"Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap"
This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
I'm a bass player primarily, and I've been playing my GAX30 in a couple of bands for the last two years. And the fact that I haven't broken it yet is testament in itself. I'm considering a replacement at the moment, but it looks like I'm going to need to spend a whole lot more than the £100 I paid for this to get anything comparable.
This guitar knows what it is: a cheap, simple instrument for beginners and players who either want to add something different to their tonal palette without breaking the bank, or people who want a backup for something more expensive. If you're in any of these categories, this requires serious attention.
Sound
Extremely good pickups for the money. When played clean the the neck pickup on its own sound can be a little muddy, but there's an unexpectedly nice jangle from the bridge pickup, and it sings with a mix of both humbuckers. There's some nice bluesy honk possible if you raise the gain a bit, and when you pile it on you can get some convincing metal and heavy rock tones. Generally I use it with a lot of gain and pickups, can give you everything from an abrasive growl to singing leads. Basically anything an SG can do, this'll have an admirable crack at. Versatile, and belies its price.
Features
No frills, simple electronics in the Gibson mould. The wood used is of a good quality, especially in the fretboard, and although the pickups might be a little underpowered, they do the job well. The one issue I have is with the tuners- they a little flimsy and aren't particularly stable, and chances are these'll be the first thing to go as the guitar gets on a bit. One tone pot and one volume controlling two humbuckers doesn't give a lot of options, but what's here does its job.
Ease of Use
This guitar works well. It's lightweight thanks to its basswood body, has a well-worked neck that fits the hand nicely It's very difficult to put down once you pick it up, and in terms of tone and playability it can easily sit with far more expensive guitars. The setup was near-perfect straight out of the box, the electronics and wiring showed good attention to detail, and after a minor setup it played at least as well as any budget guitar I've used. It might take a little work getting the tone you want from the spartan electronics, but you'll enjoy experimenting, and you'll love it when you've got it.
Quality
Aside from the aforementioned tuners this guitar is pretty much unfaultable on quality. The finish is even and well-applied, the wiring is of a high standard and even the screws and fittings seem to be of a good quality. I've played three of these guitars, including my own, and the standard of all three has been identical. As regards quality control Ibanez have done brilliantly here. And it can take a bit of a kicking. At least mine has, with no problems other than a knob falling off, which seems to happen to all my instruments.
It might be a bit naff, but I really like the truss rod cover on these guitars. It's screwed on to the top of the neck and has a little folding plate that provides both security and ease of access, and this level of attention to the little things is what makes this guitar stand out in its field.
Value
Compared to the competition? No contest. If you have about £120 to spend on a guitar, you're doing yourself a great disservice if you don't give this a look. And if my experience of Ibanez's quality control is to be believed, any example you play should be damn near the same as the one you buy. Which you will.
Manufacturer Support
No issues so far, so I haven't had any experience with this.
The Wow Factor
Aside from the weird thing I have for the truss rod cover, I actually prefer the look of the thing to most other guitar shapes, certainly most of the budget ones, which tend to slightly mangled, sharper versions of the classics. The same charge could be levelled here, but I think the combination of SG and Les Paul traits have been melded well. The whole package strikes me as tasteful in a 'less is more' kind of way. And if you hear one of these played well, with a good setup, you'll want it even more.

"A good start to your rock and roll fantasy."
Well this guitar is my secondary guitar that i leave in Drop C or D whatever, because i came to purchase a vintage Kramer Voyager in a local pawnshop which needs some work but is superior to this guitar in my opinion.
Sound
My impression of the sound could be off because i transitioned from playing a fender bass guitar, and never had enough money to purchase a guitar amp, although many people at various shops have told me it's not a big deal. All and all, I think it has pretty good kick for a low end guitar.
Features
The only issue that struck me with this guitar is how horrible the tuners are. They'll lock in pretty good at first but now precise tuning is a nightmare they slip and slide all over the place making detuning for a more metal sound take an hour. Eventually i'll probbley have to toss new tuners in it.
Ease of Use
Well it doesn't get much easier then this guitar, the tone and volume knobs in obvious locations, and the pickup switch is easy enough to use but doesn't do a whole lot tone wise unless you really crank it. I use a multi-effect with it to get different sounds, and i enjoy it overall play-wise, My only real issue is the cord plug-in area isn't very convenient if you sit while playing often compared to other guitars.
Quality
Mine has never been dropped or anything of the sort but it goes back and forth to guitar club at school every wednesday with reletive ease in a soft case, and i've not noticed any real issues with it, and when it's not out and about I keep it on a regular stand, and keep the pickups clean it sounds great. The only bad thing again is the tuner quality.
Value
Well i must say for the price it was good, i've not played many low end guitars but this one has a few minor flaws that really shouldn't get in the way of your purchase, i've been happy with it for a year, it even convinced me to stop playing bass guitar.
Manufacturer Support
I've never contacted them in the past year or more that i've had the guitar so it's not been an issue.
The Wow Factor
It's got a pretty fat body on it compared to other guitars giving it a sexy tone. That's what set it apart from some other guitars i jammed on in the shop that were low end. I purchased the red one beacuse it has a really cool see through finish and thin paintcoat.

