Overview
The Hughes and Kettner Red Box Classic is a world-famous guitar direct box -- you'll never have to mic a guitar speaker again!
The Red Box converts your amp's line out or speaker out signal into a balanced, frequency-compensated signal that you can feed directly into a mixer. The Red Box Classic features two voicing options: a 4x12-inch cabinet and a 2x12-inch combo.
The Red Box Classic may be powered by phantom power, or a standard power adapter like the Boss PSA120, a 9 volt battery, or anything from 9-15V AC or 9-24V DC.

"When you can't afford to mic a cab the Redbox is there to emulate it for you."
There's really nothing else on the market quite like it. I personally love the fact that H&K made sure that this unit can use all kinds of power supplies (from 6 to 12 volt!), phantom power or battery. Great design and great sounds.
Sound
This product is a cab (speaker) emulator and it does the job well. It basically has two distinct sounds - one is 4x12 which to me feels like a cranked Marshall 4x12 stack and the other mode is a 2x12 which seems like a nice combo, say Fender or Vox. After owning the H&K Tubeman with Redbox simulation I decided to get teh Redbox alone to pair with some other effects for more tonal options and this thing rocks.
Features
Some of the features are not well explained in the manual and I had to contact H&K about them. For one - there is a ground lift switch on the back of the unit that is not labelled. Also the way to hook up a tube amp to the simulator is not very well explained either. Again - easily clarified by H&K, apparently you can hook the speaker out of a tube amp to the H&K Redbox and then the Redbox "To Speaker Cabinet" goes into the tube amp. It could also be done with an extension speaker as well. These things are missed in the manual or just didn't seem clear to me. This unit is also lacking a DI output - it would've been very beneficial if you can get a DI signal out of it and your colored signal separated, in the present design you only get the colored sound out which… read more limits the Redbox's useability.
Ease of Use
This unit is pretty much plug and play. Some care has to be excercised not to blow up the tube amp (speaker always needs to be connected!) otherwise it is pretty simple to setup and use, and in cases where your situation doesn't allow loud sounds the Redbox is a must.
Value
A little pricey for a little box, but there is nothing else quite like it on the market.

Metal box with red pain and white letters - don't know how sexy it is per se, but it definitely looks good and it doesn't make me feel embarassed to use it when running a session.
