I've been hesitating to buy a Les Paul for quite some time. I like guitars that are Floyd Rose equipped, however, after trying an epiphone in a guitar store, I realized the guitars I've been buying over the last year have the wrong neck width, I could never play clean open chords on them. I would always mute unintended strings no matter what I tried. The neck on this guitar is perfect for me, I can strum chords cleanly now. It puts a big grin on my face every time. Who cares if I don't have a whammy bar on this thing now I'm going to learn how to play properly. I can hardly walk past this thing without picking it up (it's gorgeous)! The probuckers sound just fine and I'm accustomed to Seymour Duncan's,The tuning machines on this guitar are wonderful they're the smoothest tightest machines on any guitar I own. I'm extremely impressed with them. I've put my shredders to rest in their cases for now, this is my main guitar and who knew? It cost just a bit more than half what the others cost! The playability of this guitar is great I'm having a blast with it I wish I had discovered this sooner but, I'll take it now just the same! It's lightweight compared to my other guitars but sustain is just as good. The gold-plated hardware is not something I usually like on a guitar but on this white one it's absolutely beautiful and gives one the impression that this is a much more expensive piece. This guitar is a winner, and at this price you can't go wrong. What great sounding eye candy! Thank you Epiphone and thank you zZounds. smiles all the way!

This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
This review is a zero-hype,true blue analysis done in a recording studio by professional musicians. TRUST THESE WORDS.A year ago we purchased a basic faded red 2018 Gibson Les Paul w/490T pickups from zZounds that convinced us into being true believers regarding Gibson quality;no QC issues other than a dry fretboard. So when we evaluated our new Ebony Epiphone Les Paul Custom, we did it side by side with a USA Gibson, recorded in a studio setting with MANY different amps,cabs,effects....dry/wet etc.. It was all about the SOUND and PLAYABILITY, not the looks of the guitars. The test results for the Epi surpassed our expectations by a long shot, and I can personally say I have NEVER had so much fun doing an A/B test between two guitars. The only difference is in the pickups, with the Gibson 490's usually having a slight edge, but even that became subjective due to personal taste and what was needed for a particular song. Now to evaluating the unboxing and initial test run. Our Ebony Les Paul Custom arrived in flawless condition, as in the actual definition. Not a single mar or flaw in the paint anywhere, top to bottom. A single thumbprint from a sweaty hand will show up from a mile away though. Same with the binding, neck and headstock inlays. Grover tuners were mounted in exact alignment. The gold plating matches everywhere, it looks so good! The frets dressing's are as good as the Gibson, not a single sharp edge. The CTS pots and the wiring job are stellar, with no shortcuts or cheap components. We may try a few different tone caps but we are very hesitant to mess with near perfection;same regarding the stock pickups. Bottom line, we purchased a 5 star guitar at a 3.5 star price. One of the finest guitars we have ever played for under $1,500. Big thanks to zZounds and Epiphone for gettting it right.

In the past I have owned a few Epiphones. But this one is far superior! If you blindfolded me and I had two guitars to choose from Gibson and Epiphone, it would be a really hard to make a distinction. Epiphone has really knocked it out of the park. If you were on the fence about buying a new Epiphone guitar, do not hesitate by one!!!!

Just received this Guitar out of the box action was a little high but lowered it had some buzz on the neck but raised the action a little and it’s OK it’s gonna need a set up nothing major the frets on the edges need rounding the fretboard needs conditioning but the Ebony is really nice. The guitar is put together very well I can’t see any problems although it’s very heavy that’s good the solid mahogany the playability is excellent the probucker pickups sound great I have another Epiphone les Paul that had the pro buckers but was not happy with them replaced them with the Gibson burstbucker‘s with this guitar the pickups are great I think that is due in part for the CTS pots and the Ebony fretboard. Through my fender deluxe reverb with distortion it sounds amazing and clean sounds are great.Epiphone Has definitely upped their game On making quality instruments this new line of inspired by Gibson definitely shows I have the Epiphone 1959 les Paul and that guitar is just incredible do not hesitate to buy this Les Paul custom it is well worth the price.

