"Awesome stereo channel strip for budget minded tone freaks."

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars

This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
I've had this for years now, and I've bought more Meek ( a OneQ ), and also a UA LA610mKII ( because I could, and because I wanted a tube pre in my studio, not because the JoeMeek stuff missed anything for my needs : you sometimes, we just want stuff ). It's heads and shoulders above average mixing board channel strips, and on par with high-end strips that retail for a lot more money.
Sound
Very high quality sound if you know how to set levels and use EQ and compression.
Features
A very complete stereo preamplifier. It's actually 2 pres in one as the Iron switch redefines the general preamp tone and adds punch and color. Very clean with the Iron switch off, very thick and colored with the Iron switch on... The rest of the machine is equally impressive with a great sounding EQ, a very effective compressor, and an insert per channel, as well as line imputs... the onboard convertors are really good too, so you can feed you audio interface with converted audio via TOS link or Spdif...
Ease of Use
It's not rocket science, and the pre sounds great. Just set the levels right and dial to taste.
Quality
I've had mine for years, and I have yet to experience a single glitch. No scratchy pot, not failure whatsoever.
Value
Sounds just as good as unit costing 3 times as much. Great great value.
Manufacturer Support
Talked to Allan on the PMI forum : very nice, helpful person.
The Wow Factor
This is highly under-rated as a preamplifier, and should be considered before spending anymore money that this costs. I also own a UA LA610mKII and consider the JoeMeek unit in the same league. It's solid, looks good, but most of all sounds absolutely great.

The Mic-Pre's are clean with a touch of warmness. Not totally Clean. I like what it does on male vocals. Great if your going in straight to your interface with an electric guitar! EQ is a great feature, to me its very useful. Great looking unit. IRON Tranny is awesome, very good sound! Recommended highly at this price...!!!

"Just not really worth the price."

Already been replaced with a lowly art dps ii and alesis 3630 for less than half the cost. No level issues between channels on the art useing the same exact setup I had the meek in(wonder why?) and tbqh, I like the character of the art and the consistancy of the alesis over the preamp and comp of the meek. The only thing I kinda miss is the clarity provided by the meek, but that only worked in certain circumstances(and i have a firestudio with nice clean preamps anyways). The dps ii spdif out works just as nicely so I dont really feel like ive lost anything(except the nice meek eq(not worth it))
Sound
Sounded pretty good, the preamps added a lot of detail and clarity, the eq sounded great, and the preamps broke up nicely.
Features
I mean, its a dual channel strip with eqs and comps, but the stereolink is garbage as its next to impossible to match the slope control on both channels, making stereo compression inconsistant and more frustrating than worth it, also doesnt link the eq controls so matching eq seetings perfectly is just as frustrating. Also, the vu meters kinda suck. I mainly got this for the spdif out which adds two preamps to my firestudio project which has 8.
Ease of Use
See my features paragraph for why I am giving this a 4.
Quality
The plastic plate that covered up the non-existant optical out fell into the unit with the tiniest little push(i was confused as to why it wasnt included but was later told optical outs were removed from the product) when I was examing to see where the optical out was. It then was stuck inside the unit and rattled around anytime you moved it. Also, the right channel was about 6db quieter than the elft when fed with the same signal and set with the same settings. Just another issue that made useing this for any kind of stereo work pretty much impossible.
Value
You are better off with a couple quality mono channel strips as this thing is useless for stereo work and its sound is not really worth the price difference between this and other inexpensive preamps. If you are not trying to build a pro studio, there is gear just as good for like half the price.
Manufacturer Support
I called pmi audio to address my issues and was basically told it 'shouldnt be doing that' without any reason as to why. I understand a lot of people are ignorant to audio technology, but it doesnt take a rocket scientist to understand that a dual stereo preamp should behave similarly regardless of which channel you are using. The levey wanted me to send it in for repair, but at this point I decided that a unit that retails most places for nearly 1000 should not have these issues.
The Wow Factor
I really wanted this unit and enjoyed some of the time I spent with it, but I think its aesthetic value kinda overshadowed its actual value for the money.
