"Martin DM: An Exceptional Guitar For The Money"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I expect to be satisfied with this guitar for the rest of my life. Will I replace it? Not likely. Will I supplement it? Yeah, that's kind of my way. I have a "few" guitars, but if something were to happen to this one, I'd definitely try to find another DM with which to replace it.
Sound
One of the best sounding guitars I've owned in over 50 years of playing. Very well-balanced. Haven't recorded with it yet, but I expect it to perform well. Excellent projection.
Features
I've played classical guitar for years. I'm not only used to, but I prefer the lack of ornamentation that is the norm for classicals. I have two Tacomas that are similar in appearance to the Martin DM and love the understated, simple beauty of these guitars. The materials used are top quality.
Ease of Use
It's a Martin. Great set-up from the factory. I like a guitar with an action that's kind of high, so Martin's factory set-up works well for me.
Quality
Again, it's a Martin.
Value
Definitely worth its typical selling price.
Manufacturer Support
I'll rate support as a "10," not because I've ever had to use Martin's support (I haven't) but because friends of mine who have have found them to be reasonable to deal with.
The Wow Factor
As I said earlier, the understated, simple beauty of this guitar is one of its big draws for me as far as appearance goes. I'm more about sound than cosmetics and this guitar delivers the sound.

"An affordable Martin with a very expensive sound. You can't go wrong!!"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
I am very happy with my Martin DM and do not expect to buy another guitar to replace it. I believe this guitar will serve me well for many years to come.
Sound
Has a very bright sound, perfect for the music I play. I have owned a number of acoustic guitars over the last 30 years, and this has to be the best sounding guitar I've ever owned.
Features
No fancy frills, just a beautiful looking and sounding guitar.
Ease of Use
Acoustic guitars are usually a little harder to play than an electric but this Martin DM is very easy on the fingers and wrist.
Quality
The quality of this guitar is excellent, Martin definitley lives up to it's reputation for a well built instrument. It stays in tune very well and has a consistent quality of sound.
Value
For the price and quality of this guitar, you can't find one better anywhere.
Manufacturer Support
Have not needed support, but I am assured it is available if needed.
The Wow Factor
This is not a fancy guitar but it is definitley a practical buy.

"A great guitar for a great price."

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
A great guitar, nearly as good as my more expensive Larrivee.
Sound
Deep, rich and very even tone with the very distinctive Martin bass punch.
Features
Very few a plain jane, the only fancy feature is the very good quality case.
Ease of Use
Easy to play, mine came with the perfect action for both bluegrass picking and fingerstyle.
Quality
Godd quality a well made guitar although it is very plain.
Value
Great value for the money.
Manufacturer Support
Don't know.
The Wow Factor
I love it.

"This guitar shows why C.F. Martin has been around for 170 years"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
You can never have enough guitars. I will own others but I will always keep this one.
Sound
Brite! crisp highs, all strings equally resonate, intonations are accurate at every fret. tuning can be changed and returned with ease, stays in tune without constantly having to adjust.
Features
The case is great! It is solid and the guitar floats into with an almost airtight fit.
Quality
I can't say enough good things about my DM. I am not going to subject it to adverse conditions just to see if it will stand up. I am sure that this one will last me until I pass it on to my son who plays also.
Value
well worth the price
Manufacturer Support
After I purchased my DM and played it a while. I could tell that the action could be sweetened a little and my local dealer made the adjustments for me free of charge and installed a new set of strings. If it were any better it would play itself.
The Wow Factor
It is not as pretty as a D-35. But when you pick it up and put fingers to wood it becomes a thing of beauty.

"An affordable Martin with big tone."