Guitar arrived on time. One day delivery. I was unable to insert a cable into the guitar output jack. It couldn't be pushed in at all. I got into the body cavity and pried the contact away a bit. Then shoved in my cable and it locked in and stayed. Meltdown averted. This guitars probuckers are so stained and discolored that I will have to purchase some Music Nomad cleaner. If that works I'll write that review later. The upscale tuxedo look, marred by the appearance of the pickups, is still evident. Only up close and in your lap is the tarnish noticeable.Playability and sound are thankfully very good. Tuning is good. Volume and tone pots good. Neck is fast playing. Tone is pretty warm. Phat lp tones. I've gotten a few guitars lately and am getting weary of qc surprises. The gods must be laughing. Hope the worst is over.

My fourth in the “inspired by Gibson” series - my second tuxedo Custom (the first was so good - wanted to snag another before/if the line eventually gets axed). This purchase came with an unexpected & initially unwelcome surprise, prompting me to initiate a return. Upon inspection - came to find tuners are no longer the famed Grover’s, but from Wilkinson, despite the Grover hang tag still proudly affixed to the headstock. Why the change? And why continue to advertise the Grover’s? Had me wondering what else might not be original on this one? After reading some comments here & elsewhere - apparently this is the new norm, but again - without explanation. After weighing things out, I’m going to be canceling my return request, as these guitars remain an outstanding deal for the price, and the tuxedo getup is in a league of its own.

Plays like a dream right out of the box. I have lusted for this guitar for over 40 years (I'm 57) and it did not disappoint. I always test electric guitars unplugged before I ever listen to them plugged in. I'm looking for "that" sound, sustain, that clear ring. This one has it. It is as bright and clear as my Gibson. The ebony fretboard is beautiful. Plugged in, wow. Sounds like a Les Paul is supposed to sound. I can't put it down. One tiny issue in that the frets are a bit rough and need a little polishing. I had a very hard time finding one of these in stock and zZounds had it. The guitar was in my hands within 3 days. Get one before they sell out again.

(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
This is my 4th purchase from the new "Inspired by Gibson" line. and now that I've had it a few weeks, it's my favorite. It even managed to beat out my Epiphone '59 Les Paul, mostly because it's really hard to walk by this guitar without wanting to pick it up and play it. It looks THAT good. Plus, you just feel a little different when you're playing a Custom, it feels special. I bought the Alpine White, because I know that a glossy black guitar is a fingerprint magnet. Every time I open the case, I hear the same "Wow, that's really nice" comments. I was concerned that the neck would be too thin, but it's not. It's a nice, broad, almost shallow C-Shape that fills my hand nicely. The Probuckers are working great for my style of music. Mostly hard rock, but they also clean up GREAT. The hardware is doing its job just fine, the nut is cut perfectly and the Ebony fretboard looks and feels like a proper Les Paul Custom should. I will give this guitar a complete setup (highly recommended), but I do that for every new guitar I buy. I suppose my only regret is that I didn't get one sooner. I started playing guitar almost 30 years ago, and back then, a guitar of this level of quality would have set you back thousands of dollars. I can't say enough good things about this Custom. This is a professional-level instrument at a bargain price.
Sound
The Probuckers are under rated, Just dial them in correctly and they will cover almost any tonal ground. Heavy to Clean.
Ease of Use
Plays great. Low action, no buzz and great fretwork.
Quality
Fit and Finish are 10 out of 10.
Value
Best guitar for under $1,000 these days.
Manufacturer Support
I haven't had to deal with Customer Support.
The Wow Factor
The Les Paul Custom is regarded as the best looking guitar ever made.

Pretty good. I've wanted this for a while, and when I finally got it I do gotta say I was a bit underwhelmed.. The input jack has always been loose, and even after I took it in to get it looked at, it only seems to get worse. I bought this back in August btw. The intonation was waaay off out of the box too which still bothers me. Honestly, it is a pretty good guitar overall but there's better options for cheaper. Just putting it out there before anyone makes a final decision