"Great Guitar for Any Beginner!"
Verified Purchaser
zZounds has verified that this reviewer purchased this specific product from us.
Now, this is a great guitar, and i would recomended to any beginner who is SERIOUS about learning and playing the guitar. cuz if you're not serious and your mommy bought it for you so you would shut the hell up, then go buy a yamaha at walmart. OK, when i know alot more on guitars and want that edge and better sound, ofcourse i am going to buy a different guitar, maybe a BC Rich, but those are ALOT of money. if some one stole this guitar, i would hunt them down, beat the crap out of them with my guitar and take their money, and get a better guitar :)
Sound
this is my first guitar and i love the sound of it. it's great for classic rock/metal. if you have own other guitars then i dont think you should buy this cuz it was built (i believe) fro beginners.
Features
this guitar doesn't really have features except for the pitch and pick up selector (but those don't really count, do they?) but the material is so light weight, which makes it very comfortable to play sitting or standing.
Quality
this product is made very well, didn't pay for any shipping (which was awsome) and there is nothing wrong with it. very sturdy, you could probably through it at the wall a few times and it would be fine (i'm not ganna try it though...) and agina, it's so light!
Value
this was an awsome deal. every other guitar either was good and too much, or sucked ass and affordable (like all things in life) but this guitar was right in my price range, and still had enough to get an amp.
Manufacturer Support
wouldn't know, havn't had any problems with this guitar, so i've never had to call them.
The Wow Factor
when i saw this guitar, i really really wanted it, when i got it, it was as awsome as it looked online (i think its cuz the online one is polished and stuff) but it still looks really cool. and when i pick it up i want to just play for hourse, but the thing is, i don't sound like Eddy Van Halen.....yet.

Sound
This guitar sounds pretty good, the tone switch dosent make much difference. thats about all that i dont like. i can play pink floyd, ac/dc, and greenday songs pretty good and thats all i really play so i like it

Ease of Use
its really simple and easy to use
Quality

"Perfect for the beginner guitarist."
this is good for beginners, but only for beginners
Sound
The sound is perfect for beginners.
Features
To be honest, i bought this cause i liked the sg body. i was disappointed when i got this.
Ease of Use
This guitar is light and great for someone who has had up to two years of experience.
Quality
This is alright, but it might be because i am not a beginner anymore.
Value
This is a great price for a guitar this level. although, you do get what you paid for, so only use this for beginning the coureer.
Manufacturer Support
never had to.
The Wow Factor
this looks ok, but it doesn't make you head over heels obsessed with it. people usually go for epiphone or squier for a beginner one of those.

"Insane!"
At least a few months but it turned out that the guitar was so great that I upgraded it and turned it into my main axe.
Sound
I think the sound is great but when you play it at high volumes the pickups sound a little messed up or mushy. So i solved this problem by just buying new pickups.
Features
I really like the overall feel of this guitar. The thing i don't like is that it doesn't have a killswitch. Thats just me if you don't need one great.
Ease of Use
A really easy guitar to adjust to your liking.
Quality
It;s very well made. I had to re-solder the wires and get new pots and stuff after about i'd say almost 75% of the first year ive had it.
Value
I think its so worth much more than its selling for.
The Wow Factor
The finish is just extreme. You can get it in many different colours and if you don't like the scratch plate take it off like I did.

"Sex on a Mahogany Stick"
This guitar will certainly do me for a while at least until my ability improves or my bank account becomes fat.
Sound
It sounds pretty good, I would suggest getting an amp that is better than the Ibanez 10 amp practice one that the package came with (tends to have a lot of hum and buzz). Get some good strings and it improves the whole thing up a notch. Not bad with jazz but far better with rock.
Features
Amp is ordinary in the starter package....needs a Wammy bar apart from that it's a pretty basic guitar.
Quality
Whilst everything is supposedly chrome it does have a cheapish look to it on close inspection. Tuning keys are plastic and potentially a weak point. The bridge is a bit ordinary could be better qulaity. Overall quality is pretty good. The Red is best look. Wouldn't take it on the road.
Value
Great Value...seems better than any other low end brands like Squier.
Manufacturer Support
So far no dealing with either the reatiler or manufacturer.

"Ibanez, the Company of Many Faults"
Basically my guitar broke out of the box. Then to my displeasure i found out that the screws and parts i need to fix it are no longer available. 6 months after they sell it to me they don't have the parts, bull. Ibanez should start manufacturing corn, cause they don't have a clue with guitars.
Sound
To put it simply I've come to find that Ibanez is an undependable guitar company. I've had, and many other of my guitar buddies have come to find that the hardware of the guitars is junk. My fret boards were off the day I bought it, cause I found out later that the humbuckers were broken, then some screws in the bridge came off...
Features
Sure.
Quality
Horrible hardware. Didn't even last out of the box. A month after having it i couldn't use it.
Value
Ibanez has a good price range, but i'd never buy from them again.
Manufacturer Support
Ibanez is the worst guitar manufacturer ever. If your strapped on cash for heaven's sake stick witht the squiers and epiphones.
The Wow Factor
I was disappointed in the appearance of it. Pictures over the internet are deceptive. It's really light which is a plus for hardcore live preformances. "The feel" is okay but doesn't feel as natural or comfortable as other guitars i've owned.
Musical Style:
Alternative, emo, core, instage,
