Record awesome, full-band tracks. . . with or without the band! With twelve analog inputs, a flexible DSP mixing section, and the unique "Session Drums" virtual drummer, the Korg D3200 is a powerful multitrack recording tool, and the onboard CD-RW burner makes it easy to get your music out there. Whether you're your band's resident recording buff, or the bedroom symphonist who knows exactly what they want to hear from each instrument, the D3200 is your perfect studio-in-a-box.

Recording The Band
With twelve simultaneous analog inputs, you'll have plenty of room for recording a fully mic'ed drum set, plus additional tracks for the rest of the band. For the modern rock band, the benefits of recording as many tracks live as possible can't be understated. The subtle interplay between a rhythm section playing together and along with a melody is what makes music exciting, and the D3200 lets you capture that organic feeling in your recordings. Eight XLR inputs are attached to great-sounding preamps, and provide true 48v phantom power--individually switchable per channel--so you can plug studio-quality mics directly into the recorder. The remaining four line inputs can be fed by additional outboard processors, or line-level instruments like synths, samplers, and drum machines. There's even a dedicated Hi-Z input for bass or guitar, so if you're tight on mics, the D3200 saves you one. Eight virtual tracks per channel let you record multiple takes without sacrificing what might have read more been "the one." And don't worry about running out of room: the D3200 is packed with a massive 80GB hard disk for hours of uncompressed, better-than CD-quality audio (up to 24-bit 48kHz).

Building The Bedroom Masterpiece
You don't need a band to make full use of the Korg D3200. The solo composer will fall in love with the D3200's high mix-channel count, powerful track editing tools, and ingenious Session Drummer feature. Footswitches can be used to control transport functions, and even offer realtime control over parameters like volume and EQ filter sweeps, making solo tracking a hands-free procedure. Having Session Drummer in your multitrack recorder is like having a first-call session cat at your beck and call for every recording project. Using Korg's 4 x 4 intelligent mixing knob matrix, you can easily adjust the feel of preset patterns, as well as the volume of individual kit elements. Because Session Drummer supplies a huge number of preset rhythm patterns, you can easily and quickly add drums to any song without having to meticulously create one from nothing. Layering and arranging other instruments in your mix is made easy, too, thanks to the D3200's clear and comprehensive tilt-up LCD screen. The D3200 provides you with a massive track editing and mixing toolbox, and functions like normalization, splicing, EQ, and others are displayed graphically. With the guesswork eliminated, you'll be able to use your recorder like another musical instrument, intuitively sculpting mixes and really freeing up your creativity.

Advanced Features: Digital Inputs, MIDI Syncing And More
With such an inviting interface, you'll be jumping into recording quickly with the Korg D3200. But because it offers rich and deep functionality beyond basic tracking and mixing, you'll be able to grow into it for years to come. Spend some time with the D3200, and you're sure to have a number of wildly different projects on one hard drive. Automation snapshots let you pick up where you left off on different songs by saving fader automation and EQ and effects presets, just like a world-class digital studio console. MIDI syncing also allows the D3200 to send and receive MMC and MTC information, and can act as a master MIDI clock for syncing with external sequencers and effects--electronic musicians, take note. If you want to add the built-in effects to your tracks, you'll be happy to know that you can use up to eleven effects simultaneously. Should you wish to transfer your projects to a computer for even deeper editing, the integrated USB 2.0 port allows for fast and simple file transfers.

Professional Quality Sound At An Affordable Price
The new D3200 provides 16 and 24-bit uncompressed 44.1 or 48 kHz recording and playback. Up to 32 tracks of simultaneous playback and up to 16 tracks of simultaneous recording*1 are possible. By taking advantage of the eight virtual tracks provided for each track, you can record a total of up to 272*2 tracks. In the 24-bit mode, the digital data passing through the fader and EQ is recorded onto the internal hard drive as 32-bit data, ensuring even higher recording and playback quality. A 80 GB hard disk is standard, allowing approximately 119 hours*3 of recording. The internal processor uses 64-bit precision (maximum 69 bit), delivering professional-level audio quality.

