This is one bad ass bass! certainly tuned for metal, but really can handle any and all genres of music the tonality of this bass is more like the higher end premium basses like the 2600 Ibanez and even into the prestige Ibanez basses. truly worth more than the price point offered. the only "gripe" I have with the bass is that the head stock is simply flat black painted over a plastic laminate with the typical stock sdgr label that is a high gloss label. if you know anything about flat paints, they require a rougher surface than normal paint at which the paint was already flaking off upon delivery.im not really looking for showmanship at this price point and accepted the fact that Ibanez has some learning to do about spraying flat paints on shiny surfaces. the enlarged nut on the bass is a bit off color and gray as opposed to black overall this bass really hits where you need it and I love the epoxy/paper fretboard of ebanol which delivers the goods. I will most certainly replace all the electronics with emg's when stock electronics fail

Got this one about 3 months ago. It's my first 5 string, but my 5th bass over all. And my 3rd Soundgear. Yeah this thing kicks ass!! The matte finish is awesome. Makes for a fast neck. Love the multi-scaling! The active electronics with the Bartolini pick-ups make this thing a Beast! It looks bad ass too! I haven't even sent this one to the Luthier yet. Plays pretty damn good straight outta the box. Tuned it. Checked the intonation, and started playing it. Gonna stick some DH Black Beauties on her soon. Black strings will make this thing pop!

I call it my "Vader" Bass and love the playability sand tonal aspects. I play a wide range of music and this bass covers them all! If you are unable to find your tone or cut through the mix, then you are doing it wrong. I love the bypass pre amp option to allow my JHS "Colorbox" v2 to shine without muddying up or over driving the signal. Like another reviewer, I too was displeased at the flat paint over shiny SDGR Head stock laminate. Mine too had already flaked off upon receiving the bass... come on Ibanez... you should have known better. Love the bass and great tone. Love the Ebinol fretboard and multi scale fret/bridge system. Love it Love it Love it! One more smalll gripe. The Volume and Tone knobs are dimpled and painted with WHITE DOT! Kind of shot down the flat black on black idea. I have painted the dot black and moved on... I too will be replacing the Stock Ibanez electronics with Dual/Single Soapbar EMG's ASAP!

"Definitely not just a "Metal" bass"

Just got it a few days ago and ripped about 20 hours on it, sounds is great, tight and punchy perfect balance tone wise, I've thrown anything and everything I could think of, from light rock to death metal and this has not hick-upped yet. The multi-scaling is great and keeps the tension and tone perfectly, even on down tuning. The finish for me has been flawless, typical complaint on logo, why paint over it?, volume pot was a little scratchy at first but worked itself out, and the string nut face is sharp especially on the high side, (G-string) needs a little cleaning up. Otherwise great bass and will rock out. Highly recommend
