"Excellent Les Paul"

First thing I have to say is when I opened it I went over it with a fine tooth comb because I've heard so many nightmare stories about Gibson quality control over the past decade. My guitar was impeccable. Not a single issue whatsoever, as it should be for what they cost now. This guitar comes with the 490r and 490t pickups. These are fine if you play blues, jazz, or classic rock. If you want to play hard rock or metal you may want to look into replacement pickups. The 490r is very warm and thick. It sounds great for clean arpeggios and overdriven soloing, but it can sound downright muddy playing chords with any overdrive on it. Even with the pickup heights adjusted it was a little louder than the 490t bridge pickup. Now the 490t doesn't sound too bad. It's a pretty clear, but doesn't have a whole lot of output. Stick an overdrive in front of a dirty amp and it will sing, but it won't have the compressed singing quality on it's own. That can be good or bad depending on what you need. I played around with them for a couple weeks before deciding to replace them with Seymour Duncans (JB and Jazz). The Jazz has a lot more clarity in the neck than the 490r and it still has warmth to it. The JB just sings and still cleans up with the volume knob despite being high output. They're the go to aftermarket pickups as far as I'm concerned. If it had shipped with a 498t in the bridge I might not have been so quick to swap the pickups out. I love the fact that this has a maple neck. Maple is a lot sturdier than mahogany plus the Les Paul Customs in the 70s had maple necks. That's really the main reason I jumped for this rather than a Studio. No it doesn't have the binding like the Classic, Traditional, or Standard LPs, but I'm used to the no frills construction of my faded SG. It doesn't bother me. It has a simple beauty to it. My guitar is the tobacco burst and I really like how the neck, top, and back all have different colors. You get what you pay for, but it's not as good a value as it was a couple years ago. Replace the 490t with a 498t and drop the price (yeah right) back down a bit and I'd give it a 5/5. As it is it is a solid 4/5. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if you're in the market for a Les Paul.

This is an excellent guitar. Plays amazingly and sounds great. To get an American made, super high quality guitar at this price is fantastic. The step up from Epiphones and MIM Fenders is huge. I am not picking on those either- my Player Series Strat is a workhorse that delivers across the board. But you put this Les Paul in your hands and it is just better. I'm sure the jump to the Standard series increases the quality of woods used, the ABR bridge instead of Nashville, Burstbuckers, etc., but not sure it can make enough of a difference to double the price. This is simply a great guitar. $1,300 isn't cheap by any means but definitely feel the quality and value will be hard to beat.

This is my fourth Gibson product, I currently own a '16 SG, an SG Tribute, a '12 Les Paul Studio and now this. With the exception of a dry fretboard, it arrived in flawless condition. I always take new guitars in to my local guy for a pro set-up. After doing so, this quickly became my favourite player. The 490's clean up much better than my other Gibson pickups, but playing with dirt, the 490T isn't nearly as harsh as the Studio's 498. The neck has a thick, comfortable feel. And I can't say enough about the satin (tobacco burst) finish. It feels and plays beautifully, and the exposed maple cap gives the appearance of natural binding around the body's edge. Also, I'm very impressed with the included soft case. I would take it anywhere. For less than half the price of a Les Paul Standard, this is truly a no-brainer. After playing mine, my guitar tech ordered a Tobacco Burst for himself.

This guitar is beautiful. This guitar has basically all the parts of a standard LP at a more affordable price although I believe these LP's are overpriced.Plays well out of the box and I was super impressed by the case. Although it states it comes with a gig bag, the case is basically a hard case inside of a gig bag. I am super happy with this purchase, and as always with zZounds, shipping was fast efficient and on time...

I have ordered many great guitars from zZounds, when I had the ability to get my first gibson from zZounds I didn't hesitate to get this awesome guitar! The tribute is a beast with great all around tone, I play the blues to hard rock and this guitar rocks all those genres! The fingerboard lets me guide over it effortlessly as I play lead guitar, I like to beat up my strings, yet even then the tribute stays in tune very well, do not let the tribute name fool you, this guitar is a gibson through and through!