Interactive Session Drums
Create dynamic drum tracks quickly and easily with the D3200's totally new, built-in Session Drums™ feature. Using KORG’s exclusive Knob Matrix, simply twist the Group and Session knobs to choose the overall musical style, and use the Variation knob to select a pattern appropriate for your song. Breathe new life into your drum tracks by tweaking the Shuffle and Humanize knobs to produce subtle variations in the timing, accent, feel and volume of each drum hit. You can even customize the rhythm sounds themselves. With Session Drums™, you can create and record your original drum tracks – without time-consuming programming and step-recording.

Sophisticated and Versatile Track Editing Tools
With a comprehensive suite of editing functions, you can perform advanced and non-destructive track editing without impairing the high-quality sound. In addition to auto and manual punch-in/out, the D3200 provides editing functions such as copy, erase, reverse, normalize and fade. Sophisticated editing functions such as time expansion/compression are also supported. In addition, a “learning” noise reduction feature removes unwanted ambient noise without impairing the original sound, further improving the quality of your sound. Undo/Redo allows up to sixteen prior recording and editing operations to be undone, letting you continue editing until you are satisfied. Four locate points allow pinpoint editing of your song.

Versatile Input Section
The D3200 can record up to twelve tracks at once, and there are plenty of inputs to go around. An even dozen of 1/4” balanced inputs are teamed with eight XLR inputs jacks featuring high-quality mic preamps and +48V phantom power. Each of the eight phantom power supplies can be switched on/off independently, so you can mix and match your favorite condenser and dynamic mics to get the job done. At home in the digital world, the D3200 also features optical S/P DIF ins and outs. For those private moments of inspiration, there's also a dedicated guitar jack so you can start recording immediately with a minimum of preparation. The large number of simultaneous recording tracks and the D3200’s wealth of inputs make it easy to record entire bands or even individually-mic’d drum sets.

Powerful Automated Mixer Section
The D3200's mixer provides a total of 44 input channels (32 recorder channels and 12 sub-mixer channels). Recorder channels 1-24 are equipped with a versatile four-band EQ. Channels 25-32 provide a two-band shelving EQ, as does each of the 12 sub-mixer channels. For complete control of your sound, the master track features a separate four-band fully parametric EQ. Recording input channels and track playback channels feature separate EQs, so there’s no danger of applying duplicate EQ settings, as on some lesser recorders. This professional recording mixer offers a total of twelve buses (including two effect sends), giving you the flexibility to meet the needs of a wide range of situations. Fader, EQ, pan, and effect settings can be stored as a “scene,” and up to 100 scenes can be saved and automatically recalled for each song, providing sophisticated automation. In addition, Dynamic Automation records and plays back individual fader and pan movements in real time, providing the freedom you need for creative mixing. Mixer parameters can also be controlled via MIDI.

An Enhanced Graphic Display
As the new standard for affordable digital recording studios, the D3200 brings ease of operation to a new level, with a full complement of fresh innovations such as the unique Knob Matrix and Korg’s exclusive ClickPoint. The Knob Matrix provides 16 real-time control knobs laid out in a 4 x 4 arrangement that can be used simultaneously to edit a variety of parameters such as the Session Drums™ or the effect processors. It’s an extremely “analog-feeling” interface that’s far more natural than accessing a parameter and editing its numerical value. The 3-axis ClickPoint provides fingertip control that is much more immediate and satisfying than using a mouse or a track ball. ClickPoint can also be used as a jog/shuttle function when you're scrubbing through audio. The cursor keys and other panel keys efficiently access numerous shortcuts for the various modes. The 320 x 240 pixel four-level grayscale display uses immediately understandable icons and provides visual feedback of the many Knob Matrix functions.

High-quality effects
The D3200’s multiple effect processors use 56-bit internal processing to provide the highest audio quality, and include many of the acclaimed “REMS” technology modeling effects. A total of eleven effects can be used at once; eight insert effects, two master effects applied to the master sends of each channel, and two final effects applied to the master L/R. You can instantly select from 128 effect programs created from 52 different effect algorithms. You can edit, create and store your own effect programs in the 128 user locations shared by the entire D3200, or in the 32 user effect program locations for each song.