"My Epiphone Les Paul"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I new at guitar and had several of the less expensive styles of the top guitars. One of them was an Ibanez RG well compared to the Squire Stray and. Really less expensive named Spectrum that Ibanez and a couple more the Ibanez was so much easier to fret and really sounded good through the peavy amp. I keep looking at the Les Paul's I heard so much and ran across an Epiphone Les Paul Custom special on an on line yard sale. The prettiest and badass combination I could imagine that the guy changed the pickups to the Seymore Duncan Slash pickups and I ordered the gold trim prices to put around them and I switched the black knobs on the tuners that he also replaced with locking ones with the gold knobs from the original tuners all of this before I even messed with it and even for an intermediate player I was floored. Man does this thing fret and sustain and bend and the hammer ins and pull offs was so much easier I mean a lot so the long story if your learning get one of these guitars and you will cut your time to play a song after you learn it in half it is that much easier to play than the 100 dollar special they call for learners. Unbelievable difference and everybody that sees it says what a good looking guitar I got the natural wood one that is as shinny as it is easier to learn on

I bought guitar in a Left handed model in Black with gold Hardware. I love the Guitar and the fact did Epiphone mad it in a Lefty. The is amazing. THe only issue which is the same I have with my Gibson LP Standard it's too heavy I have to sit to plat it. For the under $700.00 compared to my Gibson LP STD $2,699 that sound is about the same. The Epiphone is well worth owning for under $700.00.

I was on the fence with this one but one day I decided to pull the trigger and happy I did. This guitar is stunningly beautiful but also plays like butter. You can get any kind of tone from this axe easily. I plugged it into my Blues Deluxe Reverb and got some beautiful jazz tones out of it. It also excels in Rock or even 60's instrumental rock, pop, blues or any other genre. I am not a shredder but I wouldn't rule that out either. As for fit and finish, it's flawless. The guitar sounds really close to my Gibson LP to the point where you can not tell them apart. Epiphone is stepping up its game and giving us some great affordable instruments. Next is the 335 they just came out with. I already bought the LP Slash, the LP Koa, and the LP Special all great instruments as well. Don't be afraid to buy Epiphone, they are good instruments and play way about their price level.

This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
Received this guitar yesterday and OH MY GOD. I have had numerous versions of the Epiphone Les Paul Custom, but the 2020 takes the cake and puts them all to shame. The CTS pots, pickups, improved hardware, and EBONY fretboard really make this guitar a pleasure to play. It also has a lot more weight and thickness to it more like a Gibson Les Paul. Out of the box I was able to play this guitar with ease. The setup is decent, but as we all know, you have to set your guitar up to your specifications so you really can't let factory set up effect your opinion. I mean, it comes all the way from China lol the setup might just change a bit in transport. Still not a bad setup out of the box. Once I set it up and put my 10-52 Dunlop's on there, BANG! As I do with all my guitars, I will switch out the electronics for EMG's, but if you didn't, you will still be happy with the thick chunky sound this guitar produces. I'm also happy that the neck is more rounded. I like more of a rounded and semi beefy neck profile on my Paul's and this one has it. I have numerous top notch Gibson Les Paul's and I'll tell ya, this Epiphone 2020 LP Custom rides right with them. She's a keeper alright. For me, this was a great purchase.
Sound
The guitar sounds stellar. The pickups are hard hitting yet clear and the notes are definitely defined. I'm a rock/metal guy and it suits all my shenanigans.
Features
The components are top notch and it stays in tune like a champ. Like all Les Paul's you have to have a properly filed and lubed nut, but once you get that going it stays in tune rock solid.
Ease of Use
It's super easy to get a great sound with this guitar. I plugged right into my EVH 5150 III 50w and BOOM. Monster sound.
Quality
Just got it yesterday, but I've been playing for a long long time and I can tell this guitar will last and hold up for years to come.
Value
This guitar is worth more than it's selling price. I don't care what people say about Epiphone. If you think Epiphone is terrible you're just being a snob. Sure, 25-30 years ago they weren't fantastic and had struggles, but they've come a long way. Overseas guitars are getting tough to beat nowadays.
Manufacturer Support
I have dealt with Epiphone in the past and it's always been easy.
The Wow Factor
I have a lot of guitars for sure. Numerous Les Paul's Gibson and Epiphone, Flying V's, Wolfgangs, Ibanez...ect....I have problems lol. Even tho I don't need to have this guitar, I am happy to have it.