I played Gibsons for several years, and then I played other guitars - superstrats, mostly - to see if I could find a guitar that had a tremolo bar, and was maybe a little lighter. I never had any issues with Gibson tone.I played a bunch of great guitars that weren't Gibson, and a lot of them were lighter, and had tremolo bars, and sounded great. But none of them sounded THAT great. I had forgotten the tone I was looking for, and I was a little lost, and then I saw these Tributes and read some reviews, and I bought one. This guitar - the cheap one! - has reminded me of what I was looking for, before I got lost in non-tone-related specs: beautiful tone. The 490 in the neck is everything I've ever wanted from a clean pickup. It actually sounds sweeter than it did in the Studios I used to own. The 490 in the bridge doesn't get quite as heavy as the 498 in my Studios did, but it's not an issue. These pickups take gain brilliantly. After playing a whole lot of guitars, I no longer care very much about weight and such. As far as a tremolo bar goes, I'm probably gonna get a no-mod Les Paul tremolo system, like a Duesenberg, to take care of that...because this is the tone that I was looking for, and I don't think that guitars with holes in them can get that tone (and I played a lot of guitars to figure that out).I gave the guitar 4 1/2 stars for Features simply because this is not a feature-laden guitar. That's actually one of the reasons I bought it. The person who built it did not have too many things to do, and s/he did a brilliant job putting together a relatively simple electric guitar.I'm very glad I bought this guitar. It reminded me of what I was looking (or listening) for when I play - the tone, the feeling of the guitar as you play it. For the price, I think it's amazing. I'm gonna get another Studio, too. And maybe put a Duesenberg on that, too...

Let’s be honest, some of these reviews I read make me wonder if someone was paid to write them. This one. An honest review, no one asked me to write. I’ve been playing for about 22 years and own several other American made guitars, including an SG. For some reason I can not fathom, I’ve always thought the Les Paul was not for me and wow let me just tell you I firmly stand corrected. I actually prefer a satin finish to a gloss finish so this beauty is perfect for me. I love my SG but never realized how unbalanced it is until now. This thing rests beautifully in a strap in a perfect neutral balance, plugged in on my lap is a bit different as the thigh cut is further forward on the guitar, but not a problem at all, just different than anything I’ve ever owned. I love the punch of these pick ups. The action out of the box was absolutely perfect. Fast neck. Beautiful aesthetics. The guitar comes with a picture of itself on the work bench during check off which really gives it a personal feel, letting you know, time was spent crafting your new favorite guitar. This is solely my opinion but, I would rather own a lesser expensive American made guitar over a high end foreign guitar hands down. It’s absolutely worth the extra $$ if you’re trying to decide. Also the “soft” case is way sturdier than I ever imagined it being also extremely good looking. I’m extremely excited to have this guitar.

I have been looking at the Les Paul Tributes for quite some time. None of the music stores near me had any for me try out, so I was apprehensive about purchasing one without playing one. Usually, it seems, when a company cuts corners to make an item cost effective, those corners are pretty important ones. But, I can honestly say this is a quality made guitar. I was absolutely amazed at the feel and playability right out of the box.I manage a big box store and we don't carry Gibson guitars. We do have Epiphone guitars and the quality on some of those has been getting better and better with each one we receive, but this actual Gibson Les Paul Tribute feels and plays different. The quality of wood used on the instrument is even higher. Now to the guitar.I purchased the Satin Tobacco one. As soon as I unboxed it and pulled the gig bag out I was floored. The quality of the gig bag is better than some cases I have received with other guitars. As the specs state, the guitar has a maple neck with rosewood fingerboard. I have been a strat and tele guy for 20 years, so the maple neck feels great. I have never owned a Les Paul before but I have owned 2 other Gibson guitars, many years ago. The 24 3/4" scale length felt like putting on an old familiar shoe you haven't seen in awhile. The body shape is Les Paul of course. Anyone who has played or owned a Les Paul knows how that feels. The weight relief is nice. The last actual Les Paul I spent any amount of time with was a 1991 Les Paul Custom, and that was 30 years ago. This guitar does not really feel like that guitar play-wise. But, in my opinion and experience, this guitar is equally as good in it's own way. This guitar is a no frills guitar. There is no binding on the body or neck, which again coming from strats and teles is not a problem for me, there is no coil tapping in the electronics, again if I need single coil sounds, I have strats and teles for that. The pickups have a "vintage" characteristic to them. Others have mentioned a lack of high gain qualities to the pickups, but I don't play high gain distortion anyway, so that vintage Les Paul growl is what I was going for.I really do like and enjoy this guitar. So far, the only thing that should have been caught before leaving the factory is the pickup selector switch. It feels cheap and one side doesn't lock in as well as the other side and this will have to be replaced after some use. But, if that is the only thing I can find wrong at the moment, then good. Because everything else about the guitar has blown me away.

