I've been playing since 1968 and I've owned literally every brand of Tube amplifier out there, at some point or another. In the end, I always seem to be pulled back to the warmth and drive of a Marshall combo. This particular amp sounds VERY similar to the Marshall Studio 15 I used extensively for recordings, in the late 1980s-1990's. However this DSL20CR has 2 channels, and a very vintage "plexy type" warmth in each channel, a warmth I just can't duplicate with either my Helix, or either of my Fender modeling amps. At 20 tube watts, this amp is still loud enough to use as a clean pedal platform LIVE in small/medium clubs. I upgraded my speaker to a NEO Creamback, saving almost 5 pounds and adding back a lot more vintage warmth.

Just a great sounding amp!!! for 599 you can’t beat it !!!sounds like a much more expensive amp and 20 W is plenty!! clean channels a little weak definitely need a better speaker to get more bottom end but overall it’s a keeper and you can’t beat that tone in the low wattage mode cranked about 3/4 of the way!!!!wowser pull the trigger on this one you’ll be glad you did!!!!

"Best Amp Ever! Nothing beats a cranked Marshall !!"

This is absolutely the greatest amp I've ever played so far! I was on the fence between this and Fender Blues Junior Tweed and a Fender Bassbreaker 15 and this combo won and I have no regret. It pairs so well with my 58' Les Paul. I can get that sweet Gary Moore blues tone all the way up to some aggressive Jimmy Page early Zeppelin with a little more drive of course. And did I mention that this thing is loud. It'll rattle the walls and ceiling. And best of all it's got the power and saturation I need sound wise. Clocking in a 36lbs and being compact it sure won me over its big brother the DSL40CR which is nearly 52lbs yikes and way more bulkier. My back has already started thanking me loll.... Do yourself a favor and buy this amp and pair it with your favorite les paul. As far as the speaker goes, some might rag on it but it sounds great to me. Maybe it's my guitar. But my sound I'm overly satisfied with. Trust me. There is no better feeling in the world !

"Nice Marshall growl"

Nice amp for home recording. Has a nice mid-range heavy Marshall tone. The clean or "classic gain" channel is great for pedals. It seems to really love the Fulltone OCD and Bug Muff. One thing to note is that this amp does lack some bottom end. I ran it through a 4x10 extension cab as a test and that fully resolved the issue. I live in an apartment so having a really bottom heavy sound usually means a noise complaint. For recording, especially late at night, the lack of bottom end is an advantage rather than a problem for me. Ext cab or the 40 watt version is the solution if this is a major issue for you. Overall it sounds great, it records extremely well and the green channel is really a pedal machine.

"Almost the perfect small amp"

The first amp arrived with an annoying background hiss. From what I’ve read, this is a common problem with early production models. I returned the amp and promptly received its replacement, which also had the same hiss. I contemplated keeping the amp despite the noise, but ultimately decided that I couldn’t justify paying good money for a faulty amp. The tone was what almost made me keep the amp. The deciding factor was the Celestion Seventy 80 speaker. You don’t realize how much it holds back the amp until you hear it with a quality speaker. I tried a Celestion Greenback and a WGS Green Beret and the difference was remarkable. For the cost of the DSL20CR plus a much needed speaker upgrade, you can buy the DSL40CR, which has more features and does come with a decent speaker. I really wanted to love the 20CR but it’s more feature-rich and powerful sibling won out. I ended up returning the second amp and am eagerly awaiting my new DSL40CR.

"A studio quality sound at entry level pricing !"

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars

This is a very capable amp - not just for the money.I tried a number of guitars both single coil and humbuckers - this amp covers a lot of territory both in terms of sounds and power.Uncharacteristically for a Marshall the Clean / classic gain channel is genuinely superb, you can fine-tune break-up, its smooth, touch sensitive and one of the best "out-of-the-box" clean crunchs available at any price - its actually very refined. The higher gain channel also sweeps across vintage to modern, initially this sounded a bit "rough" but with a few hours use it has now "smoothed -out" also, providing distinctively marshall tones. once again suiting anything you plug into it. At this price you cannot go wrong, it sounds great, has plenty of power, its versatile, and well construced - its a keeper.

Crazy that this amp is now almost double the price . I paid 600 for it . reverb is the only weakness . the seventy eighty speaker is sufficient.

"You don't get enough"

First, it has a closed back so there is nowhere to put the power cord. Second, it does not come with a cover so I had to buy one to take it to a gig. Third the stock speaker is very harsh, and not organic at all, so I installed a Celestion Cream Back and that helped. Fourth I always play with reverb bit the built-in reverb is very weak even turned up all the way. The high gain is way more than I will ever use and it's noisy. I'm a Blues player who gigs twice a week and maybe once I add a reverb pedal it might be usable, just beware.

"Some good some bad"

I have been playing off and on for over 50 years and now play Blues. I have had many amps, mostly Fender but was looking for something different. This Marshell is very different. Play it clean and it sounds good, not great. If you want clean go with Fender. The gain is OK but turn it up and it has a bad hiss. The ultra channel is much louder than the classic channel no matter where the volume is set or the gain. That makes it hard to switch channels on the stage. This amp is usable and will cut through the mix, but I think I think I could have spent my money more wisely.
