Mix and play audio from USB drives and CDs. 115mm illuminated jog wheel. New scratch effects.
Overview
In the world of Professional DJing, the name Pioneer commands respect, and for good reason. Ever since Pioneer introduced the original CDJ-1000, they've simply dominated the CD Deck market with innovative technology, DJ-friendly features, and superlative build quality. The Pioneer CDJ-400 continues that tradition, and breaks all new price barriers, making it one of the most affordable CD Decks available that's still capable of pro scratch techniques and gig-worthy reliability. If you've been hesitant to step up to the most revered name in CD decks, your wait is over.
Scratch-Worthy, Illuminated Jog Wheel
At the center of the CDJ-400 is the jog wheel/platter. At 115mm it's more compact than its bigger brothers, but this sensitive and precise controller retains all the same functionality as the platters on the CDJ-800, CDJ-1000, and CDJ-2000. Plus, it features radical LED lighting effects that offer touch-feedback and virtual disc position, just like the center LED ring on other CDJs. Use it to pitch up or down in CD mode, or execute wild turntablist moves in Vinyl mode. You'll up your game as soon as you lay your hands on the CDJ-400.
Play Audio From CDs, USB Sticks, Or External Drives
CDJs made milk-crates full of heavy vinyl a needless encumbrance, but even Compact Discs are a burden by the digital audio standards of today. Pioneer keeps their gear on the cutting edge, which is why in addition to audio CDs the CDJ-400 can read MP3 digital audio from a wide array of sources.… read more Stock hours of MP3 tracks on a single CD-R or CD-RW, or plug in a USB thumb drive or external hard rive into the back of the unit, and use the CDJ-400's intuitive browser controls to find tracks fast. The large info screen displays track information like artist and title and ID3 meta tags for quick on-the-fly play-listing. Plus, you'll be able to travel with more music than ever before--literally days of music on a single 4GB thumb drive--making your services that much more valuable to potential party-throwers.
Control Surface For Serato And More
Already using Serato Scratch or similar DJ software? The CDJ-400 supports MIDI over USB, making it the logical bridge between your scratch skills and your laptop's music library. But here's the best part: every rotary pot, button, and slider on the Pioneer CDJ-400 communicates MIDI data, so you can customize direct control over any parameter in your DJ software using your CDJ. Think of it as adding intuitive control over your software, or as adding reliable CD playback to your laptop rig.
Looping And DJ Effects On-Board
Though priced well within reach aspiring DJs, the CDJ-400 still boasts pro features like built-in loop creation and special effects that'll take any set to the next level. The intuitive looping controls couldn't be easier, and the linear loop slicing tool can be used to create awesome stutter effects. The CDJ-400 also has three dedicated effects for each control mode (CD or Vinyl), including wah-wah effects, phasing effects, and instant scratch effects that'll make you look like a seasoned battle DJ.
A truly professional CDJ that breaks all previous price barriers, the Pioneer CDJ-400 is a game-changing CD deck. It's got the pro feel, pro build, and pro extras that'll kick your DJ sets up a notch. SImply put, you can't go wrong with a genuine Pioneer CDJ. read less

Pioneer DJ's Description
Pioneer CDJ400 Pro CD/MP3 Player
Never before has a digital turntable been more multi-purpose, multi-faceted, multi-featured or more fun. The new CDJ400 gives DJs everywhere the power to scratch, effect and play music from multiple sources, including CDs, MP3 files from USB drives, even controlling computer-based DJ software right from the player. Welcome to a new world.Designed by DJs for DJs and drawing inspiration from our industry standard CDJ-1000 series, this latest member of the CDJ family is fully geared up to serve the next generation of digital artists. The CDJ400 allows you to play your MP3 collection off CD-R/RW discs as well as music from mass storage USB devices, such as USB keys, external hard drives and portable media devices. The deck also features the world's first Scratch Jog Effects, with three creative scratch effects and an amazing new Loop Divide function.
Virtually all of the button and slider functions can send MIDI data via USB output, making it possible for the decks to control DJ software and other applications, such as our DJS or Serato Scratch LIVE on a PC or MAC.
