This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
I really enjoy this amp. It sounds much better than what I expected, and it's very straight forward to use. Straight plug and play - no boosts necessary :D
Sound
The EVH 5150 Iconic Combo sounds great. In my opinion, it does what it sets out to do. You can't go into it expecting it to be one of the Stealth Models - it's not that. It is a very straightforward and easy to use amplifier, and it will do pretty much whatever you need it to do.
Features
It's versatility, and the built in noise gate and boost. All high gain amps should have a noise gate built into it in today's day and age.
Ease of Use
It was super easy to get a great sound out of the the EVH 5150 Iconic Combo. I started with everything (except reverb and gate) set to noon, and plugged in and let her rip. I have to do a bit more tweaking with the clean channel, but this thing REALLY shines with the overdrive on. To me (much like the original 5150 from the 90s) that is where money is. The red channel is pretty good too. By itself, the red channel sits between the green channel with overdrive on and the red channel with burn - and tbh I prefer it with the burn button off. Cranking the gain will take away some of your playing dynamics, and on both channels I found that setting it between 11 and 1 'o clock was sufficient.
Quality
The amp appears to be solidly built (I've only had it for four days, so time will tell) It's quite heavy, and looks good. The footswitch was quite a bit smaller than expected, but seems like it's ruggedly built with a long cable.
Value
I think the EVH 5150 Iconic Combo is a great value for the price range it sits in. It would have been better at the $799 price, but hey - inflation is what it is.
The Wow Factor
I mean, it's a 5150 - you are going to get what you pay for. I wish the overdrive on the green channel could be kicked on with a footswitch.

I got this so I can do some recording in my apartment, 1/4 power feature is amazing, this thing responds as if I was at concert volume, speaking of which at full power this thing is loud. The closed back cabinet is nice this thing chugga chuggas great and drives great too. I found the red channel almost to be too much, like in a good way

I wanted a tube amp that would be able to give a variety of deep tone as well as sharp mids and highs. I am not a shredder guitar player but the sound is what my need has been. This amp has it all. It does not depend on a lot of electronic additives to give you what you want, it is all naturally there and more. For a mere 30 watts, it seems like it is producing a savage amount of volume, even when you use the selector for playing it turned down by "half".You can adjust the gain knobs and controls to dial in presence and sustain exactly where you want to be, and if you desire to play with a ton of gain, it has tons for you. The reverb is not all that great but it is a digital onboard reverb on par with others like it so it is exactly what it is supposed to be here.I spent a lot of time researching amps and made this my choice. You cannot beat the price and functions, nothing comes close and regardless of the price, I would have picked this one no matter what. You will love this amp if you buy one. I am amazed how much I love this amp. I would buy one again without any hesitation. Love the color choices, too!

"Good Amp"

This is a good amp, only problem is the delivery service tends to drop them a lot during transport like they did most of my earlier amps including my first 5150 (the delivery man dropped it right in front of my face without an apology, and when I sent it back to zZounds, damned if the pick up driver didn't drop it on my concrete steps) which causes them to sometimes not function properly when delivered. But they drop Marshalls, Mesa Boogies and Fenders too and those customers tend to have the same problems as we do with this one. A broken mishandled amp is a broken mishandled amp no matter the brand name. However, zZounds hurried and replaced it and this one works just fine. I like this amp and love playing through it, and I highly recommend it if you like high quality amps that sound fabulous. The only con is they install the Standby switch in upside down, which is at first confusing and makes one think standby is on when it really isn't. Never had to contact the manufacturer and hope I'll never have to.All in all I'm very happy with it and look forward to spending many more hours getting to know it better.

"Great First Tube"

At the price point, it’s simply unbeatable. It’s my first tube amp and I’m not a rockstar making a lot money so why would I spend more than I have to. The design of the amp is beautiful and it’s very easy to use. People have said it doesn’t chug, well they’re wrong. This thing sounds heavy. People say there’s better choices for the same price, well most of the amps they mention or that I’ve seen for the same price will either require you to spend more on a cabinet or they just aren’t meant for heavy music. If you’re like me, you’re upgrading from a solid state amp, you don’t have a cabinet already and you’re not making much money if any at all from your music, this is the way to go. The only thing I don’t like about it is the unwanted noise but a cheap noise gate will fix that.