(see rating details)

The Epiphone Custom in Ebony is one of the most beautiful looking guitars you'll ever see. The workmanship is on par with Gibsons. The Probucker pickups sound to me to have been designed for this model. The neck is comfortable, with a little broader fretboard compared to a standard. The short tenon doesn't impact the sound negatively, the axe has a slightly compressed sound with distortion, which goes with Customs. The cap appears to be thin, but that makes the guitar resonate more than a 1/4" cap, giving it a hint of acoustic harmonics. I am sure that the cap has a lot to do with the tone. This axe plays, sounds, and looks great. You absolutely can't go wrong, get it.I have played a 60's black beauty. This is a better guitar. I will revisit to verify it. I will probably try a Gibson bridge and Duncan neck pickup soon just to compare, but doubt the bridge pup will be an improvement. Others with this axe swear by replacing the pups, as always a personal preference. Lastly, this axe required the least setup "tweaking" of anything I have used in decades. I usually toil for a couple of weeks before being satisfied with a low action spot on setup. The guitar was excellent out of the box, I didn't have to do a thing to it, and it sounded and played great. But I'm an old timer who loves 70s-80s rock and low action LPs, so here is what I did:#1. Very lightly used emery cloth to slightly widen (.001-.0015") the top (back) end of the G string nut slot toward the G tuning post, because that catches on bends with standard nut cuts. People spends thousands and luthiers often don't even know this. They blame G string detuning on a ton of other things and charge all day to fix it. Just slightly curve open the ends of back G nut slot, like a driveway ramp, but not as dramatic, just a tiche. I recently figured this out myself, in a year you'll be reading it everywhere lol.#2. Very slightly tighten the truss rod to the right (right is looking from the headstock top down the guitar neck, your face behind the top of the guitar) 1/4 to 1/3 the distance to horizontal. This will put the fretboard nearer to flat. They probably stopped shipping with allen keys because they could damage the axe in shipping. You can do this yourself, get the allen wrenches/drivers, don't use a plain screwdriver.#3. Put on Ernie Ball pink pack 9s strings. The stock strings are Gibson Brite wires 10s, and they sounded excellent, but I had to go 9's. I also use Eb tuning and check intonation, that's just me. (I think I had to tweak one string, the rest held intonation in Eb with the 9s.) If I were focusing on cleans or studio work I would probably put the brite wire 10s back on. They work. That was it. I did a little bridge and pickup height tweaking to taste but these adjustments were all I needed to make this play like an awesome Custom machine. It responds to the tweaking like a high-end instrument. That makes it a high-end instrument in my book. The clean tone has shimmer, movement, and slight acoustic harmonics, and when you use pedals it is extremely expressive.I congratulate and Thank the Epiphone designers, craftsman, and setup people for an outstanding job on producing this instrument. I'm looking forward to more outstanding axes at reasonable pricing from them!! And Thanks to zZounds for making it affordable.

My dad bought me my first guitar when I was 13 years old, a Gibson Les Paul custom silverburst. I have loved and cherished it from the first day. Now 40 years later it's still the love of my life, as far as guitars go. I bought another Epiphone Les Paul custom, white, from zZounds and I have to say it is everything that the Gibson is, only difference is I bought this one, it sounds and plays exactly like the Gibson. One of my goals in life was that I wanted to collect Les Pauls.. I've been playing for over 40 years and still get goose bumps every time I get in front of a crowd. Playing guitar has been a tremendous passion for me, all the things going on in life seem to fade away when I'm playing. Now zZounds has made it possible to fulfill my dream of collecting Les Pauls.. Thank you zZounds for making my dream come true. Everything I ever order arrives when they say and in mint condition. THANK YOU. By the way, I have already recommended you guys several times.