I got the vintage looking Tobacco Burst and it is gorgeous. I couldn't find the "blem", but thanks for the $200 discount. I prefer lower output vintage sounding pickups, which is why I chose the 490 equipped Tribute over the hotter 498/490 Studio. I love everything about it.

Mine was perfect right out-of-the-box. It actually has some beautiful flame on the body and the neck! Frets were perfect, nut was perfect. And I bought a blemished one.Not a scratch not a flaw! It came to me on time. The sound is great the sustain is phenomenal for a tribute. Very very very happy! And zZounds is great. I opted for the six payments. It's nice to break it up into payments instead of taking a chunk of money at one time ! will definitely buy from zZounds again !

Congratulations to Gibson - the quality is back! My guitar got here 3 days ago and I still can’t stop playing it! I have been without a Les Paul for years. The last one was an R8, but I had to sell it after health issues left me unable to work. I have been wanting to get one again but the Standards and such are out of my reach. I have been looking at some Tributes that are for sale locally, and I like the look, so thanks to zZounds easy payment plan I was able to get a Tribute in Heritage Cherry sunburst.I was afraid that I was settling for the Tribute when I really wanted a higher end LP, but the moment I took it out of the case I was floored. This is a real Les Paul that looks, feels, plays, and sounds great! This guitar takes me all the way back to the ‘70s Les Pauls I grew up playing. I’m more than happy with my purchase.

I've been playing for a year, and have a few Epiphones. I've been wanting a Gibson forever...even before I could play, I loved the looks of them. So this past Wednesday I decided to pull the plug and get a Tribute. Not a fan of the Modern Lite, and with the Tribute being discontinued, I figured my chances at an affordable Gibson Les Paul were fading away. zZounds still had them in stock, so I placed an order, last Wednesday, for a tobacco burst Tribute, which was my first purchase with zZounds. Not being able to see or hold the guitar before clicking add to cart, made me a bit nervous, but that was all for naught. Two days later my new guitar arrived, safe, sound and on one piece! zZounds shipped the guitar with the strings loose, which I'm sure helps prevent headstock breaks during shipping. The guitar is flawless, looks and feels great. I gave it a tune and started playing it.....it plays and feels awesome. I love my Epi's but this Tribute stands above them, no doubt. If you too are on the fence, stop waiting, get your Tribute before they are gone.

I've only owned 3 Gibson Les Pauls, but so far this has been the best one yet. It quickly became my number #1 guitar, competing with the Fender American Special that I got from zZounds. I play through a Marshall and always cuts through the mix pretty well. Weight is close to 9 pounds so its not light but its not heavy like a 70's Les Paul. I have it in satin honey burst but I had to have the poker chip put on. To me a Les Paul does not look right without the poker chip. Its a visual thing for me. Sound wise, smooth neck, straight up feel, you can't beat this guitar.

Purchased the Tribute several months ago and decided it was a keeper. Right out of the box the first thing(s) you see are the fit and finish of a real Gibson. Action and intonation were spot on. Again; right out of the box. The modern weight relief adds t it's charm because if you've every stood for hours at a time with any guitar around your neck you appreciate the little things like weight relief even more. The 490 Pup's installed are again truly Gibson. People have stated that it can't be the real deal Les Paul because of the maple neck. My response is that if you check Gibson used maple necks on many of the LPs produced from circa 1975 to 1979. So that blows that argument out of the water. It's pure Gibson through and through. The fit and feel of the most iconic electric guitar in history is second to none. You get to test drive one for 45 days with zZounds so there's no risk and the reward (at least for me) is many fold. Try it......you won't be disappointed.

