This is a very nice phono/headphone preamp. Quiet even with headphones on. 3 inputs are great for my phone and future tape deck. The bass and treble really do work very well and straight up it is neutral, uncolored. I have a Sansui FR-D3 turntable with a Goldring Elan cartridge, nothing fancy, and a Eris e8 powered studio monitor and that's it. With the tone controls of the pa550 and the e8's shaping controls I'm able to dial in a good sounding record recording, without a separate eq box, more connections and more money. So with the pa 550 I have it all. My akg k701's, 32ohm's, sounds great. Now for 130 bucks don't expect a 500 dollar tube preamp or the like, but for a 130 bucks this is very respectable preamp on a budget
