"Great Rack Mixer for Pre-Mixing Drums"

Overall: 3.5 out of 5 stars

I use the 12R to pre-mix my drums and just send a stereo pair to the FOH. I play in a 60's through today band. Not a lot of frills but I love having a great drum sound. I mic 6 drums and 2 overheads so taking up 8 channels on a small board doesn't leave much for the rest of the band.So for about $1500 or so I bought this Alesis 12, (3) DBX Dual Compressors, A Lexicon M300 and DBX 2 x 15 EQ. I take the XLR from the Mics into the 12R, insert Bass, Snare, 2 Toms and 2 Floor Toms into the compressors. I take the snare and go into the reverb unit so I can change my sound from song to song. I use the EQ on the snare and bass to totally dial in the tones. The snare is then run into a stereo channel so I have the dry mix and the wet mix. All these are then mixed into the stereo pair and sent to the FOH board. The one drawback is not having the ability to tweak the levels mid-song, but We don't even use a sound guy...we just soundcheck well and make sure the sound is good. Overall this unit does the job for what I need it to do. We use a Mackie for FOH so the signal isn't really being boosted much by this unit.

"Decent cheap mixer"

This is a super convenient little mixer with actual decent sound and fairly quiet for its price range. Obviously a $1,000 + mixer is going to sound better, but this gem is very usable in low-stress environments, like a small church or school auditorium for a podium mic, a solo mic, and a CD player, it is excellent.

"This mixer is a gem!!"

If this mixer were stolen, I would definitely replace it with another just like it. There is no other rack mixer that can compete with this one for its size, price, and performance.
Sound
This mixer is quiet and clean. I use it in a live setting. According to the manual, the mixer works best using a high-level setting on each channel slider. I tried that, the results were terrific. It still has plenty of headroom for those input hungry power amps.
Features
This mixer has individual channel inserts. It was originally geared toward recording, but I use it for live performances with terrific results. It also has XLR inputs per on 8 of the 10 channels. This mixer is well worth its price.
Quality
Excellent quality. Never had any electronic trouble.
Value
Excellent value mixer... does what it was designed to do quite well... that is, bring the input signal to a pre-amp level without introducing noise!
Manufacturer Support
Never needed it...
The Wow Factor
This mixer has a new faceplate... it changed from black to a much lighter color. This improves visibility of panel markings. The knob colors were changed, as well, which aids in quickly identifying the each knob's purpose.

"Nice features, but bad mixer."

Overall: 2 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Sound
The preamps on this mixer are very touchy and don't provide enough level.
Features
The mixer has lots of nice features for a rackmount mixer, but the preamps are junk.
Ease of Use
Finding a good setting on the trim settings can be a challenge with dynamic mics.
Quality
Poor engineering with the preamps.
Value
The mixer is cheap considering all the features, but I no longer use it because the sound doesn't come close to my other mixers.
Manufacturer Support
The phone support was not very helpfull.
