I was on a mission to upgrade my recording chain and decided to go with the Portico 5017 and man did I make the right choice!! It just sounds amazing on vocals!!! I was using a GA project setup(mic pre, separate compressor, and eq), but this thing, alone, is just a whole other animal, when it comes to the sound it produces, everything is just so clear and warm and it’s so easy to dial in your sound! And the compressor works brilliantly! There’s also a silk option, which adds some color to the signal, which a lot of people seem to like, but I don’t for my voice, but combined with some plugins in my daw it provides another sound palette altogether. My current signal chain is: AKG214 mic, to the Portico 5017, to the Motu 828es audio interface, to my Mac. And yes all the mentioned gear is from zZounds, outside of the computer. Save yourself a lot of headaches, watching endless videos, reading post after post, reading through endless articles, I’ve done that for you, just buy the 5017 and completely upgrade your sound / recordings.
