"Best Noise Gate I've ever used"

This thing works amazingly well, and for what it does I can't believe what it sells for. They could double the price and I'd still say it was worth every penny. It took a little experimentation to figure out the best place to put it in the chain and how to set the controls but once I got it dialed in it was perfect. It completely eliminates the hiss and static from the guitar and all the pedals but only when I want it to and without having to turn it on and off all the time. The controls are very intuitive: The Reduction knob controls how much it kills the sound, from all little knock back to clamped all the way down to nothing. The Thresh knob controls how little input from the guitar is required to open and close the gate, so it can be set to close the gate just by muting the strings or by rolling the volume knob all the way off and pretty much any setting in between. The Release knob controls how quickly it closes the gate, from instant shut down to slow fade. The best feature and the one that makes this pedal the most effective and usable noise gate I've ever had is the built in effects loop. To try to explain why this feature makes this pedal so effective I need to describe my pedal chain. It has the straight signal path which is: Guitar--> Compressor-->Tuner-->Noise Gate-->Chorus-->Delay-->Amp. Then it has the gate's effects loop: Noise Gate(send)-->Overdrive-->Fuzz-->Distortion-->Noise Gate(return). Putting all your noisy pedals in the loop lets the gate ignore them and focus only on the signal from the guitar to tell it when to wrangle those trouble makers back in line. If you just put this thing at the end of the chain you are not going to get good results. You'd have to dial up the Thresh knob so high to get it to deal with a distortion or fuzz pedal that when you went to clean or a mild overdrive the gate would clamp down on the signal between notes and chords. In that scenario you end up clicking the gate on and off all the time, which kind of defeats the purpose. I have mine dialed so I click it and forget it. The last thing I would mention is that this pedal doesn't produce any noise of its own and it doesn't click or pop when turned on and off. If I plug it in by itself and turn the amp way up and the volume on the guitar all the way down I can click the pedal on and off and hear no change at all. Same goes for when the volume is up, play a chord, click on the pedal and there's no change at all until the signal fades out and the gate closes. So it's completely silent with absolutely no tone sucking. This pedal has become as beloved to me as the compressor, you don't really notice it when it's on but you miss it when it's not. The ability to go from wall of gritty-distorted-fuzz-madness to dead-silent-like-your-amp-just-died then back to wall-of-noise is really satisfying to me for some reason.

A great noise pedal. Works for really high gain pedals/amps. Get it!
Sound
I ordered this pedal twice. The first time I cancelled because of a bunch of YouTubers saying that it’s a slow pedal and that it was bad. Then I ordered the Smart Gate, I was told that it’s perfect for death metal. I’m not sure if it was broken but it only worked without gain and who buys a noise gate for clean tones? I spoke with someone at zZounds who recommended the Silencer. Finally got my hands on one and it works perfectly and it’s about $40 cheaper than the horrible Smart Gate.
Features
I love the fact that it’s black, I’m planning on having nothing but black pedals on my second pedal board. The effects loop on it, is the thing that makes it the best noise gate I’ve ever owned. Also, the fact that it has three knobs is great so your settings will allow you to have more sustain or less if you’re trying to djent on your guitar.
Ease of Use
This pedal has three knobs but it’s very easy to use. The effects loop makes it seem like you’re using two noise gates. One right after your guitar and one after your noisy pedals.
Quality
I instantly fell in love with this pedal. It doesn’t feel cheap, it’s made out of meta. The brand logo looks beautiful and the design is great.
Value
I’d buy this pedal if it was more expensive but please don’t make it more expensive because I want another one.
Manufacturer Support
It’s my first Electro-Harmonix pedal but after using this pedal, I can tell it won’t be my last.
The Wow Factor
The pedal is everything I wanted out of a noise gate. It’s exactly what I needed for my style.

"Does Everything You Need"

This is great for taming a loud setup or a noisy guitar. I have a 65 Kapa Cobra that I love, and when you really drive up the mids and throw some gain on it you get a great growl, but it will also squeal non-stop. This is an easy solution to tame the squealing but not make me have to back off on the gain. For metal this works as well, killing noise from a high gain amp with an OD on it, but it could be just a tad faster.

I researched and found the best reviews for this pedal, that’s all I could do. After playing with this, definitely one of or not the best gate pedal I’ve used so far. You will be satisfied.

"Not what I hoped"

I have a 10 pedal board and noise contributors included my Fulltone Plimsoul, Ego Compressor, and Earthquaker Devices ToneJob. This pedal has a lot of options but I found it complicated and basically innefective for live situations. If you eliminate the noise completely, you have to wait a few notes in to get any sound at all, back it off and all the noise comes back completely. Sometimes you can get it to be in real time but it thins your tone to half. once you get it dialed in to your satisfaction, if you turn up your amp or any of the volume knobs on the pedals, you basically have to start all over. First day I had it I had it set perfectly at the house, then went to practice. Couldn't figure out why I wasn't hearing anything at all, went through all my cables, checked my amp.... it was the silencer blocking everything at the same settings that worked fine at home. Long story short, replaced with a single knob ISP Decimator which solved everything. Twice as much but I'm done playing around and glad I did.

"Love EHX but this pedal failed"

Really great out of the box, packed with features (par for EHX) but just a few months and the power via supply connector failed. Love all of EHX pedals but this one let me down.
