"$9000 Sound Nearly Free"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Sound
I own the AKG C414 that I use a lot on major projects. But when I was looking to replace my Blue Bluebird that was my studio work horse I jumped at the fact that AKG made an affordable tube mic since I also own a Rode K2. The AKG has all the features and sound quality of mics that I have spent $3k or better on packed into a $700 price tag. I really like large 1" diaphragm mics but I love them when there a dual design. This mic is that. So you end up with a nice fat, round and in your face recording. The tube design only adds to this piece uniqueness. Giving you that rich warm harmonic tone a lot try to duplicate with plug-ins. If you're looking for that big high-end mic sound this is a steal. I'll put it up against any mic hands down. If it had a self-cooling system, my Sony C800 would be gathering a lot of dust.
Quality
Its the AKG craftsmanship that you know and love. Don't let the low price tag fool you. Attention to detail is packed in every micron of this mic.
Value
Let's just say you might want to buy this before AKG realizes the prize they're just giving away.
Manufacturer Support
Can't really say since I haven't needed yet.

"An Exceptional Mic"

I'll keep this short and to the point: If you have the money buy this mic - the sound is exceptional, the build quality is excellent, the included shock mount is A-1 quality, the control box is great. The ONLY small gripe is it is so hard to open-up the mic to get at the tube - but since the included tube is of very high quality that won't be an issue for some time. I was worried about the proprietary cable: it's very long and the pins in the plug are very small. But the length doesn't affect the sound at all, even coiled, and the plug is of high quality - just don't go mashing it into the mic - make sure you have it aligned. The sound from this mic is incredible. Natural and warm, great dynamic range, smooth buttery lows and sharp bell-like highs. Be fore-warned this sucker is SENSITIVE! You will be able to hear conversations in adjoining rooms if you don't do something to isolate it.
