.*funny side note I brought this open box and the person before me had recordings of them singing songs in Spanish. It was a good laugh!

"High quality recorder"

This thing works great! Very good quality recordings through the built-in condensers, and the line/mic inputs are great too. I use the external mike inputs to check the miking of my drum kit. (very useful as there isn't always someone to play it for me while I listen from the back of the venue). I did have to spent some hours reading the manual and learning the menus, but it's a high quality tool and does everything it claims. it was worth every penny.

Have had the DR-40 for a month and am impressed so far. It was recommended by a friend in the AV biz so I'm not surprised at all. Great features many of which I've not used yet but I'm still learning the unit. I was also VERY impressed at how quickly I received my $25 rebate...wow! Never received any rebate within two weeks of sending it in. Top quality product and service!

"Its awesome"

Its a Tascam. I think that says it all in terms of a 5 star rating. It records beautifully, is exquisitely sensitive to sound and has more features than one will ever need. Its durable and has so much flexibility between the built in mics and the external inputs. My only drawback (and I waver on whether this makes this a 4 star review because of it) is that my older one (which my son took) could stand up on its end (the end opposite the built in mics). This one has to lay flat as the sockets for the mic inputs are on the bottom and the release mechanism for each of the two inputs prevents one from standing it up. The old 4 channel I had (bought nearly a decade ago and can't remember the model number) could stand up and one could view the input settings and the peaks for each track as one sang or played. This was huge if one is recording oneself using the built-in mics. This one, because of the mic releases, has to lay flat which prevents one from being able to view the input meters if you are the one playing. So you kind of have to guess or prop it up if you want to see. If you stand it up, then the mics aren't pointing towards you. I do like the ability to adjust the angle of the built in input mics though, although I am not sure how much difference this really makes, but being able to direct them towards two different people playing may be enough to give you better source definition.
