Graded Hammer Standard action keyboard. New Contemporary Piano sounds.

Gigging keyboardists, serious students, lovers of piano music of all stripes, lend the Yamaha P85 your ears! You'll be glad you did, as the P85 is one of the finest sounding digital pianos in its price range--or any price range! Plus, it's packed with practical features that any player will appreciate. If you've been seeking a keyboard that's professional yet affordable, full-sized yet portable, performance-centric yet flexible, the Yamaha P85 is exactly the right fit!

Plays And Sounds Totally Pro
The P85 give you access to some of the most sought-after features in the digital piano market, the first being Yamaha's celebrated Graded Hammer Standard action keyboard. The keys respond to the touch like a real instrument should, with smooth resistance and quick rebound. The graded action feels heavier in the bass and gets lighter as you move up the keyboard, emulating the gradual action shift of an acoustic instrument. And the Yamaha P85 sounds just as good as it plays, thanks to Yamaha's AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) stereo-sampled grand piano sound set. Yamaha builds some of the world's finest concert grand pianos, so they know exactly what a piano should sound like. The digital Yamaha piano experience is one made all the richer for that know-how, and the virtual instrument responds just like the real thing, with note timbre changing expressively the harder or softer you play. There's also an input jack for footswitch sustain control, and a switch-style pedal (the Yamaha FC5) is read more included. Upgrade to a piano-style footswitch (like the Yamaha FC3), and the P85 allows for special half-damper sounds. In short: the P85 sounds like music should.

Slim And Portable
While the P85 sports a full 88-key keyboard and its own sound system, it still only weighs about 25lbs. It's light enough to carry under one arm, and slim enough to fit into compact vehicles. The P85's integrated, stereo speaker system means you won't have to lug around additional amplification for smaller gigs or home practice.

Beyond Stage Piano
While the Yamaha P85 is focused on delivering acoustic-piano performance in a compact and affordable package, it comes with a few extras only available in a digital instrument. Beyond the amazing sampled piano sounds, the P85 has a wide variety of high-quality and expressive instrument voices, including electric pianos, basses, percussion, strings and more. The keyboard lets you layer two of those voices on top of one another, so you sound like two keyboardists at once. You also get a selection of 4 different reverb effects and a lush stereo chorus effect to sweeten the P85's already sweet-sounding instrument patches. Other extras include a metronome--a must for effective practice--and a built-in recorder--a boon to budding songwriters and composers.

It's the digital stage piano experience like only Yamaha can deliver, with amazing sound, realistic feel, and a wealth of smart, practical features to enhance your playing experience. The Yamaha P85 isn't just an amazing value. It's an amazing piano. Available in silver or black!

Later i'll probably buy Yamaha's top of the line DP simply because i like this one so much.

Sound
The sound quality is superb. I give it a 10 star rating (for it's price point - and probably the best i've heard for under $1,200). I'm refering to the samples themselves, thru $30 headphones, and not the speaker system on the keyboard itself - which isn't too bad either. Rich deep accurate lows and crisp popping highs, yet balanced and not to much treble.

Features
Not a ton of features, but what do you expect for $499. It has what you need and then some.

Ease of Use
Plays EXACTLY like a real grand piano. The keys play smooth and have a perfect feel when applying crescendo. Keys pop up nicely too upon release. The manual is clear and simple. Also, i noticed the buttons on top such as power, volume, voices, etc, are sturdy and have a quality feel when you push them down.

Quality
Built to last. Everything's fine in this regard.

Value
Well, i was deciding between this and the Casio DP for the same price and the Yamaha has MIDI IN/OUT which is SO important to those who work with DAW's. I also read a lot of reviews saying the key action is a little better on the Yamy. This keyboard is such an awesome value. I even bought it the day before it dropped to $499 and i'm still happy with it.

The Wow Factor
Yeah it looks good and all, but it's a DP with a plastic encasing - what do you expect. I did notice the keys have a nice rounded edge on the sides of the black keys which helps for good playing action and this makes the keyboard palette as a whole look nice and polished.
