I already have a half dozen distortion boxes including MXR's Classic Fuzz, Distortion + and Prime Distortion but when I saw this 'next generation' Fuzz Face with the newly added tone control, I had to give it a try.
Sound
Patterned after the Fuzz Face Jimi used at Woodstock and with the Band of Gypsies, this thing can unleash absolute THUNDER. I've run it through my Vox AC15C1 (tube) & Marshall MG100HCFX w/MG412 cabinet (solid state) using my Les Paul and my Fenders and they all sounded awesome. My Epiphone Les Paul Custom has the Seymour Duncan 'Hot Rod' humbucker set and it screams when run through this pedal.
Features
The level of fuzz goes from mildly crunchy to a thundering roar reminiscent of Frijid Pink's version of 'The House of the Rising Sun'. The newly added tone control makes this the most versatile of all of MXR's Fuzz Face pedals.
Ease of Use
It's beyond easy to use. Plug in, tune up and rock out. Getting to the battery compartment is a pain because you have to remove the bottom of the pedal but I use an AC power adapter so that's not an issue.
Quality
I own ten Dunlop Era MXR pedals and have only had a problem with one of them. I bought that one used so I have no idea how it was treated by the previous owner.
Value
There are less expensive distortion boxes out there but none sound like this. Being a licensed product of Experience Hendrix likely contributes to the price but a guitarist can't help but be inspired by seeing Jimi's face looking up at you when you step on this pedal.
Manufacturer Support
I haven't had to contact them.
The Wow Factor
Wow Factor? This pedal Jimi Hendrix' face on it. That makes for some major league 'WOW'.