I have been a working musician for over half of my life and have owned numerous guitars, probably pushing 300+ and have had many that I've let go of only to kick myself in the rear for doing so. I recently decided to give a LP Tribute a chance. I don't know about others that have been built in this series, but I feel like this one has been given the OG Gibson love like the builds of the 1990's and before. It literally feels like an old guitar. It plays like an old guitar and it sounds like an old guitar. And don't think by me using the term "old" that I'm being negative about it. On the contrary!! This thing slays and I can't believe I'm even saying that about a modern day Gibson. Upon getting it home I changed strings to Elixer Nanoweb 10-46 and pulled the pickups out and removed the metal covers. Completely opened up the sound of this guitar. I really want to pull out the pcb and put in a wiring harness but it sounds killer now and I HATE the pcb design so I can't believe I'm even praising it. The intonation is perfect and it has the most utmost minimal fret buzz only because I set my guitars up lower than most without the strings becoming spanky sounding. Sustain for days, just as in Spinal Tap. I play everything from Classic Rock to the heaviest of Doom Metal and it's perfect for all of it.Get on the snake. You'll never get off.

Growing up, I learned guitar on relatively cheap guitars. I took up guitar again in my late 40's and decided that I was a grown man with a job and I wanted a nice guitar. My conscience as a family man would not allow me to pay for a full price Les Paul Traditional or the like. This was a nice compromise: a stripped down Les Paul that was a legitimate American made take on the model. I love it.It is by far the easiest guitar I have ever played and has clearly made me a better guitar player in the year I have owned it. I read complaints about the pickups, but I love the way this guitar sounds. It is definatley more chimey than I expected and the separate tone and volume controls allow me to shape the guitar for a variety of sounds.I am tempted to buy another guitar, but I cannot imagine that I would want to play something else more than this. I am thinking about installing a Bigsby, but other than that I would not change a thing.

By far the best sounding guitar I ever played, yes this is my first Gibson guitar. I have played many guitars but this one has a great clear sound and a long sustain. The tuning knobs/key are very smooth and tuning is a breeze. Out of the box I had to do a few adjustments to the neck and bridge to get neck straight and the string height to my liking. I had to condition the fret board, it was very dry, took to coats. I check the intonation and it was spot on. Thanks for allowing me to make 18 payments for this beauty!!

"Amazing Les Paul sound on a budget"

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
I've played several Gibson Les Paul guitars ranging from studio to custom shop and in my opinion the Tribute is by far the best bang for the buck, classic Gibson sound and playability without the fancy paint jobs and binding of the higher end models, but don't let that discourage you because the finish on this guitar is absolutely beautiful in honeyburst and has the classic Les Paul look, the guitar comes with a really nice "bag" that is more like a case and very durable, my only complaint with this guitar is that the sides of the fret board were extremely rough (almost splintery) and the fret board itself was extremely dry, I was expecting a Little more quality out of Gibson brand new but it was a quick fix that my local guitar shop was able to do during the set up for an additional $10All in all the Gibson Les Paul tribute is an amazing guitar for the value and it would have gotten a solid 5 stars if it weren't for the rough fret board, but even with the fret board issues i'd still buy this guitar again and highly recommend it if you want a real Les Paul tone on a budget.
Sound
The sound quality is amazing and on par with any high end Gibson, the pickups sound amazing and I don't intend to change them.

Just got mine today and what a nice Les Paul for the price! I have wanted one for a long time but thanks to zZounds.com was able to get one. Sounds great though my Fender Blues deluxe and my Spider 5 amps. That's a huge plus because some days im in the mood for Blues and some rock/metal so versatility is great!!

