PRS Paul Reed Smith Archon MKII Guitar Combo Amplifier (50 Watts, 1x12")

Versatile enough to deliver high-gain tones to crystal-clear cleans, the PRS Archon MKII is powered by a pair of 6L6 power tubes with 6 ECC83S preamp tubes.

Greek for "ruler" or "lord," the PRS Archon is a commanding 2-channel amp with versatile overdriven tones and sparkling cleans with plenty of headroom. Designed with five gain stages before the master volume, the Archon's lead channel is voiced to cover everything from Classic Rock to Metal with full, lush distortion.

The clean channel provides rich tones that retain clarity even at high volume, and there is ample headroom, creating an excellent platform for pedals. The Archon has remarkably responsive tone with incredible note separation, whether you're playing on the clean channel or chugging on the lead.

Utilizing a 'no flash or trash' approach, the Archon's control layout allows for detailed and intuitive tone shaping. Each channel features volume, treble, middle, bass, and master volume controls as well as a bright switch. The 3-band EQ lets players better dial-in their desired tone, while the volume and master controls work together to command the amp's distortion and loudness. The bright switch acts almost as a treble boost, putting a shine on the amp's high-end without going into icepick territory.

The global presence and depth controls in the Archon's power amp section both work to modify the feedback network of the amp to unleash the potential of the high- and low-end respectively. Turning up the Presence control releases more high-mid and treble frequencies, bringing the amp's tone forward. Depending on the tone stack and volume settings, the Presence can change read more the gain/ texture and loudness of the high-end, making your tone wilder and more 3-dimensional (or more "present" sounding). In addition to adding low-end, Depth adds a resonance to those frequencies that more 3-dimensionally shapes the Archon's tone.

Bottom Line: The Archon 50 delivers full, lush gain, a remarkable clean channel, and a versatile control layout that players of all genres will appreciate.

I've had about two weeks with this amp, and I'm VERY impressed with it. It arrived perfectly packed...to the point that unboxing it was quite a chore. It had a nifty little cheat sheet card on the top that gives some sample settings to start with, but I elected to ignore those and instead just set all the knobs to noon and plug straight in to the front of the amp. On to the important bits:Clean channel - This is definitely the best sounding clean channel I've played through. I'm not sure how to describe it other than being a very nice full sounding clean sound that doesn't break up easily. It's definitely very high headroom. It's super easy to dial in a GREAT tone. Hell, even with all of the knobs (except for the master) at noon, I got a really useable clean sound. Adding the bright switch definitely gives a more chimey tone, but it's not ice picky at all. It's a noticeable, but not over the top boost to the top end. The dirty tones - There is A LOT of gain on tap in this amp. Yes, it does the tight fast tracking metal tones, but if you play around with the volume and EQ, you can get anything from a cranked Plexi tone all the way to over the top super saturated modern metal. Again, I started with all the controls at noon here and just made minor changes to get to a tone that fits my needs...and it didn't take much knob twisting. I bumped my treble to just past 1 o'clock, the mids are just short of noon and the bass is just short of one o'clock, the bright switch is on and I get read more a great saturated drive tone with the gain ever so slightly past noon. I haven't found a need for a boost pedal, but I'm certain that this amp would take to my TS808 very well. Since getting this amp, I've played it with all of my guitars which include a Strat, a number of PRS guitars, an Ibanez and a Gibson Explorer. All sound fantastic through the guitar, but I will note that there is a noticeable drop in volume when going from any of my humbucker equipped guitars to my Strat with three single coils. Easy enough to compensate for with the master volume controls, however. This amp sounds great with humbuckers, single coils, with standard tuned guitars, and it seems to really shine with down-tuned guitars. I've really been enjoying the tones I get with my CE-22 in C# standard, my Custom 24 in D standard, and my Ibanez in drop B. There's no loss of top end with the lowered tunings, and the bottom end doesn't get overly flabby or unpleasant. The presence and depth controls are nice for fine tuning the high and low frequencies respectively, but, for my purposes they haven't been moved much past noon...this amp does very well with my current guitars and needs with the controls set pretty neutral.I have not gigged this amp yet, but I'm fully confident that it would easily keep up in a band mix in a small to medium venue. I've also not used the effects loop to this point, so I can't comment on that aspect of the amp yet. Negatives - I would have liked to have built in foot switchable reverb like what the Sonzera has, but I can easily add reverb in the effects loop with my Helix HX Stomp if I really want to. An obvious negative that applies to almost every high gain amp ever is that it can be noisy on the dirty channel. This is why folks like ISP, MXR, and Boss make noise gates. Toss one into the signal chain between you guitar and the input, in the effects loop, or both, and it's a non issue. All in all, if you want a more modern voiced amp that has a great clean and dirty channel, this is definitely worth a look. The clean channel has super high headroom and is a great pedal platform, the dirty channel can cover anything you need from the dad-rock AC/DC type tone all the way to super tight high gain modern metal core and anything in between. The stock Celestion V-Type speaker sounds great, and dialing in a fantastic clean and dirty tone is super easy, so you'll spend WAY more time playing, enjoying the amp, and making music than you will twisting knobs to try and dial in a tone.
