This is my second ovation purchase and it did not disappoint. Its pickup sound quality matches that of my model 1615. The narrow rounded neck with jumbo frets was as nice to play on as my gibson MM; especially when I replaced the strings with a lighter guage of electic strings while the tension rod adjustments were "seasoned" in. Now the neck action is perfect for my playing style of R&B. This guitar was in competition with the Epi dot type semi-hollows; but I like what I got esp. at a Boxing day slashout price. I've read the other review and agree with his comments - my only advise - dont play an OV without a strap.

this is my 5th ovation, and because it was a limited run I had to buy it.a shallow bowl back with awesome looking one piece woodgrain top in trans ruby red,a gorgeous rosette, and fantasic tonal quality.i have already recorded a song with it for our debut cd,and it just sounds so full and rich, that it adds a polished sound to the song.

Musical Background:

yes i am a professional player with only 6 short years of playing.i play drums ,bass, and vocals.

Musical Style:

our band proteus is a hard classic rock style,a melodramatic psychedelia pop,and heavy rock band.

"OK guitar if you're willing to sacrifice a little quality..."

I sent mine back after playing it for a week. I wanted a guitar that I couldn't put down and that I could use for gigging. Instead.. it was an instrument that I didn't want to pick up.
Sound
Guitar sounded great. I mean it was ok acoustic... but sounded really nice through an acoustic amp. I couldn't get over how the guitar felt. It felt cheap when holding it and playing it... I'm sure part of it is the contoured back... but it just felt 'plasticy' all over.
Features
Electronics have an onboard tuner which seemed to work fine. This guitar is fantastic if you're just looking for an acoustic that is bright and clean when running through an amp. It's also nice because it doesn't feed back like other acoustics due to the unique sound holes.
Ease of Use
Works just like any other guitar. Sit down and play. Electronics were easy.. nothing different or difficult about it.
Quality
I know the guitar isn't cheap as I paid for it... but it didn't feel like a $500 guitar. I know that the ovation rounded back makes the guitar unique ... but the entire instrument just felt cheaply made to me. The guitar also came with dated booklets from Ovation. Made me feel like the guitar had been sitting in the Ovation warehouse for a long time... also made me question Ovation's attention to quality and detail if they're going to sell new instruments with extremely outdated booklets regarding their products. I mean... the booklet about the guitar was printed in the 80's. I believe there was a reference in the intro saying that the ovation was 'the guitar' for the 1980's.
Value
I'd say no. After playing this guitar... I wouldn't expect to pay more than $300 for it new. Looks nice... but doesn't feel or play as nice as it looks. If you need an acoustic that looks good, sounds good plugged in and won't feed back then you should consider an ovation. Just know... that based on my experience with this guitar... which I would consider to be 'middle of the road' for the ovation family. Just know it's not going to feel like a nice acoustic that you would buy for the same amount... you sacrifice a little.
Manufacturer Support
I didn't have to deal with Ovation. I actually sent this guitar back to ZZounds after a week. ZZounds was great as usual and handled my return and refund very promptly.
The Wow Factor
Guitar looks good from the front. I think the type of music you play would affect this too. It's a unique looking guitar and I don't know if you're 'street cred' is in question if you whip this thing out at a gig.
