Uncompressed Recording and Playback for Top-Quality Sound
Uncompressed recording/playback is the reason why Korg's digital recording studios are acclaimed for their superior audio quality. On the D1600 Korg's PASE (Pure Audio Sound Engine) provides uncompressed 24-bit, 44.1 kHz high-quality recording that goes well beyond CD-quality, with a wide dynamic range that captures every sonic detail.

16-Track Recorder Section with Virtual Tracks
For each of its 16 tracks the D1600 provides 8 virtual tracks, so you can literally use up to 128 tracks (16 x 8 virtual tracks) for each song! These tracks can be used in any way you choose... to try multiple passes at a guitar solo, to capture a variety of vocal performances, etc. Then you can select or even assemble your perfect "take" from these many tracks. By specifying a virtual track as the recording destination when bounce-recording, you can also combine the data of all tracks into 2 tracks without losing any data. You can even create different mixes and select the best one.

The D1600 includes a variety of functions that make recording easier. For example, Trigger Recording automatically starts the recording process in response to audio input. You can also use a PS 1 pedal to punch-in/out and control start/stop with the tap of a footswitch.

Non-Destructive, Sophisticated Editing
Since this recorder is fully digital, operations such as copying, pasting, or erasing phrases are as easy as specifying the IN, OUT, and TO locations. The read more Undo and Redo functions give you up to 99 levels of undo so it's easy to compare edits and arranging ideas. Plus, you can choose 1, 8, or 99 levels of Undo to make the most efficient use of your hard disk space. You can also set Locate points (4 per song) and Mark points (100 per song, with names), which makes accessing song locations for playback or editing fast and simple. The Time Expansion/Compression function makes it possible for phrases of differing tempo to be matched after they have already been recorded, or to make a phrase fit into a specific time. They've even included Normalize and Fade commands.

Create CDs Without External Equipment
The D1600 features a CD-R/RW bay that makes it possible to write digital audio directly to a CD. It can use either the CDRW-2 option (sold separately) or a general-purpose ATAPI CD-R/RW drive sold for use in desktop computers. The drive can be used to backup/restore data, to create audio CDs, even to playback and record directly from an audio CD.

Even More Hard Disk Space
Installing the provided HDD 40G 3.5 in. 40 Gbyte hard disk is easy with the D1600's cartridge/bay system, and that drive yields up to 62 hours* of recording time (at 16-bit recording/playback, 1 track). The D1600's bay system also accommodates affordable, commercially available IDE hard disks to you can easily exchange drives when switching between different projects.

* The D1600 allows 8-track simultaneous recording/16-track simultaneous playback for 16-bit recording/playback, or 4-track simultaneous recording/8-track simultaneous playback for 24-bit recording/playback.

High-Performance Digital Mixer Section
The D1600 features a 24-channel, 8-bus digital mixer with sixteen 60 mm faders, which let you make smooth, precise level adjustments. The Pairing function allows adjacent channels to be used as a stereo pair, for up to 8 mono plus 4 stereo tracks. A variety of audio sources can be connected directly, ranging from mic level to a +16 dBu level. To match the quality of the full-digital processing, all analog inputs use high-performance balanced preamps. The D1600 provides four XLR jacks with high-quality mic preamps and +48V phantom power, so condenser mics can be connected directly to the D1600. All phone type inputs are balanced TRS jacks and a dedicated guitar input jack is also provided.

Serious EQ
Each analog input and mixer channel has its own high and low shelving EQ, plus adjustable-frequency mid EQ. Because the D1600 has separate EQs for the inputs and the mixer, you can rest assured that the EQ settings for recording remain distinct from those set for playback, avoiding some of the EQ problems that occur on other multi-track recorders and analog mixers.

Mix Automation
Mixer settings such as fader, EQ, pan, and effects can be stored in a scene, and up to 100 scenes can be stored for each song. Scenes can be recalled automatically as the playback time progresses for detailed mixing, or you can manually select them whenever desired as general-purpose setups.