I've played and owned numerous Epiphone guitars over the years. Started looking for a Les Paul Custom style guitar, but wasn't ready to drop 3k+ on a Gibson. So I tried one of these out in a store and was very impressed, and brought it home with me. I've had this Epiphone Les Paul Custom in ebony for over 6 months now, & still haven't even gotten a proper setup for it yet, but this thing is great!Really, over 6 months of playing without a proper setup and I've only found a couple of minor flaws. The first flaw is with one of the volume pots: it crackles and sometimes cuts out when I don't want it to. So this tells me that the pots and wiring could deserve an upgrade. That being said, the pickups in this guitar sound fantastic and I see no reason to change them. The pickup switch feels solid. The other flaw is that there is some tuning slippage with the G string. I know this is a common thing with many guitars, and the slippage isn't drastic, but maybe a little annoying because I need to retune the G string every 5-10 minutes of playing. So this makes me wonder if perhaps the nut could be worked on, or perhaps eventually a tuner replacement could be in order. I will have to see after a proper setup if that is the case, but otherwise nothing else tells me that the tuners are bad. The tuning keys feel very solid and smooth, they feel and appear to be nice quality and the other 5 strings stay in tune very well, so that's that.Like I said those are the only flaws I could find with this guitar, everything else is pretty much perfect and sound-wise this guitar can probably get really really close to an actual Gibson. Totally worth the money and Epiphone really seem to be stepping up their game with their newer guitars.

I was really shocked of the quality and workmanship of this guitar! An easy standard setup on this axe is all it needs. Tune it up, mine needed a small amount of neck relief (which is a must on any new guitar)! The fretwork is absolutely perfect! As is everything else on this guitar. I didnt expect the gold hardware to match but it does! This has been a great online guitar buying experience for me. I am an amature luthier and this one is as close to a gib as your gonna get. The neck does seem a little faster and easier than a gib. Its seems like the same width, with just the right amount of thickness! Ty zZounds!

First and foremost I absolutely love this guitar. I'm a collector and own many high end Gibsons, Fenders, Deans, Taylors ect. and this is my second Epiphone. 2 years ago I took a chance on the Epiphone Johnny A Custom and was BLOWN AWAY so I took a chance again. I will put this axe up against any axe out there, It's looks, it's quality, it's sound and playability. it excelled at all levels. Showed up in 2 days well boxed and in near perfect playing condition. A little fret polishing change of strings and it was ready to go. I'm looking at the SG's now. BUY THIS GUITAR .

Ordered in Alpine White and upon removal from the packaging all I could say is it's STUNNING. As always with zZounds, it arrived on time, in excellent packaging and perfect condition. Intial set up was so good it may be a while before it goes to see the Luthier. Electronics are outstanding. Heads above my Epi LP Tradtional in both playability and tones. I'm very pleased with the guitar and highly recommend it to anyone.

My 13th Epiphone L.P. since 2006, and second of the new "Inspired by Gibson" series (first was the Standard 50's). I am blown away by these next-level Epi LPs - my 50s was astonishingly similar sitting next to my Gibson Original series 50s goldtop, both asthetically, AND sonically speaking, with only slight pickup characteristic differences. This is also my first SlimTaper neck. Thankfully it wasn't an earth shattering change - we'll adapt just fine. My new tuxedo custom came in at a perfect 8lb 13oz - my ideal weight range for a Paul - especially considering these guitars are coming in with about 1.5# weight swings. Got lucky there. Absolutely no build or quality issues, looks incredible, and is appointed well. It is leaps ahead of the very disappointing Frampton signature Epi I bought last year - my only truly lousy Epiphone. NEVER AGAIN will I buy a chambered Les Paul, in ANY form - all the tone gets totally sucked out! Guitar also came in with a perfect setup, which is rare (even though my setup guy always does a once-over on all my guitars). Some fret polishing couldn't hurt, though. Only concern with this purchase was with the final shipment packaging from zZounds - no packing material in the final carton, just loose box in a box. I think that's a first.

Was interested in a Les Paul Custom. Saw the Epiphone model advertised at a fantastic price. saw reviews online and bought it. Received the guitar and was happy. This guitar has the best acion I have ever seen on a guitar, I have Gibson 335, Epiphone 335, Ibanez Artcore, Fender Strat, PRS P22, PRS Custom 24, PRS Hollowbody, Seagull acoustic, Yamaha A5R, Martin acoustic and my trusty old Roland G707. This actually surpasses each of them and the QC is impeccable. Even the wife sad she is glad I bought another guitar.