So this was my 4th Les Paul Tribute! The first 3 were nightmares! I gave zZounds one more try being that I wasn’t paying for the returns, Gibson QC is out to lunch again! That’s if they ever came back...shame how bad the 1st 3 I received wrapped pickup rings, volume pots that don’t work , stop not screwed into body , black marks under satin finish and razor blade frets this last one was on the money but I made zZounds check it before it was sent and the 3rd one I got was returned by someone before me how I know this is because the poker chip was already on the guitar and Gibson doesn’t install poker chips on Tributes. The stars I am giving are for the good one I got and ZERO for the other 3 before this one !!!!

I played drums most of my life but always wanted to learn guitar. Now retired, always busy, and not much money I thought a Les Paul would always be to pricey. But Gibson’s new lower price and zZounds great credit plan allowed me to purchase the best, for less.I have not needed Gibson support, so I have nothing to enter for “support.”

My first two, a goldtop and a honeyburst, were flawless. Played perfectly after a minimum of setup. I love the non bound neck, and the 490s. The 490/498 combo was my fav back in the 90s. But his last one, an Ice Tea Burst had a lot of issues and Gibson CS was worthless. I've been promised new pickup rings (they are bowed) three times and am always told "they're on the way out". That was a year ago. No dice. I payed out of pocket to fix the frets and board after taking a stab at it myself. I usually do all my own work but this one was out of my wheelhouse it was so bad.I know ... I shoulda sent it back. That's on me. But my experience echos that of many others lately. Gibson just no longer cares. This will be my last new one. They'll never get money from me again.

I’ve been playing guitar, my whole life and I’m 51. I’ve had Gibsons ever since I was a teenager and honestly his tribute is one of my absolute favorites. I love the satin finish. I love the Plex frets it’s light and not a boat anchor it does everything it supposed to and then some. The satin finish is by far my favorite as I don’t see finger prints just from looking at it and the price is just right. The payment plan is stellar and I’ve used it since 2007 in mine or my wife’s name. I’ve got a beautiful SG Standard. It’s almost paid off and I honestly prefer this Les Paul. How can you go wrong with this and the interest free payment is a huge incentive.

I really wanted to give Gibson another chance with my business. I own a couple of Epiphones that exceed my expectations, so I thought why not? I just received my Les Paul Tribute Honey Burst from Zzounds and I’m quite underwhelmed. The guitar itself is beautiful from a distance until you take a closer look and play it. Here’s what’s wrong out of the box: The pickup rings are bowed at the top and bottom and look like a smiley face(s), the “n” on the Gibson logo has a tiny smear in the paint that’s noticeable when held up, the most egregious is the sharp edge between the neck and fretboard from the 3rd to the 8th fret – on the top side. I can easily catch my fingernail on the ridge – how does this make it out the door in Tennessee? I have 8 other electric guitars (from 800-3K in price), and none have this issue. Look I get this is the “entry level” Gibson but I’ll bet you will never find these types of flaws on the equivalently priced PRS. My Epiphone 1959 Les Paul had way better quality control. I may reach out to Gibson or zZounds but certainly wanted the potential buyer to be aware.

"Read ALL the reviews FIRST."

I've sent a Les Paul Tribute back. Why? Several screw-ups, and they are big, obvious ones, indicative of total indifference, maybe even arrogance. Also, these are apparently not unique to the example I received, so read ALL the reviews. I understand there are lots of positive ones and all the videos are positive without exception, which makes me want to rethink the credibility of the YouTube channels I watch. So, let's see - the bottom of the pickup rings were flat - not contoured to fit the top, and were unceremoniously forced into place screwed down anyway. As a result they are all bowed out, warped and contorted out of shape and look absolutely ridiculous. I cannot fathom how this alone wasn't caught by somebody, and sent back for correction. But, the fun doesn't stop there; the frets are not even filed or polished and have flat spots and sanding marks making the guitar unplayable. Then, the fingerboard is narrower than the neck and has a lip that runs the entire length of the neck on both the treble and bass sides. It is a supremely f****d up guitar, I can't for the life of me fathom how this piece of firewood got out of the factory. Appalling.

Gigging since childhood (1970), have owned many great guitars.

