The Silvertone 955 acoustic's Engelmann spruce top and rosewood back and sides capture the same vibe and tone as its mid-century ancestors.

I ended up in the unfortunate situation last week of needing money, the only thing I could do was to sell my beloved Martin HD-28, I thought I would never find anything else to be happy with but surprisingly and thankfully I was wrong. I spent a good deal of time browsing zZounds and looking at all the acoustic guitars on the site. I was just about to purchase an Ibanez but I came across the Silvertone and I immediately noticed that it looked a lot like my HD-28. It seemed to have the same body shape, color and wood combo, etc. I found some reviews which were good and I found that it was made by Sammick which has the ability to make great guitars, so I decided to take a chance on it and I'm glad I did.First I would like to say that zZounds is great, as always. 2 day shipping for free! Plus insanely affordable payments. Now, the guitar, unboxing was a pleasant surprise, the fit and finish is very very good, the guitar has a beautiful gloss finish and the neck carve is excellent. The top is spruce and it's got a nice dark color like a well aged Martin. The guitar is absolutely gorgeous. It's extremely difficult to believe that it only cost $279!As far as playing goes, well the action was absolutely perfect right out of the box, zero adjustment needed. A quick tune and I was off to the races. As I mentioned before, the neck carve is just great, it's somewhere around a Gibson 60's neck but slightly different. The frets are finished well but do have slight edges to them but it's nothing to complain about. The binding on the neck does not go over the fret edges but it's very well done anyway. The guitar plays effortlessly and is a real joy. The sound from this guitar is satisfying, it has a nice bass response and is very articulate. Each note is clear and defined to the point that mistakes just jump out of it, so it may even help you to play better! The tone does have a good round sound with balance across the spectrum but it is what I would call bright. In comparison to the Martin this guitar has tons and tons of top end. The Martin is very bottom heavy and the high notes are smooth, on the Silvertone the bottom and middle are smooth but the top end really jumps out. It's not a bad thing as I can see it sitting very well in a mix or a jam, but playing alone it is quite toppy. Overall I am glad and impressed. For the price it is more than worth it, this doesn't replace the Martin completely but it does fill the void of having to sell that guitar. It doesn't compare to the Martin in terms of tone BUT for the price it's amazingly close, the workmanship is right there with Martin (in my opinion) and the feel is also just as good, the looks are close as well. The only thing it's missing is the huge bottom end of the Martin but that's about all it's missing. Buy it an enjoy!

I was rather surprised at the fit and finish of the guitar at first feel, it is as good a quality as any other guitar in its class, if not better, I was a little disappointed that they would put such cheap tuning machines on such a nice guitar but that is an easy fix, the block inlays look good as well, no issues with the frets or anything finish wise, it did come with a fully compensated saddle which appears to be bone as well as the nut. I did have to set the action on the neck as it was way too low. Other than that the feel and sound of the guitar is IMO very good, getting an Engelman spruce top with rosewood back and sides with the look and feel of this guitar is a deal for sure, I was going to buy the yamaha fg820 I'm glad I went with this instead I have the fg730 and sorry yamaha it doesn't hold up against this guitar, huge projection, great tone and looks fantastic good job Silvertone glad I decided to give you a chance put better quality tuners on this guitar and a killer it will be!!!!!!

I love this guitar. Has nice sound plays almost like an electric.(after) i got it adjusted. When i got it the strings buzzed. I adusted the truss rod. Then the sixth string at the g note buzzed..raised bridge a little. Then too high at 12th fret. Took shim out of saddle adjusted truss rod a couple times. Dont know what happened but it plays perfect. Put some martin retro tony rice strings on it. Drop d booms .this guitar is great even in higher end guitars this is loud(and im a banjo player). Ive had epi masterbuilt aj500 epi dr100 epi220vs. This guitar is better than any low priced guitar ive had. I prefer it over my friend d18 and gibson j45.

"Awesome instrument but horrible setup"

I was very excited to receive this guitar from zZounds. Initially I looked at the fit and finish and was very pleased. But in playing it I found that the action was so low that the strings buzzed all over the neck. I made a relief adjustment with the truss rod on the neck and that helped some but still didn't do the trick so I replaced the saddle. That help some more but still had string buzz when playing open chords. The nut is too low causing resulting Buzz. My solution replace the nut and the saddle with a bone nut and saddle. Quality control on the factory level in Indonesia is not good when it comes to this particular instrument.