Digital media playback
The CDJ400 handles CD Audio and MP3 files from CD, while USB connectivity lets you draw upon sound libraries on external storage devices. Through the new push-selection Rotary Scroll Wheel and Back Button, you can navigate files and folders as simply and quickly as on many of the leading portable media players available today.
MIDI control via USB
As you'd expect, the CDJ400 can control DJ and music application software. This is achieved by simply selecting the PC Source Select button, so that virtually all of the deck's buttons and slider can send MIDI control data via the PC USB connection.
So when MIDI is the message, the CDJ400 definitely delivers. For example, a DJ can connect the CDJ400 to a PC or MAC and play and manipulate files from their favourite DJ application software - such as Pioneer DJS or Serato Scratch - and this doesnt even require a time-code disc to be used in the deck.
New illuminated Jog Wheel
With a design inspired by the club standard CDJ-1000 Jog Wheel comes the CDJ400's 115mm illuminated platter. You can choose from six different patterns of Jog Wheel illumination and even personalize your own CDJ 'slip mats' or jog sheets.
New Scratch Jog Effects
In addition to the Digital Jog Break Effects (JET, WAH and ROLL) found in CDJ Mode, we've included our world first Scratch Jog Effects, BUBBLE, TRANS and WAH, in vinyl mode.
BUBBLE simulates a scratch technique and is great for spin backs, while TRANS is like rhythmically transforming with a mixer's cross fader and WAH resembles the guitar Wah pedal.
New Beat Loop Divide
Making the magic of live mash-up even more manageable, the new Beat Loop Divide facility rhythmically dices loops to fashion beats with drama, intrigue or whatever your desired effect. It is easily adjustable during loop playback, thereby creating loops with mind-melting, dancefloor-destroying twists.
Hot Loop and Beat Loop
Besides the Beat Loop Divide, the CDJ400 lets you create flawless four-beat Beat Loops and Hot Loops. For the latter hit the Hot Loop (In/Out point) buttons during a loop to retrigger the loop. Up to 10 Cue/Loop points per disc, for up to 920 discs, can be stored in memory and transferred by usb key between CDJ400s.

"Snap these up before they are gone!"
I puchased these as an intermidiary set of decks while I save up for a pair of the new CDJ-900's. Even after I do make the plunge and buy new ones, I don't think I will be giving these up. Their size and power make them a really good buy that is easy to port around if you do mobile gigs
Sound
This model of CDJ has very good sound for the price, however if you compare it with the more expensive players in the Pioneer line, there is a noticeable difference (which is to be expected as you are paying less)
Features
This player has almost everything you could want in a CDJ. The only features that are missing are a waveform display, break / start speed adjust, and cue pads. Considering the price point, you can't really complain. Pioneer have packed these units with great features found on players costing much more. One thing that should be mentioned is these units work as HID controllers in most of the popular Digital DJ software suites out there such as Serato, Traktor, and Pioneer's own DJS software. With SSL, you still need the SL1 to run the software, but you can lose the timecoded discs. In Traktor you can use the internal soundcards on the players as an aggregate device, but at the moment it is quite figity to get working properly, so using a NI external soundcard (a la Audio 8) is still recommended. The Pioneer DJS software is truly plug and play. Although the software itself is rather simple, it does all… read more of the basics well and will suffice as a cheap alternative to the above solutions (until you can afford to upgrade - if you wanna go that route)
Ease of Use
Pioneer pride themselves on ease of use. This player is no different.
Quality
When you shell out for Pioneer, you get what you pay for. You will hear people complain about the price, but the truth is when you compare their products to the competition... Pioneer delivers on what they promise.
Value
It's really incredible how much Pioneer have crammed into these players without cluttering up the interface. A lot of manufacturers should take note as Pioneer dominate the CDJ market for a reason. These decks should be on your list whether you are a seasoned pro on a budget, working with limited space, or a beginner who wants to invest in a set of CDJ's that you won't outgrow in a year. Pioneer CDJ's also hold their value. So, if you do decide to upgrade in the future, you know you will get a good portion of your money back when you sell them.
Manufacturer Support
Pioneer fiercely protect their reputation and part of what you invest in when you buy any product is the aftercare. Pioneer staff are found on most of the major DJ forums including their own and they are super helpful.
The Wow Factor
They really do look much better in person.