Musical Style:

I had to send one of these back a while ago, it was like half complete I graded it as low as you can go, the frets were not finished at all with sharp jagged edges all up and down the neck, some of the plastic protective covers were missing, the shop photo was not with the instrument as was not a strap or other bag candy, fret board was parched not just dry, probably why the frets were protruding at the edges, it was obviously not new but I was charged new price, the replacement that came was the same, used but sold as new, I waited a lifetime to own a Gibson and then this.... it is largely why I don't shop with ZZounds anymore. Purchased the Satin Honey with intentions of installing a set of SD Vintage Blues pickups but actually really like the 490s and did not switch. So I had a set of Vintage Blues pickups and a JB and Jazz...so I had to get the Cherry and Iced T!!! Sounds logical right? I am a satin finish guy who cares little about binding and flash on my guitars I like them stripped down and solid with good tone. Out of the box, I did notice a few issues with the finish, not earth shattering, but still should not be there from a company like Gibson. I also noticed the nut needed a little bit of work to help tuning stability, and no poker chip. It's an LP that cost $1300 put the chip on period, even $300 epi come with the poker chip. Just saying. Sound out of the box was great through a blues jr and suits my music exceptionally well. Overall a great guitar for PLAYING not hanging on a wall. The stock pups are great and fairly versatile so had to leave them in the first one, the second got a set of SD Vintage Blues (great setup., if you just want to change pups try this setup), the third got a JB and a Jazz (super setup versatile, loud, clear, great). I just received a set of Pearly Gates for Christmas so maybe the Tobacco needs to show up too. I changed the pickups just to have different tones not because it was needed. These are great guitars (I purchased from ZZOUNDS) and I would not hesitate to take them on any stage as primary guitar. Get it will not be sorry.

This is my second Tribute. I purchased the Cherry burst this time and I have the Honey burst. I love the satin finish on both and they are beautiful...I know they are stripped down but that is what I like. The frets on the new one were a little better than on the honey one but will still require just a little clean up. Set up good out of the box and it sounds like a Gibson. I will be putting a set of SD Vintage Blues in this one (the reason I bought it). These tributes are GREAT instruments and a lot less scary for a gigging musician to carry to shows BUT COME ON GIBSON NO POKER CHIP! There are still a lot of us old guys that like the look of the poker chip. I would rather you have kept the cloth and strap and put in the poker chip as I am sure most would. Les Pauls have a poker chip. If you want a guitar to play not hang on a wall, buy one of these you will not be disappointed. As usual, dealing with zZounds was a great experience and I will buy from them again.

When these were first introduced the quality wasnt quite up to standard. .This guitar however is exceptional compared to the 2019 models ive played and returned ! Gibson is obviously working on the "out the door" quality control . .fret edges are nicely done , nut is graph tech and well done , pick ups are 490's and sound good to me but i like 490's regardless . .( if you think neck is muddy drop pick-up and raise pole piece) . .satin finish is outstanding and also preferred finish . . rock solid guitar , keep in mind you may have to make slight adjustments for relief and string height as with most any other guitar . . these are players , not display queens

I received the package straight out the box it was set up only thing was a dry fretboard this les paul has a satin finish which is cool also the 490 pickups are cool with me now most epiphones are in the same price range or close to it maybe gibson has made a decent affordable les paul that is 1950s reissue and I think this les paul is a great product

You know within 5 minutes if you have the one you are looking for , sometimes it takes a few or perhaps more , but when you know -you know . Gibson has without a doubt upped the quality control on these models from the 2019 rollout . .just a few minor adjustments to neck , string height and fretboard conditioning /strings . . . wonderful playing American made LP

The 2017 Tribute Plus I bought is a Beautiful instrument. Excellent looking axe. Won't for the love of a good set up stay in tune. Most of the Epiphone guitars I have simply put it to shame.. I plan to keep it, however I realize it's going to take a PLEK job to dial the unit in. Still hope, but simply on the back burner for now.

Don't care if it is less than half of what a standard costs, the maple neck and top just isn't the same.Ok with AAA maple top but the neck is more or less what I engage the songs I play with, it's what makes me like or dislike any guitar.Thats just me,I'll pay extra for the standard any day, enjoy your new Les Paul because all of them are special.Thanks.