Album CD Project and internal CD-RW
The D3200's built-in CD-RW drive can be used to backup/restore songs and user data, to import WAV files, or to create finished audio CDs. When creating an audio CD, you can use the Album CD Project function to easily create a production-ready CD that specifies the song order and even the length of the gaps between songs. The internal hard drive can be partitioned so you can work on multiple album CD projects at once. The CD-RW can also be internally routed to the mixer inputs and used as a CD player.

Computer friendly
The D3200 automatically allocates part of its internal hard disk as a PC (USB) drive.*4 This area can be used to import/export WAV data between the D3200 and a computer DAW program via USB, and can also be used to load system data. D3200 user data transferred to your PC can be easily e-mailed or exchanged over the Internet. High-speed USB 2.0 is supported, so even large amounts of data can be transferred smoothly. In addition, back-up data created*5 by other Korg D-series models can also be loaded.*6 (D12, D16, D1200, D1600, D1200mkII, D1600mkII, D16XD, D32XD)

I will use the Korg D3200 till some one makes a 48 XLR input, 48 x 100mm fader, unlimited multi track metal case unit for $ 1000.00. I am satisfied with it for field "live recording" of club bands needing only a 12 mikes, cables, and a few mike stands, and one AC power outlet to produce agood quality live recording.

Sound
At the price I got my Korg D3200 new, I have to give it a (9) for the reason that you can pay a lot more and get better. I have a Tascam, 2488 digital recorder, but found myself not having enough inputs for live band recordings. The Korg can connect 8 XLR phantom powered mikes, and 4 1/4'' jacks (line in or guitar or keys) and give you 12 tracks of live recording on the spot. If you use condencer mikes with a 20 to 20k frequency response, you will get very good results. You can use the 12 1/4'' jacks for all recording if you don't have XLR mikes and equipment. I bought this unit for it's compact size, transportability, and ability to record live gigs, getting the whole band on 12 tracks, then adding more tracks at the home studio to polish the recordings for Demo CD's.

Features
The learning curve on all digital recorders is steep, but I found myself tracking in about 15 min, and then just expolring and trying to add effects, and navigate by the screen. After seeing and finding the functions in the LCD screen and using it for about a week, I began to get very high recordings at 24bit/48khz, read more 12 live tracks, plus filling up the additional multitracked tracks.

Ease of Use
After playing around and experimenting with the unit and learning where the controls are, it becomes very easy to record with. There is a lot of power in this little box. The manual is helpful an best used when you need a specific task, and then following the steps, one by one. The machine saves your mix or mixes so you can recall them, compare or remix, unlike an analog mixer, you'll never get the mix again after you zeroed out your analog mixer. This saves a lot of time time when your client wants a remix. Ease of use is a 7 because Digital Recorders have a lot of functions and it is a very technical piece of equipment. But once you learn how to use one digital recorder, all your learning applies to the other machines.

Quality
The Korg D3200 is about 22'x 17" X 6" and is a metal box with wood trim ends it is a nice looking unit with solid feel, and input jacks are real XLR's and metal 1/4" inputs, not plastic. Buttons and controls feel quality. The LCD is kinda dull, and that is the only thing I wish was better, or in color. For the price I paid new in a box, (I cant say), I stole it. What a deal!

Value
This unit replaced 2 Tascam DA 38's MDM's, two 8 channel compressors, four 8 channel snakes, a large, bulky 24 channel analog mixer, and a rack full of multi-effects and processors, cable speghetti, (about $8,000); a truck bed full of gear, in one compact box! And it has more tracks than my old rig, 32 vs 16, plus 8 virtual tracks per channel, and 'way better sound quality at 24 bit/48: much better quality, and a way better way to mix and save the recordings. a It burns CD's and can transfer your files by USB for computer back up. This is an incredible value and space saver as well. Wanna buy a truck bed full of older studio gear for more money? Your ability to play your instruments, input clean sound signals, and mix well, will produce excellent demos, or produce a good final CD product, no problem.

Manufacturer Support
Never dealt with Korg for repairs so I don't know.

The Wow Factor
The metal box and solid feel make this unit rugged and less likely to break in an accident, and that appeals to me alot working around sometimes less than cautious musicians and band fans who trip over stuff to look at it. Everybody likes "LIVE RECORDING" and wants to get in on the act. Features and metal construction and price make it an "I want it" ...so I got it.
