"Pro input on MPC2000XL"

Overall: 3.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
The storage methods on the MPC. ZIP is unreliable. Floppy so much. SCSI is expensive and old tech. We need an MPC 2005 with USB 2.0 and firewire. (The MPC1000 is not enough)
Sound
It's ok. The MPC has its own sound character. it is not linear, that is what you sample is not exactly what comes out. Drums sound a little more meaty which is good and the output stage, when driven hard, sound nicely compressed. I like it, you might not.
Features
Out of the box, without the EB-16 FX card, it is really simple. Just a ADSR and a simple filter. The filter is not good for anything but cut hi frequencies, nothing compared to - lets say the EMU filters. The sequencer however is dynamite once you get to understand it! If you know your basic MIDI you will love it, if you don't, well you have to learn.
Quality
It breaks down. The jog wheel dies after 1-3 years. The slider dies after 1-3 years. If you drop it it breaks easilly. It has a quite a sturdy casing, but inside it's breaking parts. My MPC 'motherboard' was soliderd in 43 places after a major accident, now it works again (I toured with it for 2 years, then someone dropped a monitor on it - Crash!!). If you use it in your home studio you propably will not have any problems. If you going to use it live and carry it around, get a flight case!
Value
It could have been cheaper. I mean I bought a 1997 machine in 2001 and the price was 1997. Meanwhile other machines outperformed for the price, but the MPC is still an MPC. So you pay for the name and for the sequencer...
Manufacturer Support
What support? It was practically impossible to get spare parts in nothern Europe. The OS need updates. The whole fkn MPC needs a major update (not just a mpc1000 kid brother) The 4000 is a nice studio centerpeice but nothing to tour, bash studios and play live with.
The Wow Factor
It is sexy.
