So after having an rg8 for a few years, I decided to go to the next step and buy an rg9. One thing for sure is that it is a million times better quality than the rg8. It may take some time adjusting your amp settings to accommodate, as you are in fact trying to find a tone that is both suitable for a 5 string bass essentially and a guitar. But, once you figure it out, you sound earth shattering. Amazing for Meshuggah-esque riffs.

This is a million times better than the rg8 model both in build quality and electronics quality. I'm currently using it as a part of my bass rig, and on all pickup configurations running through a bass amp, you get a bass vi style tone, but with an even lower register! Through a regular amp it can be a little work dialing in a tone, especially considering the first string (low c#) is a monster to maintain. But once you're dialed in, this thing speaks for itself! As a bass, this thing works great, and can be used for really any style of music; with a chorus pedal, you can get that Cure clean tone easy! As a guitar, obviously you can get any style of metal you want out of this, which is perfect for what I utilize it for. This guitar opens up endless possibilities, whether it be the way you tune it, utilize it as a whole, and or how you set up your guitar/bass rig. The neck is super thin too! Ironically, this thing is lighter than its rg8 counterpart! Overall this is a great instrument at a great price, just keep in mind that dialing a tone will take some time.

At first, I didn't know if I was going to be able to handle a 9 string as I was stepping up from a 7 string. But it turns out with a few hours with it, I was playing all my 6 string and 7 string songs with ease. You may take a few days to develop the strength in your fretting hand (you are playing a surf board) But it's totally worth it! The stock pickups are actually half way decent too!

This is the mid level offering that Ibanez offers in the 9 String market and it is wonderful. The sound of the guitar is straight forward and warm. The pickups are evenly matched to the wood choices and the 5 way selector gives you plenty of tone options. The extended range of this guitar makes writing and playing long flowing scales and runs effortless. After a month of playing out in public I have become so comfortable playing that I may give up six string guitars. Probably not but this instrument has made me a believer in extended range baritone guitars. Tonaly solid, beautifully made, and lightweight this is the best guitar for introducing yourself or another to extended range guitars.
