Fender American Original '60s Jazzmaster Electric Guitar (with Case)

Surf into the past with this period-correct Fender Jazzmaster. The Pure Vintage '65 pickups offer a watery tone and a floating tremolo adds waves of vibrato.

First, the good stuff. Plays fantastic, sounds fantastic, looks fantastic, and is exactly the guitar I was looking for. It sticks pretty close to a reissue but varies in just the right places for better functionality. I wanted one since they were first released and now that I have it, it's as good as I imagined it would be! Now for the could be better. While the setup wasn't horrible and any guitar coming to Arizona is going to need some setup once it settles in, I did run across some things I honestly am disappointed about. The biggest one, the truss rod wasn't even engaged. Took about 2 turns just to snug it and another 1/4 turn to get the relief perfect. I also noticed multiple screws on the pickups that weren't actually in and contacting the pickups. They went in no problem and all is well, but come on, this isn't a cheap guitar we're talking about. The attention to detail doesn't impress me given the price point and made in the USA. Now I also ran into a trem arm that wouldn't actually go into the trem at all. This however is a good story in that one quick call to Zzounds, they offered to change the whole guitar but I preferred we just get a new arm that worked correctly. That had one on the way from Fender the next business day. Great support from Zzounds all around! It shouldn't reflect on Zzounds, but the fact is Fender is letting a lot slip through that really shouldn't. Particularly when you're getting to the top of their non-custom shop range. It's not exactly a reason to not buy it, but do plan on a setup after you let it settle in (which is a good idea anyway). I'm a bit conflicted because it IS a great guitar, you just really shouldn't need to check everything out and finish what Fender should have done before it left the factory. But you do. The major one is the truss rod, as if you're in the right/wrong climate, not having the truss rod engaged is a good way to let it move dramatically and create a real problem if you don't catch it early. Beware! Just for context, the Jazzmaster is now one of 8 Fenders that I own, so I'm definitely no Fender hater in any way (a fanboy maybe)!