2-Day delivery and my Ebony Les Paul Custom arrived in perfect condition. Quality Control apparently on their A Game as every component or feature is excellence defined. Everything is right. Played it a week with Marshall amp,a USA Gibson Les Paul and Fender Stratocaster, used same pedal board settings for all 3 guitars. I fell in love with a Chinese neck sure was a total surprise. And this axe is not too heavy, I know because the first guitar I played in bands with was the Gibson version and it became torture playing 4-6 hours a night. Heavy like cement, it had tone for days but this Epiphone is lighter and has tone for days too. And the binding, inlays, finish are 99.8% perfect. Frets feel better than Gibson but don't seem same quality metal. The pickups are above average for imports and normally they would stay put but this guitar is so fine it deserves the upgrade to USA pups. Again, the neck it's amazing to play. I keep feeling stunned every time I look at the finish, and the performance,as a player's instrument, is equal to USA quality of several Gibson Les Pauls I have owned over the decades, and leaves no doubts to what is in your hands when playing through professional gear. So much fun to play. I say it's a bit overpriced and then I go over it top to bottom looking for a flaw and can't find one and change my mind. First time I've ever felt smart and smug over a guitar purchase but hey I did myself good this time.

I've been playing since five years of age ( I'm a big Fender & Peavey guy ) Only way to say it - AWESOME GUITAR - I had always thought of adding a LP to my collection ( Chester & Lester were my biggest influence growing up ) I always thought it would be a Gibson for me - I was so impressed by Epiphone I went and bought a ES- 335 style ( Riviera ) also my first blues/jazz style axe ( 4 BB K ) if you only have a grand to spend - you will never find a better instrument - God bless all you musicians and God bless the music.

"The Kind Of Guitar You WISH You Could Purchase New For Under A $ Grand"

A worth every penny-type of axe, at oh-so-close to Gibson USA quality. It plays lke a USA,looks like a Chinese. It's the same glossy black used on our Epi 2015 Flying V...it's a color black that looks cheap, yet the V was immaculate finish-wise, as is our new Custom. Necks feels like that 2015 V,too. That other review was right on, as you can walk into a pro studio and use it right out of the box. Compared to lower price plain Jane Gibson Les Paul, this beautiful mahogany body will destroy it if some dirty fingered goldplated humbuckers are added. Frets,intonation,mar-less paint job, real pickups and wiring USA style, just so many things exactly right. The finish perfection is amazing, just what you want. PLEK it and upgrade to Billy Gibbons Growl-style pups, you now have one hella unique Ebony Custom that fits into a lot sonic space. Great guitar stock!

Ive owned Gibson Les Pauls in the past just because of the Gibson name. Most recently owed a Les Paul Traditional and comparing this Epi Custom to that i don't see any reason to spend the 1000 dollars more for the Gibson. From the pickups to the cts pots and fretboard everything is top notch. From the binding to the paint can't find any flaws. Put on new strings and lowered the action to my liking and ready to go. If Epi keeps putting out guitars like this no need to spend the big bucks unless you want the Gibson name and there's nothing wrong with that.

I hardly ever get to say this, but I was blown away with this one straight out of the box! I have three gibson Paul's, and have had to multiple setups in order to keep them in tune but I haven't had to touch this beast yet. Before you can even talk about playability, you have to take in the asthetics alone. The cream binding , real ebony fretboard, and gold hardware make you wanna wear a suit while you play this thing. Ive ran it through the same pedals and amps as my gibsons, and I barely have to tweak things to get similar sound quality. The neck is really comfortable( supposed to be c shaped but has a flat d feel). The bottom line is, that I think this is the best guitar I've ever purchased that cost under a grand!

Just not enough words for the new Custom Les Paul's. Very similar,in my memory,to a black ESP Ltd 1000 (?) with gold hardware that an artist used in the studio that I really loved;I hated to see it go. The Epiphone is a real keeper of a guitar, beautiful out of the box but I added a bone nut and Gibson pickups, strung with 9-42's. 100% satisfied with my new Epiphone and the upgraded headstock is a plus, vanity or not but it just looks good.

Beware! I owned this model 3 or 4 years ago, first class in every aspect. Just bought it again from zZounds, this model guitar has been cheapened up (as everything else in society). Guitar sounds thin, very light now, cheap plastic jack plate (awful), it just plays and feels like a $200 Chibson. Just dumped it at a loss. If you want a quality instrument, buy vintage.
