"Invaluable, affordable piece of gear"

I don't write a lot of reviews, but I was compelled to for this one. This is the savior of my rig. I simply pop it into the effects loop of my 20 watt Studio Vintage Marshalls and boom...instant manageable volume. Any Marshall without a master volume and with an effects loop will reap the benefits from this nifty device. Without having to spend hundreds on an attenuator. Simply put, I absolutely love this thing. Best gear purchase I've made in a while. Thank you for making it, JHS!!

Works just as described. Simple operation and hook up. I use it with a Peavey Classic 50 212 because the amp doesn’t really start to articulate very well until about 50% volume so this little box really helps to open it up at usable bedroom levels. There doesn’t seem to be any tone loss. For the price and quality you can’t beat it.

Lowers the volume of your tube tube amp while it maintains the tone and response. Must have if you need to play your loud tube amp at low volume.

...it sucks your tone. I play a 50 watt tube amp and with that much power it really does sound best if the amp is cranked to get the best tone. But anything past 50% volume and the walls are shaking. So instead of spending hundreds of dollars on a proper attenuater this seemed like a no brainer. What this box does is attenuates the pre-amp section so it’s not hitting the power section as hard therefore quieting the whole amp. But by attenuating the signal so early, everything that comes after won’t sound as rich. The resulting sound is a little muddy with almost no dynamics. A proper attenuater soaks up the wattage coming from the output transformer before it hits the speaker thereby letting the entire signal develop before it gets to the speaker.I found that the sound wasn’t as bad when playing alone (I mean, come on, who doesn’t sound better when no one’s listening?). But once I was mixed in with the full band, the full dynamic range of the combined instruments made my sound invisible. For the price it’s not a waste of money. And JHS does make high quality stuff. Even though it’s not a pedal that’ll get much use, I’ll likely never get rid of it because my pedal does have a sticker on that states, “This pedal is special. We made it in our homes during the COVID-19 shutdown of 2020.” So there’s that.I do recommend it if you want to play in an apartment or somewhere that isn’t cool with ear splitting guitar noise and you’re on a budget, but ditch it for playing with a band.

"Worth the price for the quality."

I could have built a passive effects loop attenuator for about $20 less, however, this would be with an unpainted, low-quality enclosure. The box is flawless, the potentiometer is very smooth, etc. Based on how cranked my amp's volume and gain are the first 20% of the pot is the max i can go on full settings. If the volume/gain are at noon for example, the JHS Little Black Amp Box is about as exact ast you can get for volume increase/decrease (1/4 is about 1/4 volume, 1/2 is 1/2, etc all the way up to 100% / 100%). Overall, knowing what I could build for the cost, it was only a few dollars more for a top-quality unit and it's well worth it. The painted enclosure has a very nice feel and finish to it with no "bubbling" like you see on some budget units. This was my first JHS "pedal" but if they put this kind of care into all their pedals I will be seeking a few more from them.

"If you have a larger watt tube amp with an effects loop, you can't afford to NOT have this."

While it's the most basic of products (two jacks and a knob, no power needed), it unlocks a lot of functionality within any tube amp with an effects loop. I bought this to pair with a PRS Sonzera 20. I had been struggling with finding a usable volume/tone for the gain channel. It did the trick perfectly. It allowed me to balance the volumes between the two channels without one or the other being way too loud. At $45.00, I think it's a worthwhile investment for any player that uses a tube amp with an effects loop. I'm a fan of JHS products and the simplicity of this product is pure genius.
