"The i/o2 versus the io2 express ?"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars

I have the original io/2 and NOT the "Express" model that came out later! Here's what I think is the problem? The "Original i/02" HAS multiple I/0 's on the back that of the unit! I use it to plug into the Desktop( not using the RCA jacks but using a standard instrument cable) and send/play music tracks through the PA system! I also use it for recording and playing through the unit and have had no issues once the learning curve was done! I use a Shure sm-57 and a sm-58 and do NOT use the Phantom power! For me, this has been a great unit for "Interfacing to the computer and out to the P.A. system ! Thus, I can also jam/ learn tracks via PA! I have had no issues and the headphone feature is good for silent recording or practicing! I like this Interface and also know there are many alternatives out there. Please look at the features of each to see which suits your needs!? The only problem I have found is that IF the signal is TOO strong it will clip, so adjust it accordingly! The other feature I like is I can send the signal to the P.A. OR my Alesis Studio Monitors ! Maybe Alesis should bring back the Original Model like I have! They are hard to find and buying used ? You never know ? I nave had mine for many years now and it is still kicking! ( Please look at the diff on the ios on both models!?) Sorry to my frnds at Sweetwater , I did not buy this here at the time! BUT hope this helps others! I gave support a 3 because I have not used them much? This Rating is for the Original , sorry....

"Alesis i02 Almost Great until It Breaks, Now It’s Just a Cheap Broken Toy"

I thought that this Alesis io2 would be a good way to add two tracks and send it via USB to multi-track recording software. At first, I was impressed by the basic features, and the fact that it made two separate tracks/channels possible. It worked great at first yet, the phantom power seems too weak of a boost for my preference. The phantom power that it comes with, is only enough to activate a condenser microphone and it will make the signal register and function. I connected one channel/track to an effects processor with my guitar, and then my microphone up to a tube pre-amp on the second channel/track, and that was the last time it ever worked. I do not think that should have blown it out, it’s normal for musicians and engineers to need to chain things together and make circuits. I even tried adjusting the software and changing settings, checking the sample rate, cards, buffers and drivers. But, this thing is toast; I only had it for a year and paid about $75.00. At some places these things are up to $99.00! This device would be a fair/good deal, if it was at a much lower price, if it came with a 10 year warranty, if it was durable; able to handle both ordinary and more complicated applications, and if it came with improved phantom power. They really need to improve this thing and drop the price. Otherwise, they are just spiking the price for junk that they will not back up past 45 days* or whatever you got. I recommend, that if you can plug in to a power source, buy a real USB mixer instead, they are so much better for the price. There are alot of quality USB mixers with phantom power out there, Alesis even makes better ones, just not this product, it's cheap like a toy.

"Might be a great product. Doesn't work. Help not available"

Overall: 1 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Sound
Unable to get my computer to recognize the device, so I have no experience with its sound capabilities. It might be really great. Software is all loaded and registered, my computer says io2 is working, but my computer cannot detect anything at the USB port. Other devices work fine in all the USB ports.
Features
Device looks simple and clean, but includes Cubase LE software that is a hassle to load, activate, authorize etc. I did not particularly want Cubase-- I just wanted the hardware--a simple sturdy audio interface I could use with different software programs. I figured that loading the software disc would automatically install necessary drivers and provide configuration details for my computer. I run windows xp. I have no experience with Cubase, and it's not much help in activating the audio interface hardware.
Ease of Use
This thing should be really simple. I've tried researching latest drivers for the io2 express, or information on troubleshooting software for this thing. Still, my computer does not detect it. The manual is simple and short. 3 pages in English, adequate for hardware needs.
Quality
appears to be sturdy, clean, simple, well-made
Value
for a hundred bucks, it should be a bargain. I'm more bummed about troubleshooting time wasted. The cash is nothing. Life, however, is precious.
Manufacturer Support
Item is new. As of Sept 2010 there isn't a baseline of reviews and troubleshooting suggestions. For many products you get a lot of good feedback because a lot of people have dealt with similar issues. This thing is unknown. Alas, I'm no techie, so I'm doubly screwed.
The Wow Factor
sex appeal? I just want it to work.