D1600 mixer data, such as fade and pan, can be transmitted and received via MIDI. This makes it possible to perform mixer automation from an external sequencer, keyboard, or your computer.

A Highly Versatile Effect Section
The effects section of the D1600 consists of multiple effects units: up to 8 insert effects that can be used with either mono or stereo inputs and outputs, 2 types of master effects driven by sends from each channel, and a final effect applied to the master out.

Many of these effects feature Korg's exclusive REMS (Resonance structure and Electronic circuit Modeling System) technology. These effects include numerous replications of classic guitar amps, and amazingly accurate simulations of the characteristics of expensive recording microphones.

Each effect program is created using one of 98 different algorithms, and the D1600 delivers a total of 192 preset programs (128 insert, 32 master, 32 final). Effects programs that you create by editing these presets can be stored in the 192 user program areas.

An expression pedal (EXP-2 or XVP-10, sold separately) or external MIDI controller can also be used to control insert effects in realtime, like Wah and Rotary Speaker.

Synchronization and Digital I/O to Support a Variety of Systems
The D1600 lets you input numerical tempo values to create a custom Tempo Map, or use Tap Tempo or MIDI Clock to record the tempo. MTC (MIDI Time Code) can also be received for synchronization, and MMC (MIDI Machine Control) can be transmitted to control external MMC devices, letting you synchronize a pair of D1600s to create a 32-track system. Using a MIDI patch bay, you can connect 3 or more units.

For increased connectivity, the D1600 provides 24-bit optical S/PDIF digital IN/OUT, a SCSI connector, and AUX OUT jacks. The S/PDIF digital input has a built-in sampling rate converter, and can automatically convert and record 48 kHz or 32 kHz sources. Audio from an external digital source such as CD or MD can be recorded digitally, and a song you create can be sent directly to a DAT or MD recorder via digital output for mixdown. The SCSI port can be used to connect various types of fixed and removable media to record, play back, and back up your data.

Features
Auto chromatic tuner - In addition to tuning a guitar or bass, you can even check the tuning of a playback track.

High-quality rhythms - Along with 96 different metronome sounds, the D1600 contains a PCM drum machine with 215 rhythm patterns. You can record along with these rhythms, or even record them onto a track.

Program Playback function - You can play multiple songs in the order that you specify, similar to a CD or MD player.

Auto Save function - The songs and phrases you create are automatically saved to disk when you switch songs or turn off the power.

Easy Use of External Data
WAV files from a SCSI-connected CD (ISO 9660 Level 1 supported) or DOS format (FAT16 supported) external drive can be imported into a D1600 song. Furthermore, audio data in the clipboard can be exported to a DOS-format external drive, making it easy to exchange data with a computer-based audio sequencer, or to distribute music via the Internet.

Audio data that was backed up by the D8 or D16 on an external drive can also be loaded into the D1600.

Smooth Operation with a TouchView Interface
The D1600 features the same TouchView display featured on Korg's most advanced music workstations, so you can perform operations by simply touching the screen. Four cursor keys are also provided, making it easy to select parameters or settings. The large, backlit 240 x 64 pixel screen can display recorded waveforms graphically, and you can scrub through the displayed audio to make the most precise edits possible.

"The Digital Recorder For Sound Rookies"

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
2 years would be my guess. I have had this one for a year, so I am half way there. My replacement will also be a Korg!
Sound
I try to keep the level as close to peak as possible without any clip readings. That ensures higher CD playback volume and no clips.
Features
I have the D1600v40 which you have to hand feed each song one at a time while burning a CD. I understand the Mark II has the "disk at once feature", but that doesn't help me. hehehe
Quality
The only problem I have had is a few disk errors, which optimizing the entire song from start to finsish will usually fix. I can see a reformat coming not too far down the road...
Value
Great Value
Manufacturer Support
I have had no problems to contact Korg about.
The Wow Factor
Looks good to me.