"Does What it Sets Out to Do"

Truth be told, I have had several 5150 type amps and have sold them in the end. I'm not a Djent player, but I wind up loving the crunch of the amp and get seduced into buying one. But, once I get it home, it does not hold up. They are designed to do one thing - deliver crazy gain. Eddie was such an incredible genius, but I have a lot of trouble making that kind of gain work. So for me, this amp really only has one sweet spot - the boosted clean channel. The gain of that channel is just right, and sounds like you have a boost pedal in front of it. And the low power setting is quite good. The amp does not lose tone. It just gets lower. I think this is a good club amp. But if you need a good squeaky clean, look elsewhere. The clean is so-so. The tone of this amp is quite similar to the Peavey 5150 which I did like. The red channel is quite over the top. Again, the genius himself could tame that fire. Me, not so much.

I had a Peavey 5150 combo back in the day, and I sold it. Been missing that tone ever since. Saw this and decided to take a chance... totally worth it! No only does this do the original 5150 tones, the cleans are great and the controls allow other tones to be dialed in as well. The 1/4 power switch means I can sit right next to the amp, mess with the knobs and get the sounds at a volume that doesn't hurt. This is honestly the best amp I own. Completely worth it. If I need volume it does get very loud, but for recording or bedroom practice it couldn't be better. The XLR out records wonderfully, no noise and pure tones... so worth it.

I have been looking for an amp that does crisp cleans and articulate distortion, this is it! I got the ivory version and it is beautiful. The folks at zZounds are really friendly and knowledgeable particularly Andrew, give that guy a damn raise! LOL I had some questions and Sam got me in touch with the right people quickly! This is my first purchase but there will be many more! Thanks guys.
Sound
This amp has a very articulate clean channel and you don’t lose it with gain at all. And it will get nasty!
Features
I have just got this amp today but so far I have not found any negatives.
Ease of Use
There is no learning curve, just plug and play, I set all of my eq knobs to 12 o’clock and then went from there.
Quality

These are manufactured by Fender and they are great to work with and very friendly and understandable, I can tell you from experience if you have a problem they are very quick to resolve it.

I play thru single coils mainly for the articulation, sound and feel. usually, the only way to really thicken them up enough to sound heavy and cut through while playing rhythm was a boss ds-2 in front of an amp. This amp however… WOW! I can’t believe all the b.s this thing cuts out of the equation . The cleanest and rightest amp I’ve ever heard and played thru. Champs are great, the jcm 2000s are great, vox, orange or even black star. but this thing is above anything else I’ve heard. Seriously put your money to good use. Whether gig or jam or home, plug in and play. This thing is inspiring, cuts thru and LAF!

Already have the 80 watt head and a few 412’s to feed it to. Decided to get the 40 watt version for grab and go. I use the Iconic’s as rock and hard rock amps. Pretty much stay in the Green OD. Only pedal in front is a Chase Tone SP. Warmed the bias to 33mv(stock cold at 25mv). Put my Alnico Cream 90 in and changed preamps to EH 7025’s. For a bit less hiss. Cleans up nicely with guitar roll off.Phenomenal hard rock amps. Very happy.

Ive never had money for a decent Tube amp and always wanted one really bad so I could clean my tone by rolling back the volume pot on the guitar (something a digital or solid state don't do). This thing delivers all the gain and cleans up up when you do! It delivers everywhere. Overdriven clean channel is a beast too. You can do a lot with this amp...I love it and thank God for zZounds!

I opened the box, pulled all the contents out and set it up. Now, I had power as the light was on. I played with the switches in the back for 1/4 vs full power, the standby and nothing. Now I have plenty of amps. So, I thought ok I'll unplug the 2-Button Footswitch and see if that's the problem. I also changed cables and guitars as I have many amps and all this equipment outside of the amp works in all my other stacks and amps but there was no sound. Finally, I plugged in a brand new cable out of packaging, plugged it in and just touched the tip while settings out low. Nothing.Extremely disappointed. I decided not to exchange it for another one.

Purchased the 5150 and had to wait a few days to open the box up and attempt to use it...attempt as it did nothing. No noise, no nothing. Tried every setting on the standby and on/off switch that instructions state, still nothing. I was really looking forward to using this amp. But the good news...zZounds says they can work a replacement for me in a few days time. I can handle that. Will look at doing another review when that one comes. but for now, I have to give this a one star.
Sound
I have no way to tell how this amp is going to sound, aside from reviews on youtube. I was hopeful it would be exactly what I wanted. zZounds will replace it which makes me feel less stressed about it. I did not want to pry into the back of the amp and make matter worse. So back to the barn for this one.
