TASCAM 112MkII Cassette Deck

No longer available at zZounds
Dolby B and C noise reduction with HX Pro headroom extension. ±12% pitch control. RCA unbalanced I/O.

This is the classic "no frills" production workhorse! For musicians and production studios, this 2-head cost-effective cassette deck is ideal for production mastering and mixdown. The direct drive transport provides optimal tape speed stability, which keeps the wow and flutter problems found on other cassette decks to a minimum. The gear and clutch input level controls make level adjustments easy by allowing you to lock the controls together, or use independently. The 112MkII also features a parallel port for external control and an optional balanced connector kit, making it flexible enough to integrate into any production studio.

I'm in it for the long haul. I got this to do remote recordings of my jazz trio, and some studio mixdowns of analog 4-track recordings, and am so impressed by the performance of this unit. I much prefer it over DAT or MD for mixing or doing live-to-2-track.
Sound
With the right tapes (TDK SA and SA-X, for example), it sounds heavenly!! TDK's technical support told me it's calibrated to TDK tapes and I believe it wholeheartedly.
Features
I would prefer an external bias adjustment. Even though it's a 2-head deck, that still would have been useful.
Quality
Built like a tank. . . .which is why I bought it in the first place.
Value
It's only a tiny bit pricey. I feel it's well worth it because of the sound and build quality. An external bias adjustment would've given it a 10 in my view.
Manufacturer Support
They eventually are able to talk with you (either by calling you back or after you wait on the phone a few minutes.) And their info. is GREAT. A guy named Jimmy at Tascam is the product specialist, and he knows his stuff. You can tell he's been around the business and these analog products for awhile.
