This Mockingbird Special X has more than you will get for the money from any other co. True neck thru, real fretboard, Grover tuners, versatle pick-ups. Individual volume and tone for each pick up, 3-way toggle switch. Plus, the volume, tone controls actually work linear, as opposed to going from full on to full off. Read on.
Sound
I am a huge classic rock fan, and in the last few days jammed along to live and studio led zeppelin and aerosmith. and was able to change tone from jimmy page to joe perry and EVEN brad whitford, aerosmiths "tonemaster". Mockingbird means just that. a bird that can "mock" what it hears, and of all 9 of my quality brand axes, this is the one ive been blistering my fingers on since i got it.
Features
The wood is mahagany, some say its cheap from africa or something like that. i dont care. its heavy enough to sound and sustain like an L.P., has tight geared Grovers, real fretboard, not plywood, great stock pups, separate volume/tone controls that REALLY function, awesome finish. ***I also just bought a cheap bc rich masterpiece eagle & BOTH guitars have dead even necks and PERFECT fret work. I have mechanical engineering background and tools. i could not believe how low i could set action without fretbuzz, so i measured and BOTH guitars were straighter than anything ive had.
Ease of Use
Its a little heavy, but thats what i wanted. Les Pauls are heavy, but thats what makes them what they are. Fret access easy. no rough edges and nice transition where neck meets body. problem is front strap button is mounted in an angle, causing it to wanna tilt away from you. However the reason makes sense. if they put it on tip of horn it would be a weakness, if put below horn, your strap would chafe the guitars finish. i put the strap on, then loop it around the horn w/soft clothe in between. i will relocate button later. no biggie. this is strong wood, it can handle being drilled, but dont do it yourself if you are not sure about it.
Quality
Like i said earlier, I have owned or played all the big names. This axe looks amazing, (i got tobacco burst) has tight tuning gears, perfectly cut nut, dead feven neck and frets, smooth linear pots. and heavy metal parts. It should easily outlast anything even above its cost
Value
Without exageration, this guitar far exceeded my expectations, i envisioned a bowed neck, fretts popped up, a nut that was cut to deep and one or more strings laying on first fret, volume and tone controls that were more like on/off switches. NOT so. Not only would i replace this if something happened to it, but i might by one or two more if zzounds makes the other colors available!
Manufacturer Support
I have two BC Rich. this special X and a 299.00 masterpiece eagle. I have not even thought of contacting support, except to commend them. these are great under-rated guitars. and i am in no way reviewing these for obligation. these are my own words. i am extremely satisfied with both of my BC Riches. Bernie Chavez would be proud. R.I.P.
The Wow Factor
Honestly, people either love or hate the shape. i dont care. its in your face beautiful, and every cut n curve speaks volumes of bernie rico and his artisans. If the shape is the only reason you dont buy it. You are really missing out. live or studio there is SO much the Mockingbird can do. Tight on $ ? Buy a masterpiece version. the quality is there too. I am picky. and im not exagerating. this is a great guitar. I have NEVER rated anything a ten. the strap button almost had me remove a point for its location, but the good outweigh the bad very much so with this Special X. Imgivin it a 10. and im 47 yrs old and playing most of my life. Try one.
