If you're looking for Fender type cleans or Marshall type cleans, keep looking. Same goes for the overdriven tones. This thing has its own thing going on. The cleans are very good, but they're not the mid scooped Fender cleans. Nor, are they the brighter sounding Marshall clean. They somewhere in between. The overdriven tones are, again, their own thing. Yes, the design is kind of like hot rodded JCM 800, not nearly as bright. And, the clarity and touch dynamics are absolutely outstanding. For reference, I own a Germino Club 40 ('67 Marshall JMP clone), Fender Twin Reverb and an Orange. I would put this amp up against any of them in terms of note definition, clarity, dynamics, etc... I run the gain and volume around 1:00 or 2:00 and I don't even have to roll the volume off my guitar. I can clean it up VERY nicely by just using a softer touch, or finger picking the strings. It is that good. If you're looking for a single channel, no knob twisting, plug and play amp, this one should be high on your list of amps to check out.
