Fender FR50 Resonator Customer Review

Overall: 3.5 out of 5 stars

I bought it for my students to use but find myself picking it up often. I don't plan on replacing it.
Sound
I teach guitar and bought this to keep around for student use. The sound quality is not far bellow my national or dobro.
Features
Had to replace the bridge and nut to get better sustain. Adding a pick-up would be nice.
Quality
Decent wood and construction. Hardware could be of better quality (The Spider and cone are okay but the nut and bridge-bone needed to be replaced).
Value
Can't get any better for the money.

"YES, you need this guitar !!"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Sound
Very versatile instrument. Easy to play, nice action that is firm but not too hard. Responds well to alternate tunings and sounds great when using a slide. A good alternate to an electric guitar while still keeping with acoustic tradition.
Quality
No dings or scratches, lets keep it that way.
Value
Great guitar at a very good price. I've paid twice as much for less value.
Manufacturer Support
no problems. ever.

"Set it up with bone and its a slide players dream."

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Plan to keep for a long time.
Sound
Not as load as I would have liked. I replaced the cheapo plastic saddle and nut with bone. Wow what a differance. It sounds much better. Iwill probably replace cone someday. I love the F holes. I am a Fender guy.
Features
Cheapo plastic saddle and nut. replace them with bone and your set.
Quality
Made well enough for slide playing.
The Wow Factor
Just looks cool setting in its stand and even cooler when being played. Love the f holes.

"Not Fender's best offering."

As I mentioned, I didn't buy it for the reasons above. I'm only reporting this because I don't think it's a good buy for the money -- I have nothing against Fender or this retailer at all.
Sound
I usually really like Fender products but this one's not that great. It's an inexpensive resonator guitar, although there are others in the price range that are better constructed and sound much better. Check out a Dean or even a Regal.
Features
Can't comment on features.
Quality
I did not think the guitar I played was of significantly better quality than the Carlo Robelli acoustic I got for free from another retailer's promotion (normally sells for 79.00). The woods are not of great quality, the finish was not really smooth on the neck, and there were string buzzes caused by the spider. Please note that the string buzzing was NOT caused by the action being too low.
Value
I looked at the same model at a store that was selling it significantly lower than at this website, and I passed on it.
Manufacturer Support
I'm sure Fender's support is generally fine.
The Wow Factor
Again, it doesn't look great for the quality reasons I mentioned above.

"I made a mistake and bought this on e-bay hoping that it sounded as good as it looked...it didn't even look as good as it looked"

Overall: 1 out of 5 stars

Sound
The sound is shallow. The buzzing is difficult to eliminate (this is a problem with even high end resonators but with this fender, I can't seem to eliminate the unwanted sounds). Not the sustain or kick that I want in a resonator guitar.
Features
Really crappy tuners. The cone sounds like my Grandma's music box.
Quality
It is nice looking from a distance but of questionable construction. It is especially fragile around the f hole. The finish is sub-par even for a less expensive guitar.
Value
I am going to get rid of this clunker and buy a Regal. If I could I would buy a National, but I played a Regal Duolian the other day and it was seet...about the same price as this one too.
The Wow Factor
Like I said it looks nice from a distance...it just doen't perform that well.

"Pretty good value for the money"

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Sound
Sounds pretty good. Tried a nother resonator guitar that cost double the price, but this one sounded the best.
Features
Mine got a tree bridge - think I want to replace it with a bone one.
