All About John Lennon

John Winston Ono Lennon was a rock musician, singer, songwriter, writer, actor, artist, and peace activist. He gained worldwide notoriety when he founded The Beatles, an English rock group, with friend, Paul McCartney. His songwriting partnership with McCartney produced some of the most influential songs in rock and roll history.
In 2002, Lennon was ranked eighth in a top 100 poll of the greatest Britons. He was ranked 38th in 2004 by Rolling Stone magazine when they published their 'Fifty Greatest Artists of All Times' list, The Beatles were ranked first.
John Lennon was born in Liverpool, England, in 1940 during a German air raid. His parent's marriage was full of discord and Lennon spent most of his childhood being raised by his childless aunt and uncle, George and Mary Smith. Lennon's mother, Julia, visited regularly, yet he only had sporadic contact with father, Alfred.
Lennon's first marriage was to Cynthia Powell in August, 1962. The marriage produced a son, Julian. The pair divorced in 1968 when it was discovered that one of John's lovers, Yoko Ono, was pregnant with his child. Ono miscarried the male child in November of 1968. Lennon eventually married Ono in March, 1969. Their union produced a son, Sean.
On December 8, 1980, Lennon was shot four times in the back and killed. The gunman was Mark Chapman. It was discovered that Chapman had been stalking Lennon for over a month and that earlier in the evening of the shooting Lennon had given Chapman an autograph. Lennon was cremated and his ashes were kept by Yoko Ono.
