Recreate the classic synth sounds of the '80s with this software model of the legendary Roland Jupiter-8V, including 400+ high-quality presets.

The Jupiter-8V is the newest addition to the family Arturia's analog synthesizer recreations. Offering the unique sound palette of the Roland Jupiter 8, this virtual version is a sound designer's dream.

Based on the latest version of TAE, the Jupiter-8V also offers a host of modern features: an advanced step sequencer, a new line of dynamic effects, a module combining LFO's (called Galaxy), and lots more.

A Little Bit Of History

Back to the early 80s, the Prophet 5 and Oberheim OB series dominated the polyphonic synthesizer market. Having that in mind the Jupiter-8's success, initiated in 1981, took every one by storm.

But what made the Jupiter-8 so successful? Well, in terms of sonic possibilities, it complemented its competition by bringing something different. The Jupiter-8 was capable of creating very versatile sounds. You could easily make "Phat" or "Crystal" sounds with it. In fact, the Jupiter-8 sounded the way it looked, "sleek and polished".

The electro-pop community became quickly convinced by the qualities of the Jupiter-8.'Relax', by Frankie Goes to Hollywood was produced incorporating a Jupiter 8, and players such as Vince Clarke, John Foxx, and Martyn Ware were also using it. The path to classic status of the Jupiter started there. Other artists that have used The Jupiter-8 include Tangerine Dream, Underworld, Jean Michel Jarre, Depeche Mode, Prince, Gary Wright, Adrian Lee, Heaven 17, Kitaro, Elvis Costello, Tears for Fears, Huey Lewis and the News, read more Journey, Devo,Freddy Fresh, Simple Minds, Jan Hammer and BT.

An Accurate Recreation

The legacy of the Roland Jupiter synthesizers is due to their unique voice architecture and design, creating sounds that were so unreal that they have to be heard. For many musicians no other synths in the world can create analog sounds as cool and as authentic as these.

- The Jupiter-8 offers a very interesting combination of a high-pass non resonant filter and a low-pass resonant filter.
- The arpegiator and the keyboard split make it a remarkable performance keyboard.
- Fast envelopes and precise oscillators confer to the Jupiter-8's sounds its famous versatility.

Innovative Additions

With the Jupiter-8V Arturia brings this magic back while adding a new generation of features, opening a unique and contemporary sound palette:

The Galaxy allows the user to choose from different LFO types and intertwine them together into a single unique modulation source, giving a new evolving element to the sound of the Jupiter 8.

The Jupiter's step sequencer is also an assignable modulation source, which allows for easily generated patterns to be used to control the many interesting parameters of the sound.

In addition to the step sequencer and Galaxy modulation sources, each voice now has its own suite of creative effects, which can be inserted into the main synthesizer signal path in each voice. Key parameters from each effect can be modulated by chosen sources, adding a new contemporary dimension to the traditional subtractive synthesis sound of the original Jupiter 8.

New in Version 2:

- A revolutionary preset navigation system called SoundMap
- Ability to use NRPN midi messages for automation
- Presets now respond to modulation wheel
- Fresh batch of presets made by a selection of top sound designers
- MIDI RPN "pitch bend range" message is now recognized

It's fine ... not looking for alternates or others. It will take a while to know/find what this one can do. Right now it would be easier to have all the knobs since you don't have a "keyboard" on-screen (again, mouse is 1 finger, not 5) that can play all your fingers ...

Sound
Nice ... not sure there is another word ... just nice. It's really a treat when one has such a large collection of the likes of Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis and so many other artists ... and all of a sudden one is hearing these sounds when you hit the keys ... it's almost scary, breath taking ... imagining that you can create something that can be as awe inspiring as what you heard so long ago ... yet sound as pretty.

Features
Works fine and I run it from an Oxygen 61 ... the manual setup for it was a head ache to start ... I suppose that Arturia (and others) figure that Midi is an after thought ... like a baby's breath ... but the sounds sure are.

Ease of Use
Learning curve was in the setup so it could be played since the mouse is "one finger" ... and not a hand that you can preset 5 fingers for (try that on a mouse ... how about inventing it so you could play a third automatically !!!!! ... no one plays a keyboard with 1 pointer and might be more fun to devise a way that we can "play this" on the computer screen ... (without a keyboard/midi -- something that needs more discussion read more int he manual!)

Quality
Someone said that the original is always best ... and I could not help thinking of all the different versions of Beethoven and Mozart and Stravinsky ... and wondering which one was more original than the other. In essence, "analog" was the infancy of the digital ear and a major part of its growth. It sounds and plays as nice as the original ... I'm sure that Mozart might be flatters and actually enjoy not having to go through Salieri ever again! Not to mention so many other composers!

Value
It's good

Manufacturer Support
Not good. Could not get adequate access and information to help setup a Oxygen 61 Midi controller, and setting up the faders and knobs on that keyboard are still not done ... and the manual ignores this section completely.

The Wow Factor
Sexy. Blonde ... not quite blue eyes. Bikini needs a make over. The posture is a bit old fashioned. The song book she is holding is definitly outta-season. The haircut is pre-historic. ... still ... she is pretty and few of us would not like to have a date with the prom queen!
