Have always waited for what I thought (to me) was the perfect Telecaster. Being heavy into Strats & LP's over 35 years - I never really gave Tele's a second look. Until now...The advent of this Vintera Series, coupled with this "Modified" subgroup has finally foot the Telecaster bill. After years of suffering with that inadequate Modern C neck that Fender pushes on just about everything - this Soft V (is thicker than the C's!) is the stuff! As implied by the Vintera nameplate - guitar has a great vintagy look, classic Tele appointments, and a really special swag. The edgier pickups are icing on the cake for sure. Only gripe is - considering these guitars have about a 1.5lb weight swing between them - I got one a bit lighter than I would prefer, coming in around the 7-10/7-13 mark weight wise.

Musical Background:

playing 35+ years, mainly hobbyist

Musical Style:

Rock, Blues rock, crossover country

"Outstanding Telecaster!"

I’m a 57 year old hobby guitar player with more guitars than talent! Lately I’ve been getting more into that Telecaster sound. I already own an American Pro Tele. It is excellent in all respects but is definitely a modern feeling guitar. Slim neck is mainly what I mean. So I bought this Vintera 50s Modified hoping for a more authentic vintage Tele experience without the custom shop price. It is outstanding! The soft V neck is super comfortable - very vintage feeling but not too fat by any means. Beautiful satin finish. Beautiful darker tint than my American Pro. The pickups are fabulous! Very vintage sounding with just a bit more oomph. Not “hot” ….. just a bit extra. This is my second Made in Mexico Fender and the build quality is excellent. Basically as good as my American Fenders (I also own an American Special Strat). This MIM Vintera is a finely crafted instrument by any standard. Literally the only thing I notice is different from my 2 USA Fenders is that the fret ends have not been rounded off much. But that is really not a criticism nor does it affect playability. The frets on this guitar are excellent. Well beveled and leveled - just not rounded off at the ends. Frankly, if that kind of thing is important to you some micromesh is all you need. I’m very happy with it as is, and I am not easy to please. As for the S1 switch, it works great although that was not a big selling point for me. I play a Tele for a Tele sound and if I want something that growls more I’ll grab my Gibson - but the S1 definitely works and makes this a very versatile instrument. Yes the S1 switch will give you a solid humbucker tone. I am very happy with this great guitar! I recommend you buy one if you are looking for something with a vintage feel/look/sound, with a little added extra versatility in terms of available tones.

The set-up: This is my second Vintera 50s Modified in the Surf Green. Bought the original run in 2019 (Review "Modified Madness". THRILLED to be able to buy another, as I sold the original (regrettably) last year, and they have been unavailable for the better part of a year since. Received my newest one last week - I was excited to obtain once again the guitar I felt was the perfect all-around Tele; the thicker version of the Soft V was the best neck profile & feel I have ever felt on ANY guitar. However.... much to my dismay, this new run (at least my Vintera) did NOT arrive with that awesome thick Soft V as on my original run. What? Although chunky (a good thing) - NOT the Soft V I fell in love with. Not even close - a chucky "C" all the way. That being said - I was supremely bummed, so much so I requested a return for "not as advertised". Awaiting my return label, and after sitting & stewing over the weekend - with clearer head, I extricated from the box once more. I gave it one final review before committing to the return. I know these Vintera Modifieds may be a thing of the past soon, and I didn't want to take that chance. I decided I could adapt to the big "C", as the balance of these guitars are pretty stellar. I promptly canceled my return arrangement, still mystified that Fender knowingly or unknowingly made this alteration to the neck profile - the biggest selling point to the guitar in my opinion... Just wanted to share that story.

After playing for roughly a week - guitar has settled right in, and feels incredible. Always remember to set it up - string tension a bit on the tight side on this one. Verified weight @ 8#/3oz (so much for guessing) - and can't say enough about these soft V necks!! Sales & delivery process FLAWLESS!!

The gig bag's prettier than the Tele. That neck tho- pretty damn good, if not amazing compared to the nickel frets that would raise the ghost of Robert Johnson: may he rest in peace. The pickguard was warped upward,1/4 inch at the bridge pup and ran flush with the neck pup. The output jack was, dysfunctional in some way, not fastening to the music cable, despite the specs saying it's a 1/4 jack. zZounds has been great tho, thank you guys! They're totally committed to handing you the right guitar
