Overview
The VM-7100 is a processor with 10 analog inputs plus room for one 24 channel R-BUS expansion.
No Snakes, No Patchbays, Total Digital Recall
The Roland 7000-Series V-Mixing System is the world's only compact, separate-component digital mixing system. It allows you to configure it in countless ways, expanding up to 94 channels with 88 analog inputs, dynamics and delay on every channel, and up to 32 mono effects. The console itself can be up to 200 meters from the heart of the system - the rack mounted processor. That means no snakes; no "wiring experts;" no patchbay! You could easily spend the whole price of this system on wiring alone with other setups. Just rack mount the VM-7100 or VM-7200 and plug all your synths/mics into the front and up to 24 digital inputs from your analog or digital multi-tracks in the back (using the optional user-installable VM-24E). Then access the patchbay screen to route anything anywhere and memorize the routing as a scene or template. Imagine silent instant patching without a ton of wires strewn around the room. Imagine a live set up where the processor stays on stage and only 2 cables travel to the Front of House mix area. No expensive long cable runs; no expensive microphone boxes. You can even add another console and leave it on stage for the monitor mixes.
Once you configure your rig, the VM is a pleasure to work with. For starters it has Roland's killer 24-bit A/D and D/A convertors and the lowest latency in its class. That last spec means… read more you don't get that thin "digital" sound when you run many channels at once (other consoles have increasingly deteriorating phase problems as you add inputs). The 25 motorized faders (VM-C7200) feel great and easily double as sends, pan settings and perhaps most amazingly, trim levels for ALL inputs (you need to spend a couple hundred grand to recall input attenuation in other mixers and that is a MUST for actual complete recall of your mixes). Also, the VM utilizes a unique "flexBus" system so that 12 individual busses can be freely switched between aux, recording, monitoring, and matrix functions. That's right - 12 separate mixes can be sent anywhere for monitoring or whatever purpose you need!
The basic system comes with dynamics and delay on every channel and 2 multi-effects installed for everything from reverbs to distortion to COSM amp and mic models. The master section has excellent mastering tools included. Plug in up to 3 more VS8F-2 cards (per processor) for more 24-bit effects or inserts. Control your multi-tracks or computers from the built-in transport and locate buttons (100 locates and 100 scenes per project). Save your projects to inexpensive SmartMedia. Pack up your whole console in a couple of cases and take it anywhere (all the wiring is in the rack!). Add a variety of different R-Bus units to input/output more analog (with phantom) or AES-EBU or ADAT/TASCAM MDMs or computer cards. Use Roland digital speakers for amazing models of all of the world's favorite studio monitors. Toggle between audio and MIDI control for your whole studio from the same board. You can even accomplish a discrete 48-channel recording (24 per processor) since the VM allows direct outs to every tape/MDM channel (as well as the buses of course).
Other Cool Features
Phase correction for every input by sample, millisecond, or distance (!)
24 fader groups
Real-time sample rate conversion on digital inputs
EZ routing templates
EQ and Compression libraries for instant recall or audition
Speaker switching capabilities
5-band EQ per input
Of course the VM Series supports 5.1 mixing (facilitated with the joystick on the VE-7000). It also includes a built in Real-time Analyzer with a master graphic EQ for setting up your room (or saving setups for different clubs you play!). If you or your clients like big pretty pictures on a computer screen, use E-Magic's Soundiver software for fabulous graphic representations of everything. read less

"This is best value for the money spent."
I am very satisfied with this mixer. Though support and the midi-part need some work
Sound
This mixer sounds great!
Features
The midi control is absolutely must for recording purposes and this mixers midi control is ok, though there are a few things the designers didn't think about when designing the midi-part of the mixer.
Quality
The faders are not as tight as I was expecting and the software needs a little work but other than that it works for me.
Value
Best value for the money spent!
Manufacturer Support
They could update the sofware a bit more frequently...
