Orange Rocker 15 Terror Guitar Amplifier Head (15 Watts)

Multiple wattage options and an attenuator switch let the Orange Rocker 15 Terror guitar amp head adjust to whatever volume you need, without sounding flat.

Between the Orange Rocker 15's full and half power modes - plus the aptly named 'Headroom/Bedroom' attenuator switch - the amp switches between 15, 7, 1 or even half a Watt. When in Bedroom mode, the circuit has been designed to retain the springiness and feel that everyone loves about valve amps, a sensation that often gets lost with some attenuator designs. The result is that this Terror sounds and feels more like a big amp, even in the lowest power modes. This makes for great tones in the practice room or in the studio, with the option to step up a gear to full power 15 Watt mode for the stage.

UNIQUE TWIN CHANNEL DESIGN

If you've ever wondered what your guitars or your pedals actually sounded like, the Rocker Series amps are a joy to play. The 'Natural' channel features just one control for volume and is voiced for absolute transparency. Single coils ring out with true clarity and humbuckers sing with woody overtones. Cleaner settings produce clear, glistening tones, while cranking the volume reveals a bluesy crunch that loves to be kicked harder with boost and overdrive pedals. Quite literally, you get out what you put in. The 'Dirty' channel has a more traditional look with Gain, Master Volume and a three-band EQ. It too can be set on the cleaner side as a second rhythm sound, or dialed for various flavors of British grit for leads. (Optional FS-1 footswitch sold separately). read more

ENGINEERED TO BE PLAYED

For the best possible tone and durability, the Rocker 15 Terror uses the same proprietary transformers found in all of Orange's iconic Terror Series. Like their latest flagship valve amp heads, the Rocker 15 Terror does away with plastic connector blocks and ribbon cables, in favor of hand-soldered flying leads. The chassis-mounted switchgear is secured to the classic Terror series enclosure. As for the amp's effects loop, they've kept the signal path all-valve to preserve the amp's tonal integrity.

Having owned this amp for 3 years now, I can definitively say that I use this amp more than any other amp I own: one simple reason - versatility.I have and love several other high end amps, including a Mk3 Rockerverb 50, but everyone knows that you need to use the right tool for the job at hand and for most of my situations the Rocker Terror 15 fits perfectly. It's also a straight forward, simple to dial in amp that yields excellent tones quickly, I like that. The dirty channel sounds very typically "Orange" which is to say fairly saturated and harmonically rich. It is pretty quiet too at higher gain, especially if you roll the stock EL84's for some Tung-Sol ones. You'll have plenty of gain for classic and hard rock, and with a boost or proper OD pedal it will creep into metal territory. Sound is very similar to the Rockerverb's dirty channel, but with less headroom and runs out of gain earlier (The Rockerverb is a high gain amp btw). The clean channel has a single volume control and goes from clean and chimney (a little dark like a Vox AC) to pushed, crunchy with nice breakup at higher volumes. When you crank the clean you really get the EL84's cooking and they have a nice growl to them. The most useful aspect of the clean channel is that IMO it is the perfect pedal platform. Basically anything I've thrown at it sounds amazing, plus with a tube buffered efx loop the options are many.Where the key to versatility is with this amp is in how the power scaling is implemented. You have read more several options from all 15w which allows you to dial in for a small venue, all the down to the half power + bedroom mode, which lets you achieve all the saturation and power tube tone at a level that is comfortable in a small room. The two other middle options are perfect for studio use and lets you juice every last drop of mojo out of this amp.Lastly it is a cathode biased, class A amplifier, which means that when the time comes to change power tubes, it is user serviceable in that new tubes can simply be popped in with no biasing required.Downsides to the amp are that for the very heavy metal folk this might not have enough gain for the pre-amp distortion you require. Also the amp is assembled in China not the UK so that is kind of meh, however, by doing this the cost of this amp is very reasonable. There are not many amps that allow the type of usability that the Rocker Terror provides!

Sound
The sound quality and tones it is capable of are amazing. It's really one of those amps where you can put everything at noon and rock out. The EQ is real responsive so small tweaks can get you exactly where you want to be. I have also found that the entire range of the gain and volume functions are useable and all have different but good tones. It is mainly geared to cover as much of the "rock" category as possible, it nails it in everything but very heavy metal or drop tuned metal.

Features
Everything is very simple, easy to understand and useful. On the dirt channel it's a pretty standard layout with gain, volume, and a 3 band eq. Clean channel just has volume. While it doesn't have a lot of extra buttons and switches, the eq is sensitive and responsive and the gain and volume pots are useful across their entire range.

Ease of Use
Very very easy to get great sounds. Simply set the dirt channel to everything at noon and proceed to rocking out.

Quality
I have owned my Rocker Terror for 3 years now and have had 0 issues with it. All of the tubes are the originals except for the power tubes which are Tung-Sol brand I swapped in the first week I had the amp.. The metal construction is solid and all of the knobs feel sturdy. It is made in China and not the UK like Orange's flagship amps, but this doesn't seem to have affected quality in any way.

Value
This price for what this amp does makes it very competitive in the lower wattage "lunch box" style amps

Manufacturer Support
I have contacted Orange a few times to have to questions answered, they were prompt and helpful.

The Wow Factor
It's an Orange amp so it's very appealing! They are a legendary company from the UK around since the 60s. Tons of well known musicians have and do use them.
