Small but mighty, the Boss Katana Mini puts clean, crunch and the infamous "brown sound," plus delay and 3-band EQ, into a compact battery-powered combo amp.

"King of the Fly Weight Amps"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)

Simply put, Boss' new Katana Mini has assumed top of the hill status when considering a small, light weight amp that has an assortment of convincing tones and effects and can run on batteries alone. The previous fly weight contender, the 5 watt Black Star Fly, will now be relegated to the bargain table. Boss added two watts, extra voices and managed to maintain its fly (feather) weight status. For a small inexpensive practice amp, it will be tough to beat the Katana Mini. In fact at the moment consider this new Boss offering to be the King of the Hill in the Fly weight class. And yes, you can purchase an AC adapter if batteries don't do it for you. Hats off to Boss. They get it!!

I own the Katana head and I love it. Run that bad boy through a vintage Marshall 4x12 and it’s magical, however sometimes I want to sit and watch a movie while shredding and this is was my solution. Shred at the office. Shred at the beach. Shred in space. No limits! The sound quality is wonderful and this little champion pumps out some serious volume. The clean channel sparkles while the crunch channel sounds so frickin’ AC/DC it’s not even funny. It responds well to your playing for actual musical dynamics. The Brown channel is great and does what it should but I loooove the crunch on this mini better. Metal heads will not be disappointed though, it gets the job done for practice purposes without ruining inspiration like the horrible Line 6 things. The delay on the amp is simple and great. I wish they would have squeezed reverb in as well but we have pedals for that if necessary. Once again BOSS does it again for a price so low it’s practically free.

Musical Background:

Semi-pro (getting paid to play but I can’t quit my day job.) I’ve been playing for 16 years. Gigging for 10.

"Boss Katana Mini"

A PHEE-NOM of an amp, it raises the bar (along with blackstar fly 3) of what a mini amp can and should sound like. Big amps in an apartment are dicey to use after hours. Practice late with these two amps to your heart's content and sound great. As a novice non pro I have no need for bulky boxes. Instead of worrying if it's too late to play, I simply play. The control lay out is strikingly similar on both the katana mini and fly 3. Both possess a very effective delay vol and delay time that sounds great. If you haven't geussed, I own one each of these 2 amps. The Katana is bright and cheerful whereas the fly 3 digs into the more neutral, shadowy frequencies of the blues. The Katana rocks out. No guitarist could fail to spot the phenomenal quality of these revolutionary amps. No power supply. The Katana mini uses Roland's PSB120 keyboard power supply, not easy to find. Or 6 AA batteries. Power supply is $40. I got mine for $32.95 at Amazon. Batteries are included with the Katana. If you want to play all the time this amp might be your answer.

Clean crunch and brown you can get a good tone out of all 3. Delay is ok. Turn down the time and crank the level and u got reverb kind of. I have the Blackstar fly 3 and its dam good for the money. Imho the katana surpasses the fly 3. This box rawks. I played it for 3 hours when i got it. Tried it with Duncan JB/59 then EMG retro active humbuckers and active single coils. Then my deluxe Roadhouse strat. Then Dimarzio in my vintage Talon II... There's a reason people are talking about the Katana. I could tell you but if you buy one you will know why immediately. Get it from zZounds and your good to go. Got mine in 1 day and no shipping charge. Thanx zZounds. The Katana mini put a smile on my face. Almost as good as sex lol err um not really but it will make u wanna play. Get one now.

"Big sound in a little box"

I've been a bass player since 83 and just picked up the guitar a year or two ago. I purchased a guitar a few months ago and didn't have funds for an amp. So, after watching countless vids and reading many reviews, I favored this one the most. No local stores had a katana under 50w so, the payment plan zZounds had was perfect and received this little beast on Wednesday. With that said, no vid or review could compare to the hands on experience. For a 7w amp, this truly is a must have and the sound is 100% phenomenal. I'm personally not into effect pedals and what features this amp has, is just enough for me. The delay is just right as well as clean/crunch and brown features. The only problem that I have is, though it comes with 6 AA batteries, the adapter would've been more preffered.Other than that, I highly reccomend this amp to everyone, and would highly recommend zZounds payment plans (if your credit card qualifies) and customer service is great tooOne more thing, it's a lot smaller than I thought and that's one of the many reasons why I reccomend this to everyone.

"Nice Little Amp"

Got this at a discount “blemished” but can’t see anything wrong. Came in factory box wrapped with all docs and batteries. Sounds decent considering the size. Clean is a good Fender type sound and brown is EVH style. Crunch could be better, I’d prefer if it was a bit more overdriven blues sounding. Good for just noodling on the sofa. Sounds fine through headphones. Has a cab out line and DI through headphone out. Curious to try that. It sounds better than the Fender mini amps I have. Might be a close call vs the Blackstar mini which sounds pretty good also. It’s likely not loud enough for a jam unless your friends are playing acoustic.

For what you get, this amp is well worth the money. I’m a hobbyist and it’s perfect for that. You don’t need a cord as it battery operated ( It does come with 6 AA batteries but it doesn’t come with the AC adapter. I bought one). It has delay and a three band EQ, three channels (clean, crunch and brown). If you’re looking for a little desktop practice amp, this is definitely a good option

"Having to buy power supply makes it WAY overpriced!"

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars

When I opened the box I couldn't believe how small it was. It has a decent clean, a cool crunch and a nice "brown" lead sound. The delay is relatively useable.
Sound
The clean seemed a little bright, but was pretty good. The crunch is okay. It sounds better with an 808 or a boost in front, but that defeats the purpose of a bare bones setup for camping etc. The brown channel is a nice crunchy mid-high gain and the best of the three. It is pretty loud, but strangely not as loud as my three watt Vox Mini.
Features
Very small (a good thing) Bare minimum feature set - gain, volume, bass, middle & treble. Two knobs for delay - time and level. Clean, crunch and brown switch. Aux in and a cab voiced headphone and recording/line out.
Ease of Use
Simple to use.
Quality
The thing is made of plastic. Which isn't too comforting. The Vox Mini I own is tolex covered thick particle board.
Value
This is the category where it falls very short.Katana Mini $100 - 7 watts, 3 amp types, delay, DOESN'T come with power supply ($40 sold separately, CAN NOT use typical 9v adaptor) made of plastic.Vox Mini 3 $140 - 3 (very loud) watts, 10 amps and line, compression, chorus, flanger, trem, 2 delay and 2 reverb separate mic input with trim adjustment and delay/reverb.Adaptor included made of sturdy tolex covered faux wood
Manufacturer Support
I haven't dealt with manufacturer.
The Wow Factor
It sounds dynamite, but should have come with a power supply

I don't have good news. I don't like it buzzes like a blown speaker and doesn't sound as good as my Blackstar of a similar type. Sorry, I wish I could do better.
