Moog Labyrinth Parallel Generative Analog Synthesizer

Explore new creative wormholes with the Moog Labyrinth, a semi-modular analog synth with a unique dual-sequencer design for swirling polymetric melodies.

The Moog Labyrinth is a semi-modular instrument and idea machine that discovers patterns, layers, and textures both familiar and unheard. Two generative sequencers bring to life sounds that bloom over time, letting you control their evolution and scale, then play them off of each other for striking polymetric melodies. With parallel analog signal paths, this unique instrument shines when adding color to the static backdrop of a drum pattern or bassline. Fully capable of standing on its own, or adding depth to your existing rack, it's equally at home in a live set or at the center of a humble bedroom studio. Labyrinth is the lightning in a bottle that drives a studio session deeper into undiscovered creative caverns.

Check out our exclusive video demo of Moog's Labyrinth:

The beating heart of Labyrinth is a robust dual sequencer, which uses chance operations to construct two unique eight-step paths which twist and curve around each other, forming a mesmerizing path of sound. With a comprehensive patch bay, Labyrinth can be synced via analog clock or MIDI while processing, directing, and being influenced by other kit.

Tune your instruments together and let Labyrinth improvise alongside in key while you play Matriarch. Patch Labyrinth and Spectravox together for animated spectral movement. Combine Labyrinth with Mavis in a 104HP rack for expanded modularity. These are just a handful of many playful setups where Labyrinth fits. Whichever path you choose, have Labyrinth guide read more you.

Who is Labyrinth for? Composers, Producers, Synth enthusiasts and Eurorack builders, Sound designers, Existing Moog users

Features:

- Dual generative sequencers create intertwining melodies that mutate over time. It's a fountain of inspiration that uncovers patterns you can capture, return to, and evolve.
- A fresh approach to the signature sound of classic Moog synthesizers with a smooth West Coast-style voltage-controlled wavefolder. Two oscillators drive duophonic melodic counterpoints, metallic FM tones, and analog synthetic drums.
- State variable resonant voltage-controlled filters that morph between lowpass and bandpass responses let you experiment with smooth command over complex tonal shapes.
- A parallel voice processing path with a voltage-controlled blending allows you to morph sounds over time.
- A comprehensive patch bay for integration with a wide variety of other modules in your rack and studio.

The Labyrinth is somewhat of a deviation from the "traditional" Moog subtractive synth paradigm, but under the hood, its still pure Moog and most certainly has the essence of the sound that lots of people have come to love. It's for sure in the experimental realm and the focus of this semi-modular device is more about generative sequencing and modulation vs sound design. I will point out that even though the traditional synth controls are somewhat abbreviated they are thoughtfully implemented and when combined with the patch bay there is still a considerable amount of sound experimentation to be had. It's simply that the emphasis of Labyrinth is more about rhythmic manipulation and discovering interesting grooves with melodic patterns. The 2 pole ladder filter is what makes a Moog famous, instantly recognizable, and included along with an expanded wave folder taken from the Mavis design. These are cleverly put in their own independent signal paths VCA's and all up until the mixer where the signal is recombined. Along with the parallel configuration a switch allows you to run them in series with the ability to choose which circuit comes first. The star of the show is the "dual generative sequencers". If you are at all familiar with the immensely popular "Turing Machine" Eurorack module, these sequencers are essentially two of them with some expanded functionality. There are A LOT of parameters to tweak, but Moog includes a very useful cheat sheet to help you until its second nature. read more But at the end of the day everything is accessible, easy to understand and really begs you to sit down, starting fiddling with knobs and get lost in the endless rhythm variations and sound textures that couldn't otherwise be created with traditional synths. Its a very cool semi-modular, and as a cherry on type if you have other semi-modular gear this is a perfect companion.

Sound
The nature of the sound is very much classic Moog mono synth. Predictably with its icon filter is excels at baselines and pads. The way this sound is manipulated is what makes Labyrinth special. Unlike most traditional synths, the idea is more to guide it by making parameter adjustments and let it generate unique and pseudo random rhythms and melodies.

Features
Everything is well thought and and extremely useful. The patch bay makes the possibilities nearly endless. The learning curve on semi-modular gear is a bit hight, but experimentation and community engagement online will get you very far on a rewarding journey.

Ease of Use
The core sound is Moog all the way through, how that unfolds is unpredictable, but ofter leads to surprising, interesting, and very cool results.

Quality
Its seems typically high quality Moog. The wood side panels are a nice touch, and even the inclusion of the quick patch overlays to help you get started makes the whole package seem really nice.

Value
Well worth the price, Moog is a legendary company that makes legendary products.

The Wow Factor
For people that are fan of synths, this has a ton of appeal. It might be a bit too unconventional for some, but its right up my alley