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I dream of a guitar with a gloss finish maybe an Alhambra Dreadnaught with either solid mahogany, ovangcol or rosewood back and sides. These spanish made guitars are great value and as I live in Denmark I pay a lot of taxes when I buy a Martin guitar(about 30% more expensive than US) so you get a greater value when you buy a european manufactured instrument. How
Sound
Big sound, very full and expressive. Like all Martin dreadnaughts (exept the x-series which I think is cheaply made) it's got a lot of volume maby not the loudest compared to more expensive Martins like the D-28 or similar, but thats also what the price says-you get what you pay for right!?. Like all quality guitars it suits strumming and fingerstyle equally and it has a more bright tone than the D-28, not it lacks bass but the highs are very clear and bright. Personally I like a guitar with a gloss finish so i won't the forever, not because of the sound, but you have to take a little more care of the satin finish
Features
It's got a great hardshell case, thas the only important accessorie I can think of.
Quality
There's no flaws at all on this guitar and it's manufactured very nice and smooth on the surface. The neck feels very nice in spite of the satin finsh-again I like a gloss finish better. As I mentioned before you have to be extra careful with the satin finished surface on the top of the guitar and this could be a problem if you are a heavy strummer. As I Myself plays mostly fingerstyle it's not a problem but it annoys me with the sweat marks where I'm resting my arm. This is the only flaw I've got but it's only a cosmetic issue.
Value
The Martin DM is great value and sounds as good as the D-28 but it's not the exact same tone and if you expect that it's probably not for you
Manufacturer Support
Haven't had any experiences.
The Wow Factor
It looks great, however not very appealing in my opinion because of the satin finish but it's beautiful in an understated way.

"Best Guitar I have ever owned."

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
It will many years before I will part with my Martin DM. If fact only when I close my eyes for the last time will I ever depart from owning it. It will be passed on to my son at that point.
Sound
The Martin DM series is the best guitar I have own (and I have several). The quality of the sound is second to none and very easy to play. I have been playing guitar for several years now and have owned more than 24 acoustic guitars during that time. Martin really came through with the DM. You just can't go wrong with this investment.
Ease of Use
Very fun and easy to play. I had a pick-up installed under the saddle about 1 year ago, it sounds as good through an amp as it does unplugged.
Quality
Would have expected nothing less and once again Martin proved them selfs with the DM series. Don't let the price fool you. It is a great guitar.
Value
For the money, you want regret it. If you are just beginning to play or if you have been at it for years, the DM series is an all around great guitar for every level of player.

"The Best I ever had!"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
i will be happy with this for the rest of my life because the guitar gets better sounding and looking with age.
Sound
The sound of this guitar is second to none. It bellows deep, rich sounds with every chord or note. With age the guitar sounds even better
Features
The Mahogony back and sides make this guitar a permanent fixture in any household.
Ease of Use
You can either be an expert looking for more sound or a begginer looking for a guitar to last a lifetime.
Quality
You don't have to worry about this guitar breaking. Everything is sealed and crafted perfectly. Wheather you are on the road or at home the guitar will last a lifetime.
Value
I would have paid for a $3,000 guitar until i heard the sound of this.
Manufacturer Support
the company is exteremly nice and will do their best to find a solution to your problem.
The Wow Factor
This guitar just seems to call you. You could be looking at a $3,000 Taylor, and out of the corner of your eye you can look at Martin DM and go bye it immediatly.

"Spruce Top Separated"

Overall: 0.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
After about 2 years into ownership my Martin DM separated at the seam in the spruce top. Martin’s Lifetime Guarantee does not include the wood. What? So they would not stand behind their product. A certified Martin service center went to bat for me and was able to get Martin to pay for the repair, but it still has an ugly re-glued seam down the center of the top. Stay away from the DM and Martin Guitars in general.

"Best bang for the buck"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I will always buy Martin acoustics, and will go with the DM again for a budget/practice model.
Sound
The tone and volume of this guitar is everything you'd expect from a Martin. Much, much richer and fuller than "comparable" guitars with laminate sides & back.
Features
Wish it had an ebony fretboard and a finished top, but then I'd have paid $200 more! The guitar plays and sounds wonderful as it is - laminate sides & back, rosewood fingerboard, plain top, Martin tuners.
Quality
Quality is second-to-none. I was a bit nervous at first because it was a bit lighter than any of my previous acoustics, but this turned out to be a non-issue.
Value
This guitar is sells for an oustanding price for the value.
Manufacturer Support
I have had no company contact or warranty experience with this guitar.
The Wow Factor
Not the flashiest thing in the world, but then what quality acoustic really is? Its built very well, and shows it. Basically a plain-jane item that sounds killer.

"Good value, nice guitar."

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Excellent instrument until you save enough money to but a real guitar.
Sound
Nice, rich sound. Best I've played in this price range.
Features
Nothing fancy. Just your basic acoustic.
Quality
Seems well made although not very durable. I'm very careful handling it because it doesn't appear it can take much punishment. Definately a "play at home" guitar.
Value
Since it's a Martin, it should hold its value until I'm ready to move up to the next level (D-17 or D-18)
Manufacturer Support
Haven't dealt directly with Martin but the dealer was very helpful and gave me a pretty good deal.
