I’ve been considering purchasing an SG now for a while and was originally wanting to purchase a Gibson using the payment plan Zzounds offers, but decided to purchase an Epiphone first and then save up to buy the Gibson outright. I saw that these new models were “inspired by Gibsons” and watched a lot of reviews on them so I decided to pull the trigger. This thing is fantastic. I have owned many Epiphones in the past, but this thing feels and sounds like it’s 3x more than its price. I was really blown away by the quality of the entire guitar, especially the pickups and electronics. Past Epiphone models have always felt and sounded “good”, but this one is fantastic and honestly just so much fun as well as addicting to play. They really outdid themselves. The guitar screams high quality while the price shouts budget. It honestly feels exactly like a lot of the Gibson SGs I’ve played. If you’re looking for a budget classic, you will not regret this one! I’m so impressed I’m now considering picking up a 2020 Epiphone Les Paul

Just received this amazing guitar! The craftsmanship is flawless.I have had a Gibson SG. The Epiphone is neck and neck to the Gibson and a$1000 less. The tone is authentic Gibson growl.

I am speechless and I didn't expect the quality of craftsmanship and sound quality that blew my hair back like I have never heard that kind of tone's and high end sustain of any other instrument I have owned and I have two SGs now but the other one is one I built from a diy kit from Solo guitars and I stained it a black cherry and I am proud of the way it turned out. I upgraded the electronics to Epiphone probuckr two's and it came with the 500 series pots and tone control and it was also solderless with plug-n-play connection that a nice change I must say. So Yes the SGstandard1 is my drug of choice.lol

This SG has blown my mind away since I took it out of the box and plugged it into my Marshall. The brightest sounding humbucker I've ever heard, designed in the Gibson laboratory. The fretboard us like butter. I'm in love. Plan to buy their V next. Keep cranking them out, Epiphone!

This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
Feels and sounds 85% if the way to a decent Gibson SG, nails the look, and at something like 1/3 the price or less! So glad I bought this.
Sound
It sounds pretty much like an SG would! I like these pickups as much as Gibson 490r/490t, these Probuckers are similar construction and materials and sound. If you like vintage sounding humbuckers these are great, not perfect, but thoroughly good. Epiphone has come a long long way!
Features
I like that this has fretboard binding giving it a more expensive feel. The neck is not too wide or thick, but not too thin. The CTS pots are great and need no upgrade!
Ease of Use
To get great sounds I had to lower the neck humbucker, it came raised very high. Other than that the setup was pretty good! Shredders will like lower action but was pretty easy to bend and chord with right out of the box.
Quality
I checked out the wiring and it looks good. Nothing I would need to redo or change for classic SG sounds.
Value
Now that Epiphone has improved the headstock and offered my favorite color combo, white with the full sized pickguard, with ok paf type pickups and good electronics, I had to buy one! Just wish it came with a case for that price.
Manufacturer Support
No contact with manufacturer.
The Wow Factor
Epiphone finally fixed the clipped ear headstock and dodgy electronics. And Alpine white with black guard is the best look for an SG and no one will ever convince me otherwise and Epiphone nailed it. Could only get better if it was real mahogany and nitro finish but then it would be three times the price.

GREAT guitar for the money. Neck feels good, knobs feel smooth and solid, tuners are super stable and satisfying to adjust and it sounds wonderful. I got the Alpine White and thought after ordering maybe I should have gone for red, but nope, the white is awesome in person. This thing is a blast.

Totally amazed at how this SG compares to the old Gibson SG I used to play years ago. I saw a you receive that stated you can tell the difference between them if you are playing them side by side and have them both there to do so. However I can't tell the difference between them. I really wanted the Gibson name brand, I settled for this one when I saw the price difference. And I am glad I did. Now I don't want a Gibson because this thing plays better than the Gibson's I remember. Maybe I just got lucky idk. But so far the reviews are following suit. I'm picky, I recently purchased 8 brand new guitars looking for one satisfactory for me. This one is my favorite, and some of the others I paid more than double of this one. Great job Epiphone. Keep up the good work! Thank you zZounds for another great axe! Super fast shipper, super accurate description of the guitar! I'm giving this one to my daughter for her birthday and ordering another one identical.

I’ve been a guitarist for going on 23 years now and have owned a lot of them, including a Gibson USA SG Standard at one point. I’ve been continually impressed at the affordable, high quality gear Epi has put out over the last decade. My girlfriend got me one of these in heritage cherry and it’s just a banger of a guitar. I LOVE it! My other main guitar is a 2014 epi LP Custom Pro and it’s also a wonderful guitar to play. Fit and finish are great, setup needed very little tweaking upon unboxing. Easier on my back than a lester :-) It sounds like an SG!

"Nice Guitar, however…."

This guitar showed up in need of a complete setup. Nothing was properly adjusted and setup, and I’m still not sure about the neck truss rod. Fortunately for me I know how to setup a guitar, however everything was out. When I set up a neck I usually adjust for .009” relief. I am unable get that with this neck probably because the truss rod was installed wrong at the factory. I might send this one back for that reason because if I ever go to a light gauge string I’d have to raise the action at the bridge so high it would be unplayable. As far as the CTS pots, they’re a very cheap version and they’re not very good. I replaced all of them with Bournes 500k pots and installed a Switchcraft jack. It definitely makes a big difference. Now that it’s been setup and fixed, except for the neck truss rod, it’s a great guitar. The Epiphone pickups sound great and the tuners are nice too. The finish is perfect and the stock hardware seems good. I certainly can recommend this guitar, but I feel zZounds should at least try and send these out in better condition. A setup like what I did would cost about $150. The last guitar I bought from zZounds was perfect, they let me down this time.
