zZounds Gear Experts Say...
Set neck. Quilted maple top. EMG humbuckers.
Overview
The upscale MH400 is absolutely packed with features. For starters, this is a set neck instrument with a quilted maple top and EMG humbuckers. Killer, right? Well there's more. The MH400 is built with a Floyd Rose licensed tremolo bridge and its Set-Thru neck joint gives you the look and feel of a neck-thru design, with the warmth and true wood tone of a set neck. It's glassy-smooth and extremely comfortable. Other features include that awesome quilted top, a mahogany body, a 3-piece maple neck with a 24-fret rosewood fingerboard (XJ frets), black hardware including Grover tuners, and cool, offset neck inlays. It's a lot of guitar for the money.
Grover Tuners
High-quality Grover tuning machines are well known for their precise gear ratio, tuning stability and durability. They make a great complement to the other upscale features of ESP's 400-level instruments.
Double Action Truss Rods
All ESP/LTD guitars and basses feature a 'double-action' truss rod design. Unlike a normal (single) truss rod, this one is adjustable in two different directions. This means that you'll never run into a situation where the neck has 'run out of adjustment'. Regardless of which ESP model you choose, you'll get years and years of playing enjoyment.
EMG Pickups
There truly is no comparison between active EMG's and conventional pickups. EMG's frequency response is shaped much differently. Conventional pickups typically exhibit a dry "peaky" frequency response, while EMG's have a much broader bandwidth… read more that's better for harmonic pull-offs and chord definition. Individual notes have better presence and are dynamic. Playing styles are more pronounced and different techniques can be easily accommodated. read less

I have yet to get rid of any ESP guitars I've bought. They work and look too damned good to ever part with.
Sound
Some say that EMG 81's don't sound good clean, I'm not one of them. This thing sounds great through my Marshall and my Line 6, clean or ultra gain. With proper use of volume and tone controls, all but the brightest single coil tones are attainable.
Features
The F-R licensed tremolo works smoothly and performs the most radical dive bombs with ease, always returning in tune. All adjustment wrenches are included, as well as an extra spring for the F-R if you want to stiffen it up. The pop in arm is a welcome change from screw-in's I have for others. All hardware is well made and works nicely.
Quality
Fit and finish are top rate. With all my LTD's the quality is so high that I can't imagine paying the extra money for the ESP models. Seems unnecessary to me. The finish on this one is especially lovely. Though somewhat dark and subdued in natural light, camera flashes and stage lighting bring it to glorious life, giving an almost electric hue.
Value
ESP's LTD models are THE best value in the guitar world, bar none! Even the entry level models are outstanding overall guitars.
Manufacturer Support
Took me 7 months to get mine, a ridiculous amount of time for a standard production model. This is due to high demand and an… read more unwillingness to rush production, which I admire. What annoyed me was the runaround I got from company sales staff. Dealers are having the same trouble, especially midwestern dealers. ESP needs to examine it's allocation policies so the east/west coast stores aren't swimming in overstock while everyone else waits forever.
The Wow Factor
Oh yeah, gotta have it! I waited 7 months, so it's hot.
